Aerial Top Dressing c.f. Crop Dusting

Regarding the entires about aerial topdressing and crop dusting, I think there has been some confusion about the meaning of these terms, which I have helped perpetuate by putting a rather badly worded link in the crop dusting stub.

My understanding is crop dusting pre-dates top dresing, but the two are not the same thing. This is certainly true in NZ usage.

Topdressing concerns the delivery of fertilisers, (usually superphosphate and lime), where as crop dusting initially referred to the use of insecticides and fungicides. I thought it had since come to include the spread of fertilisers, and added the link thinking top dressing was a subset of crop dusting - though certainly I should have made this clearer. In fact, having read your comments I did some rapid research into crop dusting, and note many still seem use the phrase only in relation to spreading posions. I am afraid although I made a number of searches relating to top dressing I did not include crop dusting in my initial searches, otherwise I would certainly have modified the way I attached the link to your page.

Although the material, including the two texts, encylopedia entry cited state topdressing - meaning the spreading of fertiliser - was a New Zealand invention (and indeed the Museum of New Zealand displays a Tiger Moth to commemorate the fact), it is quite possible the parochial pride allowed previous researchers to overlook prior foreign invention, which for some reason did not widely catch on.

I would welcome any research about this that comes to light.

I had meant to add an invitation to others to add details of other nations to the top dressing page, and had been intending to add notes about the development in Australia and the UK when further information arrived. I note that as Eric said, the page is still heavily dependant on New Zealand history and your renaming is probably appropriate in the interim. Winstonwolfe

Neanderthal

In your summary to changes in the Gibraltar article, you say "History - just as chimps today, neanderthals weren't humans - they're hominids)". If we take Homo as human, neanderthals are human. They are also hominids, so the current version is also right.

Note also that there those that include chimpanzees as Homo paniscus and Homo troglodytes. --Error 01:06, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Human says that biologically "human" refers to Homo sapiens, so I'd prefer to stick to hominids to be entirely without chance of confusion. I don't think you'd find many, scientist or non-scientist, who'd include chimpanzees as "humans". — ceejayoz ^★ 01:13, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Unexplained deletion

You should refer to the ongoing discussion in the Gibraltar article page before deleting somebody else's work. We are trying to reach consensus here. So, please, read before delete!

Nowhere in that article is the phrase "Exodus of Gibraltar" mentioned (it says "forced to exodus", but the debate here is over it being known in historical terms as the "Exodus of Gibraltar"), and even if it did, a) the extrememly low number of Google results and b) the fact that this particular source is an opinion piece makes it irrelevant. Question

Ceejayoz, I noticed your name on the WP:AFD page and i recognized your name obviously because of our discussion about the featured diagram and corn issues :-). I was thinking of re-listing the David Mertz article for deletion but wanted to get someone elses opinion first and i figured "hey, i'll ask ceejayoz, his name looks familiar." Please don't leave rude comments suggesting that 4 different people from 4 different states couldn't be using the same computer since we all go to the same university. I really am glad you thought you could question our intelligence when you neglected to even consider how on earth 4 people could have the same IP. You see in College people are likely to not be from the same place. Sometimes at college kids come from other states just to go to a certain school. Now when 4 kids happen to come to the same school there is a chance they will not be all from the same state. Then there is a good chance they will be using the same computer, much like many fraternities. Please don't be obnoxious and try to sound like you are so quick and smart to think you got us. Thank You with repeated harassment I will notify wikipedia about the abuse you are using.

Thanks for leaving a comment about the photo. It was taken from the balcony of our neighbours house. Our village is on the top of a hill and their house faces east towards Hemel. We were all woken up by the explosion. Their children came round to tell us what it was and I just grabbed my camera and went to see. A case of being in the right place and the right time.

It's now two days since the explosion and we can still see the smoke during the day and the flickering orange of the flame during the night. The wind has been blowing the smoke away from us and so there's no real pollution here, just a faint oily smell in the air sometimes.

Australian flag in your signature

You use the Australian flag in your signature, right? If you do, you're going to start having to use Image:Flag of Australia.svg, as the one you use right now (which is a png) is considered redundant and is facing deletion. Thanks for the reverts. The person behind that IP address is User:Gibraltarian, permanently banned by the Arbitration Committee. If the vandalism does not stop, I will ask for semi-protection.
