Districts[edit]

Hi, I don't have an opinion on whether to use emdashes. When I first stated creating district articles, I used them, but someone changed them. Then all of a sudden, they changed back. So, it's probably something you should bring up with the other Canadians at the Canadian wikiboard. -- Earl Andrew - talk 02:36, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

electoral districts[edit]

Hi, Fawcett5. Your criticism is fair and well taken. Truth be told, I wasn't giving the articles sufficient attention when I made the changes. I will try to be more diligent in the future. All the best! -- PullUpYourSocks 03:09, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Louis Riel[edit]

Thanks for the heads up about the Louis Riel article making it on the home page. That is awesome. I just got back from Winnipeg last night. Christie and I happened to make it to St. Boniface. I have pictures of Riel's grave and the tortured statue. Hopefully they will turn out. I will have to get them on Wikipedia before the article is featured. -- JamesTeterenko 15:27, 3 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ditto on the thanks for the heads up. I can't wait to see it as the featured article! I'll be sure to keep a lookout for vandalism during that time and after. CWood 01:33, 4 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nova Scotians by Occupation[edit]

yeah, read your message Fawcett5 and will do as you suggest. Mayumashu 11:55, 5 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Mayumashu, I hope its not too much trouble, but over sub-catting just makes the categories less and less useful as things begin to approach the atomic level... Fawcett5 11:58, 5 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian Confederation clutter[edit]

The "clutter" you removed was supposed to be the following: a green tick next to each "yes", a red x-mark next to each "no". It seems that either the fonts or Unicode or something didn't display properly in your system, but either way you probably did right to revert it, since a problem faced by you will also be faced by a number of others. Perhaps I should think about replacing the unicode-dependent ticks and marks in my Template:Yes and Template:No with tiny images instead. And then it'll still be up to the people contributing in each article to decide whether they want them or not. Aris Katsaris 21:27, May 5, 2005 (UTC)

I have now changed the templates to carry tiny images instead of Unicode characters. Please check if you think that Canadian Confederation table now looks better or not. Aris Katsaris 23:47, May 5, 2005 (UTC)

I'm a bit puzzled by your edits to James Knight — why link to the ambiguous Fort Albany and Churchill River instead of the precise Fort Albany, Ontario and Churchill River (Hudson Bay)? Gdr 19:49, 2005 May 6 (UTC) :Don't like em? Fix em. Fawcett5 19:53, 6 May 2005 (UTC) Yes, looks like a server bug in which edits get out of order. Gdr 20:58, 2005 May 6 (UTC)[reply]

North West Territories Act of 1880[edit]

Hi there! I had some slow moments at work today and just discovered we actually had the statutes of Canada for 1880 in our office (It's amazing what you find when you're cleaning out cupboards!). Anyways, I took a look at that Act, which was one to consolidate the old acts of 1870, 1873 and 1875 into one new Act. It does not mention the transfer of the northern islands to Canada although does mention Keewatin, which was made a territory in 1880 when the islands got transferred, I think? Anyways, this actual transfer most certainly would have been done under a British Act of Parliament, but I just can't find anything online at this time. So I think my point is - the transfer of the northern islands don't fall under the 1880 NWT Act as you initially suspected. I don't have a clue if this makes sense, it is Friday afternoon and all.  :) CWood 22:45, 6 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm curious why you created this page, given you also contributed to Vaughan-King-Aurora; why not move the latter instead? I've requested that the old page move to the new location, so we don't end up with a fork on the subject. (Note that the original article's title was created incorrectly by me.) Mindmatrix 22:52, 6 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, my knowledge of CN's history doesn't quite go back that far, but based on a quick web search it appears that the Toronto, Simcoe & Lake Huron Union Railroad Company changed its name to the Ontario, Simcoe & Lake Huron Union Railroad Company (for example, see [1] [2]). It's still not clear to me whether it's "railway" or "railroad" or "rail-road". I have to go somewhere now but maybe I'll do a bit of digging tomorrow regarding the spelling. JYolkowski // talk 20:35, 7 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks JY, any help is much appreciated. Fawcett5 02:23, 8 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The names were given as "Toronto, Simcoe and Lake Huron Union Railroad" and "Ontario, Simcoe and Huron Union Railroad" in Stevens' Canadian National Railways so I changed the article to match. JYolkowski // talk 22:56, 9 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of the Plains of Abraham[edit]

The Battle of the Plains of Abraham is very much a part of U.S. history, as well as Canadian and British history: American colonial troops were involved. If it's all the same to you, I'll restore the Category:U.S. history images to Image:Death-wolfe.jpg. You, of course, are free to add a Canadian tag to it as well. If I'm missing something here, let me know. -- Mwanner 02:19, May 8, 2005 (UTC)

M, that's fine by me. Fawcett5 02:21, 8 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Socialist Party (England and Wales)/meta/shortname speedy deletion[edit]

Since I created this page, I can't remove the tag. However, it's a utility page used with the Template:Election box candidate with party link, and having it marked for delete is really messing with the expansion I'm trying to do at Cardiff South and Penarth (UK Parliament constituency). Would you mind removing it, please? :) Vashti 18:34, 8 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I will remove it, but I don't believe that this is a suitable mechanism for creating utility pages. If it is for a private template, perhaps something in your user heirarchy? Fawcett5 18:37, 8 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
This template is used by every UK constituency page that I'm aware of - compare Cardiff Central (UK Parliament constituency), Bethnal Green and Bow (UK Parliament constituency), or just go to Results of the United Kingdom general election, 2005 and click around there for a little while to see how extensively it's used. It may be wrong, I wouldn't know; I didn't create the template, I'm just using it. Thank you for your quick response, however... now to move on to the color metadata, which has also been marked for deletion. :) Vashti 18:48, 8 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vashti, sorry, I didn't mark the colour metadata for deletion, so I'm not comfortable removing the tag. You really need to figure out where the appropriate place to create these utility pages is. Fawcett5 18:51, 8 May 2005 (UTC) I think you need to move them out of the main namespace and into template space. Fawcett5 19:01, 8 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, you're probably right, but the metadata for the Labour Party (UK) and the Conservative Party (UK), just to take the two largest parties, are also in Main: and this is where the documentation for the template says to create them. I'll add something to the template's talk page about it. Vashti 19:05, 8 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Athlete cats[edit]

hello. i read your message concerning adding, i believe it was, canadian track athletes cat to canadian sportspeople cat and not occupation by nationality. i can t seem to find where that was the case, although there were, i think, duplicate cats for canadian track athletes (likely owing some ambiguity with the word 'athletes' and how its used in american and british english). at any rate, i believe i ve got cat the sportspeople cats a bit better now. thanks again for the earlier message on not going to fine with provincial cats. regards, Mayumashu 05:11, 9 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, the Smith article is today's featured article. I just thought a link to a semi-famous person might be appropriate on the airplane's page. func(talk) 20:38, 10 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Honourable/Right Honourable[edit]

I don't know why it is, but look at any list of PMs...like this one for example. Mackenzie, Abbott, and Bowell are only "Honourable." Adam Bishop 15:07, 11 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

DoCB[edit]

Hi Fawcett5,

I'm glad to be able to assist. I enjoy this kind of thing. However I don't think I will do many new bios only verification. My own personal project is to try to add all the people who were awarded the Companion of the Order of Canada. Your project is an easier way to get my fix of Wiki and not have to research as much. I guess I should sign up for your project.

--YUL89YYZ 19:47, May 12, 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, the "external links" is a pet pieve of mine since there is only usually one. Can you explain the difference between subst:lived and lived. How does MediaWiki deal with these two? --YUL89YYZ 20:34, May 12, 2005 (UTC)

Hi Fawcett5,

Thank you for the award you put on my user page, it is much appreciated. Your DoCB project has got me too addicted to Wikipedia when I should be doing paying work. I was just looking for some Yukon historical figures when I stumbled upon it. And then, having been subjected to seven elementary school years of the Quebec version of Canadian History in the '60s in Montreal, I kept running into names I knew had to have articles. One question though, just out of curiosity. Why do you want regular dashes replaced with "ndash" in the dates? Or maybe you can point me to some reference in Wikipedia? Luigizanasi 18:32, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Father of Confederation[edit]

Ye gods! I'm terribly sorry. This is what I get for not double-checking myself. I meant to pipe the links to Canadian Confederation. (I'm a little tired, you'll have to excuse me.) Thanks for catching me on that. I'll go fix it. [[User:Premeditated Chaos|User:Premeditated Chaos/Sig]] 03:54, 13 May 2005 (UTC)

OK[edit]

OK, I blocked them for a week. By the way, my name is not "Cryptodirk". CryptoDerk 17:36, May 17, 2005 (UTC)

Professors of Dalhousie University[edit]

You seem to have erroneously removed several of the most notable members of the Dalhousie faculty from the Notable faculty list. Is there a good reason for assuming that these faculty members are not notable? For the majority, I can argue otherwise. Please leave me a note on my talk page if you want to continue, as for now I am reverting your change. Danielfong 20:47, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PD images?[edit]

Hi Zanium, I noticed that for some images you have cropped, (such as Pm sq turner.jpg), you have slapped a PD tag on them and say that you "release it into the public domain". But you just cannot DO that. You did not create the content, you just created a derivative work over which you probably have no rights. You should probably go back to each of these and put a suitable tag on them, presumably the same as for the originals, and provide also a link to the original images.... Cheers, Fawcett5 20:28, 14 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The attribution has been corrected. -- user:zanimum

Speedy deletions[edit]

  1. I'm happy to receive messages, but there's no need to write them in triplicate.
  2. I take a list with three names, none linked, and no information, to be a reasonable speedy-deletion candidate, as the person who marked it as speedy also thought (total content: "Ebola, Marburg, AIDS"). If you want to create a genuine article on the subject, feel free to create one. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 14:44, 20 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I realised that the triplicate thing was a glitch — my remark was supposed to be light-hearted; sorry if it didn't come over that way.

With regard to speedies, I suppose that I have a number of things in mind: first, does it have the makings of an article? secondly, would doing all the checking (is there a suitable article under a different name? etc.) take more time than the creator put into creating it? I'm not saying that this is the conscious process that I actually go through, but it's more than an after-the-fact excuse.

In this case, though I checked Marburg and AIDS, I couldn't find reference to the former as a disease, and the latter isn't strictly speaking a blood-borne disease either. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 15:46, 20 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ridings[edit]

I feel it is best to combine as many ridings as possible into each article as merging ridings makes it far easier for the reader. For instance the riding covering downtown Toronto, now named Toronto Centre, has had several names and in theory could be split into a half dozen different articles. It makes it far easier to follow the history when it is all placed in one article, however. Of the several hundred riding articles that existed before you began adding your stubs the majority contained the history of more than one riding and it would take a vast amount of work to untangle them. Moreover the List of Canadian federal electoral districts series already has the official list so there is no need for the categories to copy this. - SimonP 22:24, May 22, 2005 (UTC)

Wayner reference on RDC page[edit]

Doh! Must have just added it as the last line without looking at the section headings. Good catch. I've been reading through that book and using it to verify and add information on various pages. slambo 23:41, May 22, 2005 (UTC)

RFC[edit]

Hello. Persuant to your actions on his user page, I have created a second RFC against Lulu. It is at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters 2. Perhaps you could check it out. Cheers, Smoddy (Rabbit and pork) 11:21, 24 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Alexander MacGregor[edit]

There have been complaints about this article from Alexander MacGregor's attorneys. If it is recreated all information in it should be well referenced and carefully attributed. Fred Bauder 10:11, May 25, 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia: Todd Brendan Fahey[edit]

Fawcett5,

This page was "tagged" for potential "copyright violation" yesterday by "Fawcett"; however, the page of origination (the original text) IS Wikipedia's: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Brendan_Fahey

Many other sites Web-wide have taken Wikipedia's draft and transferred the text to their own. A stamp-of-approval, it seems, for Wikipedia.

This is to let you know that the entry for "Todd Brendan Fahey" was first posted (and then "Wikified" at Wikipedia.org. There has been no copyright infringement.

(The page seems to be under periodic vandal attack, as the "History" page reveals. But that's another story.)

PLEASE RETAIN THE CURRENT DRAFT of the Wikipedia entry for "Todd Brendan Fahey." It is accurate and has already been "approved" and "Wikified" by your Admins.

Thx.

OK, I see now that Biography.ms is an unauthorized mirror of wikipedia that fails to provide proper GFDL notification. But what could you possibly mean by "approved" by "my" "Admins". What poppycock. I will look into this further. Fawcett5 02:21, 26 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Pearson Death[edit]

JimWae reverted your edit of Pearson's date of death, saying that the DCB must be "in a different time zone" because it alone had the date as 28 December. I reverted it to the way you had it, but once my edit was posted, JimWae's disappeared from the history list. Now it looks like I'm reacting to your edit, when actually, I am agreeing with (and reinforcing) it. HistoryBA 14:21, 29 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm back.... occasionally[edit]

I had to laugh when I saw you welcome me back in the comment on Nestor Dmytriw. Yeah, I have been busy lately. And it will probably continue for a while. You see, Christie and I just got engaged last weekend and we are trying to pull off a decent size (I say 300 people is average, Christie thinks it's huge) wedding for the Thanksgiving weekend. Throw in her move to Calgary and the fact that we are getting married in a city neither of us live in, and we will have a busy four months. I will try to pop in here every once in a while to contribute, but obviously it will not be my highest priority. I love the DCB project you started. I will probably start with writing up on all of the Ukrainians in the bunch. This will then give me the knowledge to beef up the Ukrainian Canadian page with the early history. -- JamesTeterenko 04:50, 31 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, and congratulations to you too. Both for your pending nuptuals as well as your pending adminship. I think 300 people will make a great party! -- JamesTeterenko 22:09, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
