Districts

Hi, I don't have an opinion on whether to use emdashes. When I first stated creating district articles, I used them, but someone changed them. Then all of a sudden, they changed back. Louis Riel

Thanks for the heads up about the Louis Riel article making it on the home page. That is awesome. I just got back from Winnipeg last night. Christie and I happened to make it to St. Boniface. Canadian Confederation clutter

The "clutter" you removed was supposed to be the following: a green tick next to each "yes", a red x-mark next to each "no". It seems that either the fonts or Unicode or something didn't display properly in your system, but either way you probably did right to revert it, since a problem faced by you will also be faced by a number of others. Perhaps I should think about replacing the unicode-dependent ticks and marks in my Template:Yes and Template:No with tiny images instead. And then it'll still be up to the people contributing in each article to decide whether they want them or not. Aris Katsaris 21:27, May 5, 2005 (UTC)

North West Territories Act of 1880

Hi there! I had some slow moments at work today and just discovered we actually had the statutes of Canada for 1880 in our office (It's amazing what you find when you're cleaning out cupboards!). Anyways, I took a look at that Act, which was one to consolidate the old acts of 1870, 1873 and 1875 into one new Act. It does not mention the transfer of the northern islands to Canada although does mention Keewatin, which was made a territory in 1880 when the islands got transferred, I think? Anyways, this actual transfer most certainly would have been done under a British Act of Parliament, but I just can't find anything online at this time. So I think my point is - the transfer of the northern islands don't fall under the 1880 NWT Act as you initially suspected. I don't have a clue if this makes sense, it is Friday afternoon and all.  :) CWood 22:45, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

Frederick Chase Capreol

Hmmm, my knowledge of CN's history doesn't quite go back that far, but based on a quick web search it appears that the Toronto, Simcoe & Lake Huron Union Railroad Company changed its name to the Ontario, Simcoe & Lake Huron Union Railroad Company (for example, see [1] [2]). It's still not clear to me whether it's "railway" or "railroad" or "rail-road". I have to go somewhere now but maybe I'll do a bit of digging tomorrow regarding the spelling. Battle of the Plains of Abraham

The Battle of the Plains of Abraham is very much a part of U.S. history, as well as Canadian and British history: American colonial troops were involved. If it's all the same to you, I'll restore the Category:U.S. history images to Image:Death-wolfe.jpg. You, of course, are free to add a Canadian tag to it as well. Socialist Party (England and Wales)/meta/shortname speedy deletion

Since I created this page, I can't remove the tag. However, it's a utility page used with the Template:Election box candidate with party link, and having it marked for delete is really messing with the expansion I'm trying to do at Cardiff South and Penarth (UK Parliament constituency). I will remove it, but I don't believe that this is a suitable mechanism for creating utility pages. If it is for a private template, perhaps something in your user heirarchy? Fawcett5 18:37, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

This template is used by every UK constituency page that I'm aware of - compare Cardiff Central (UK Parliament constituency), Bethnal Green and Bow (UK Parliament constituency), or just go to Results of the United Kingdom general election, 2005 and click around there for a little while to see how extensively it's used. It may be wrong, I wouldn't know; I didn't create the template, I'm just using it. Vashti, sorry, I didn't mark the colour metadata for deletion, so I'm not comfortable removing the tag. You really need to figure out where the appropriate place to create these utility pages is. Oh, you're probably right, but the metadata for the Labour Party (UK) and the Conservative Party (UK), just to take the two largest parties, are also in Main: and this is where the documentation for the template says to create them. hello. i read your message concerning adding, i believe it was, canadian track athletes cat to canadian sportspeople cat and not occupation by nationality. i can t seem to find where that was the case, although there were, i think, duplicate cats for canadian track athletes (likely owing some ambiguity with the word 'athletes' and how its used in american and british english). at any rate, i believe i ve got cat the sportspeople cats a bit better now. thanks again for the earlier message on not going to fine with provincial cats. regards, Mayumashu 05:11, 9 May 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for the award you put on my user page, it is much appreciated. Your DoCB project has got me too addicted to Wikipedia when I should be doing paying work. I was just looking for some Yukon historical figures when I stumbled upon it. And then, having been subjected to seven elementary school years of the Quebec version of Canadian History in the '60s in Montreal, I kept running into names I knew had to have articles. One question though, just out of curiosity. Why do you want regular dashes replaced with "ndash" in the dates? Or maybe you can point me to some reference in Wikipedia? You seem to have erroneously removed several of the most notable members of the Dalhousie faculty from the Notable faculty list. Is there a good reason for assuming that these faculty members are not notable? For the majority, I can argue otherwise. PD images?

Hi Zanium, I noticed that for some images you have cropped, (such as Pm sq turner.jpg), you have slapped a PD tag on them and say that you "release it into the public domain". But you just cannot DO that. You did not create the content, you just created a derivative work over which you probably have no rights. You should probably go back to each of these and put a suitable tag on them, presumably the same as for the originals, and provide also a link to the original images.... Speedy deletions

1. I'm happy to receive messages, but there's no need to write them in triplicate.
2. I take a list with three names, none linked, and no information, to be a reasonable speedy-deletion candidate, as the person who marked it as speedy also thought (total content: "Ebola, Marburg, AIDS"). Yes, I realised that the triplicate thing was a glitch — my remark was supposed to be light-hearted; sorry if it didn't come over that way.

With regard to speedies, I suppose that I have a number of things in mind: first, does it have the makings of an article? secondly, would doing all the checking (is there a suitable article under a different name? etc.) take more time than the creator put into creating it? I'm not saying that this is the conscious process that I actually go through, but it's more than an after-the-fact excuse.

In this case, though I checked Marburg and AIDS, I couldn't find reference to the former as a disease, and the latter isn't strictly speaking a blood-borne disease either. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 15:46, 20 May 2005 (UTC)

Ridings

I feel it is best to combine as many ridings as possible into each article as merging ridings makes it far easier for the reader. For instance the riding covering downtown Toronto, now named Toronto Centre, has had several names and in theory could be split into a half dozen different articles. It makes it far easier to follow the history when it is all placed in one article, however. Of the several hundred riding articles that existed before you began adding your stubs the majority contained the history of more than one riding and it would take a vast amount of work to untangle them. Moreover the List of Canadian federal electoral districts series already has the official list so there is no need for the categories to copy this. - SimonP 22:24, May 22, 2005 (UTC)

I reverted it to the way you had it, but once my edit was posted, JimWae's disappeared from the history list. I'm back.... occasionally

I had to laugh when I saw you welcome me back in the comment on Nestor Dmytriw. Yeah, I have been busy lately. And it will probably continue for a while. You see, Christie and I just got engaged last weekend and we are trying to pull off a decent size (I say 300 people is average, Christie thinks it's huge) wedding for the Thanksgiving weekend. Throw in her move to Calgary and the fact that we are getting married in a city neither of us live in, and we will have a busy four months. I will try to pop in here every once in a while to contribute, but obviously it will not be my highest priority. I love the DCB project you started. I will probably start with writing up on all of the Ukrainians in the bunch.
