Hello there Wshun, welcome to the 'pedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. If you ever need editing help visit Wikipedia:How does one edit a page and experiment at Wikipedia:Sandbox. If you need pointers on how we title pages visit Wikipedia:Naming conventions or how to format them visit our manual of style. If you have any other questions about the project then check out Wikipedia:Help or add a question to the Village pump. BTW, nice work in the math section. Cheers! --maveric149

It's not that four or five isn't long, it's that the combination of "someone once said" and "was once the longest" was too vague. If you have more info, something like "was the subject of a 13-movie series" (or whatever the number is) would be good. (All I know about Wong Hung is what you wrote here.)Vicki Rosenzweig

-- Hey Wshun. I am interested that you can use Chinese characters in Wiki. Do you know a lot more about which fonts Wiki can work in? My job for next year is to do anything that can help promote open source products regarding localization to Asian languages. I am working in Malaysia. I see Wiki as a great way to promote local content (no deep knowledge of HTML editors, complicated software, server purchase). As long as Wiki works in asian fonts and languages, should be quick to produce local content. Let me know if you are interested to help :~) This is being funded by Government of Malaysia, by the way, I work for www.mimos.my WillSmith (Malaysia)

Hi, I agree with your recent move of Ring (algebra) to Ring (mathematics). However, you should have used the Move this page feature, so that the history of the article is retained. Furthermore, when you do such a move, you need to make sure that any page that redirects to the old name (such as commutative ring), is changed so that it redirects to the new page. The reason is that double redirects are not allowed. You can find these redirects with What links here. Cheers, AxelBoldt 21:26 Feb 16, 2003 (UTC)

If you want to move a page to a new title, and there is already a page at the new title, then you first have to delete the page at the new title. This is what I just did with ring (mathematics). But of course, if you're not a sysop, then you can't delete articles, so I guess you're stuck. AxelBoldt 21:48 Feb 16, 2003 (UTC)

Please jump in and edit the China article to achieve what you feel in NPOV. Fred Bauder 07:45 Mar 15, 2003 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome! I liked your idea of highlighting important formulas in math articles. I left you a reply at Wikipedia talk:TeX markup which may work better for what you are trying to do. -- Wapcaplet 02:45 17 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Wshun,
[regarding the palindrome edit]
Wikipedia is open to everyone. I did what I believe is correct. If you disagree with me, you can edit the page to your liking, though I would say you are wrong. Japanese has 4 written systems, the text presented on that page is not showing the hiragana. The page shows the kanji which is definitely NOT symetric when you look at it. In the way it was presented, the phrases are symetric by sound.
I noticed you removed some Chinese palindromes from the page on the basis that they are not good example, that was based on your opinion. Are you a palindrome expert? I don't agree with what you did. But I will leave that decision to you. Moreover, Strictly speaking, the Chinese Palindrome is not symetric by letter. Chinese don't use letter. Each character is neither a word nor a letter. Are you fixing that too?
I don't do ping pong editing like other wikepedians would do. i.e. if you decide to revert my changes, I'll not change it back but I believe some other wikipedians will agree with me and revert your change to mine. I usually stay on the sideline to watch this kind of editing battles. So if you feel strongly about it, change it. I am not going to revert something that I believe in.

Wshun, after the discussion of Cantopop, I'm curious. Can you recommend some of the better examples? The stuff I've heard, and from talking to Australian friends who've spent time in Hong Kong, it's sickly sweet to mine and their ears. --Robert Merkel 09:08 25 Jun 2003 (UTC)

I think it's good to replace images with true Chinese-font characters in Radical (Chinese character). The radicals couldn't be copied-&-p'ed the way before. And those pix have weird rectangles around them, looks quite distracting. And true fonts can be resize in the browser by the viewers easily. --Menchi 04:17 8 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Have I done something wrong at New Imperialism, I believe I am being "civilized". Pizza Puzzle

Here is a "temp"; don't let it go to waste. New_Imperialism (temp) Some text, such as the long "definition of imperialism" paragraph at New Imperialism can be moved to imperialism -- other text has been moved to theories of imperialism -- topic specific text on the Panic of 1893 or the Congo Free State or Cecil Rhodes...or....or...etc can be reinserted at those appropriate locations. I urge you to read New Imperialism very closely and you will find some amusing things (not to mention a migraine headache). Pizza Puzzle

After going to all the trouble of making a temp page, 172 wont let me make a link to it on the New Imperialism page -- I do request your assistance since this was your idea. Pizza Puzzle

Please take the time to actually read all of New Imperialism before criticizing my text. I guarantee that I know for a fact you haven't done this because there are some very obvious issues - if you can actually be bothered to read the article. I understand if you don't want to read it. Maybe you have already read it - but Im pretty darn sure you couldn't have read it and still not see what Im talking about.

Also "New Imperialism" is way more than the 32k limit - this is not a difference between an amateur and an expert - the article at New Imperialism 'must be shortened. Pizza Puzzle

Why are you telling me to relax? Have I done something extreme? I am not the user who has been swearing, hurling insults and threats, and attempting to hide all dissenting comments. I am calmly and patiently wondering why you have asked me to go to all the trouble of making a temp page when you can't be bothered to examine the pages in question. Certainly, nobody else is interested in the temp page...so why did you ask me to make it? Pizza Puzzle

Thanks for being concerned with the article! Your presence has been extremely helpful! It will be divided into a history of Germany-style series. But dividing an article on such a topic is extremely difficult. It's going to require close examination to determine exactly how to divide it. We're going to need to balance the needs to divide it according to the best historical periodization and in a way that can be allowed by the structure of the article. This is going to be a deliberate process; and it would be best if I could get experts to offer advice. Right now, this is impossible due to Vera Cruz/PP's pernicious presence.

Since he has been banned many times, and has already alienated his most influential backers (such as Jtdril), I'm confident that Pizza Puzzle will be banned soon (I predict one week from today) and never given another chance to come on Wiki again, meaning that he'll be under a hard ban like Michael and Zog. He's been given just enough rope to hang himself, I've been told. When he's gone, someone (I won't do it) will be able to delete the incoherent gibberish on his New Imperialism temp page (given to him as a stopgap and sandbox to spare the main article) and we'll be able to do something about the length of New Imperialism.

In the mean time, I've learned from the Vera Cruz/New Imperialism debacle about half a year ago that it's useless trying to do something constructive with an article after he has hijacked it. 172

Good change to Divine right of kings! I've replaced the word Beware with Note and put the italicised line at the top of the page. I'm a bit puzzled by the user who keeps putting in the 'broader' and inaccurate information. He has a degree in Politics yet as in his rewrites in Royal Prerogative he seems not to grasp that these pages are about something narrowly defined, preferring the big picture, without grasping his big picture is mixing up different concepts that only sound somewhat similar. lol FearÉIREANN 00:50 26 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Hi there. On your question on HK Govt articles from pre-1990... they aren't in the public domain. The HK government owns the copyright in them. I guess we'd be ok, because the Wikipedia is supposed to be for academic criticism. In order to be certain, I'd separate/punctuate each article with commentary, so its clear we're not just infringing the copyright, but academically critiquing it. - David Stewart 02:48 26 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Hi, User:Hlavac has again tried to muck up the Divine right of kings through User:Roadrunner reverted it. On Royal Prerogative he moved the entire page to European Royal Prerogative and then inserted his own patently wrong 'theory' on the main page. I had to delete 'his' RP page, move ERP back to RP and then delete ERP (which is a totally made up term not one person on the planet other than him would ever use). I have complained about his behaviour on the problem users page. I think it is time people formally complained about his behaviour there. Maybe he might then realise that what he is trying to do is way beyond the bounds of acceptable behaviour. lol FearÉIREANN 19:33 26 Jul 2003 (UTC)~

Thanks for your nice comments. I might be overly optimistic, but I think that the edit war (or I should say edit wars since there are many disputes involved) are coming to a close. So far, the main problem not resolved is the status of the temp page. I'll wait for a consensus to build around the series before listing the temp page on the votes for deletion page. Once the temp page is gone, then the controversy will finally be over. 172 06:34, 1 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Please see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Chinese)/Name list example and comment. --Menchi 00:27, Aug 2, 2003 (UTC)

Hi Wshun. You are listed as having expressed an opinion on whether or not Daniel C. Boyer should be deleted. Can you please turn that opinion into a formal vote? Go to Talk:Daniel C. Boyer. Thanks. -- Tim Starling 09:52, Aug 2, 2003 (UTC)

re: styles of mathematics ...

wouldn't hurt. if anyone thinks it's redundant or should be changed to a different name or whatever, no harm is done; my main concern is how to provide access to it. Perhaps we should put it under the style section, as a "manual of syle", but then again, i don't think it should be as rigid as a manual, but subject to some degree of debate, since the organization of a math page or aggregate of pages is a fairly complex topic.

I made a link on my talk page to a page created under the title that you suggested. I'll post the link in mathematics->talk, requesting further cooperation and comments, and asking people to use the page.

(btw, thanks for the feedback on the frac. calc. pages --and I don't know that much about those other subjects, unfortunately.) -Kevin Baas 2003.08.02

Please take a look at Quantification and the related articles, and let me know if you don't like how the articles are arranged now. -- Toby Bartels 21:13, 2 Aug 2003 (UTC)

It looks like we missed something: WikiProject_Mathematics. However, I don't like the way this is set up. It seems pretty incoherent. Maybe we need a meta-meta-page? Ha ha!

Hello. I just looked at the deletion log, but I hesitate in fixing it (or, attempting to) as I don't think it's that important and I don't want to break the page :). I know that it's caused by junk HTML in deleted articles, but it seems like it would be a hassle to fix (too many nowiki tags). -- Notheruser 23:24, 5 Aug 2003 (UTC)

m:Trolls request your attention to m:Wikimedia press release policy. It needs attention from those who might understand the concept of English-language domination. There are no Asians at all involved in governance at present.

Also it tends to bring to light some issues (m:systemic bias, m:The ideal Wikipedia board, m:Wikipedia3 and m:Wikipedia4) that will have to be settled eventually, preferably, before there is a public commitment to any particular position that will bind a m:board that doesn't exist yet. Please help this process and refine the ways that m:Wikipedia Governance evolves into a more democratic small-g m:governance that doesn't rely on a clique of cabal. Who writes press releases, runs m:Wikimedia.

It seems multiple attempts to make Wikipedia more balanced across languages and democratize it have failed, and, it would be good not to miss this chance. A few old hands are wading in, and, perhaps, this is the remaking of the project.

Re: the move of Matrix norm to Vector norm on matrix space -- the latter gets 0 google hits, while the former gets many, so I'm moving it back to the commonly-used term. --Delirium 00:27, Aug 7, 2003 (UTC)

Hi, I've no idea why the tables go into one, in my browser they are placed next to each other (one right, one in the middle of the page). -- till we *) 00:33, Aug 11, 2003 (UTC)

Hi,

I saw your change on the "horse" page... I see also that there seems to be no Chinese horse page. I am curious whether anyone knows the technical Chinese term for "trot" -- none of my dictionaries actually have a word for this way of moving. "Walk" and "gallop" are no problem, but why no word for "trot"?

Hi, you cast a vote in the TEMP5 debate. The Temp5 proposal was voted down by 61.3% to 38.6%. We seem to be going around in circles on the whole issue of the main page. A new vote is now taking place to clarify what exactly we want, namely

  1. Do we actually want to have a new page?
  2. If so when (immediately, after a pause, timed to the press release, etc)?
  3. What do people want on the front page and what do they want excluded?

As of now, the whole issue seems surrounded by complete confusion. This way, finally and definitively, we will know what we want and when we want it. So do please express your opinions. The vote is on the same page as the previous votes. FearÉIREANN 20:31, 13 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Thanks for your concern. It means a lot to me. But it seems like I'm outvoted. I really have no other choice. 172 05:30, 15 Aug 2003 (UTC)

--- I hope so too. But it all depends on what happens with this Requests for adminship vote. 172 05:55, 15 Aug 2003 (UTC)
