Yes, it is I, Kaisershatner! Thanks for visiting. I have been editing here since 2004. I tend to disagree with my liberal friends and colleagues on political matters, but I believe very strongly that the objective facts about all views should be portrayed here as neutrally as possible.

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts."

--Daniel Patrick Moynihan

"The great ideas of the West—rationalism, self-criticism, the disinterested search for truth, the separation of church and state, the rule of law and equality under the law, freedom of thought and expression, human rights, and liberal democracy—are superior to any others devised by humankind. It was the West that took steps to abolish slavery...[t]he West has secured freedoms for women and racial and other minorities to an extent unimaginable 60 years ago. The West recognizes and defends the rights of the individual: we are free to think what we want, to read what we want, to practice our religion, to live lives of our choosing."

--Ibn Warraq, "Why the West is best."

"Arguing with anonymous strangers on the Internet is a sucker's game because they almost always turn out to be- or to be indistinguishable from- self-righteous sixteen-year-olds possessing infinite amounts of free time."

--Neal Stephenson, Cryptonomicon

"'To cause constellations of victories to flash forth at each instant from the zenith of the centuries, to make the French Empire a pendant to the Roman Empire, to be the great nation and to give birth to the grand army, to make its legions fly forth over all the earth, as a mountain sends out its eagles on all sides to conquer, to dominate, to strike with lightning, to be in Europe a sort of nation gilded through glory, to sound athwart the centuries a trumpet-blast of Titans, to conquer the world twice, by conquest and by dazzling, that is sublime; and what greater thing is there?'

'To be free', said Combeferre."

--Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

"When the situation was manageable it was neglected, and now that it is thoroughly out of hand, we apply too late the remedies which then might have effected a cure. There is nothing new in the story. It is as old as the Sibylline books. It falls into that long dismal catalogue of the fruitlessness of experience and the confirmed unteachability of mankind. Want of foresight, unwillingness to act when action would be simple and effective, lack of clear thinking, confusion of counsel until the emergency comes, until self-preservation strikes its jarring gong - these are the features which constitute the endless repetition of history."

--Winston Spencer Churchill, May 2, 1935.
