Topography map[edit]

Hi! Thanks for attempting a new map. An NPOV map you can use for reference is available here: Image:IndiaTest.png. Yes, the names are old, but its ok to retain the old alongside the new in the following cases: Mumbai (Bombay), Kolkata (Calcutta) and Chennai (Madras) as in image:IndiaMap2.PNG. Laccadives (islands) should be updated to Lakshadweep, Benaras to Varanasi and Hydarabad to Hyderabad. Thanks =Nichalp «Talk»= July 7, 2005 15:27 (UTC)

Hi! Could you save it as a PNG file instead of a JPEG. Thanks. =Nichalp «Talk»= July 7, 2005 18:32 (UTC)

This map is great! and its an NPOV one too. Thanks! A few caveats though: (I was a little sleepy and didn't notice it yesterday)

  1. Trivandrum is the old name, its new spelling is Thiruvananthapuram
  2. Similarly Cochin is now changed to Kochi. (both should be written in the Mumbai (Bombay) format.
  3. Ahmadabad is spelt wrong. It should be Ahmedabad.
  4. Dwarka is not a big town. Instead Rajkot could be added.
  5. Instead of Darjeeling, Gangtok can be added as it is a state capital.
  6. Other state capitals/important cities missing are Guwahati (Dispur is actually the capital) (Guw. is big city, twin city of Dispur), Agartala, Dehradun and Shimla, Shillong and Kavaratti (its in the Lakshadweep Is). A reference map
  7. In low resolutions, the names of the cities are a little dull, can it be brightened?

The image you uploaded is almost 3MB, so I don't know if you would be willing to modify it and re-upload. I would not wish to bother you again but if your willing.... thanks :)

I also don't know if you are aware of wikimedia commons. It would be highly advisable to upload the file in commons, as the same file can be embedded in all wikimedia projects (English, French, Wikiquotes etc.). Just create an account there to upload and add commons:category:Maps of India to the image. PS its easier to work with a PNG file to create derivative works due to the nature of PNG compression.

Finally for all your hard work I award you this barnstar:

I =Nichalp «Talk»=, award this barnstar to Captain Blood for his great topography map of India. July 8, 2005 07:10 (UTC)

I'll put up the older images for deletion. ( I cannot delete it right away according to policy rules) Regards and thanks, =Nichalp «Talk»= July 8, 2005 07:10 (UTC)

Thanks for the images. I have no problems with the map now (other than the fact that the text is dull). But for NPOV's sake, I feel the neighbouring countries' topo maps should also have the dotted lines. These new dotted lines which you have drawn, should be present on the maps of China, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bhutan and Myanmar. (Indirectly they may also appear in Nepal, Bangladesh and Tajikistan depending on the resolution and size of the image). Thank you once again for the images. (And I won't bother you anymore on PNG and commons :)=Nichalp «Talk»= 18:49, July 11, 2005 (UTC)
I think a blank one (with the cities marked, but no text) would be suited to those who would like to enhance the text in an image editor. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:31, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

States of India[edit]

Are there any topography maps for the states of India? =Nichalp «Talk»= 13:31, July 31, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the info. I guess that the only way out is to superimpose the state boundaries over a high resolution image and crop it. Too bad I suffer from low BW. Just curious... Did you hand draw the boundaries of Kashmir? =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:56, August 2, 2005 (UTC)
I know it must have taken you a long time. I thought it was just a simple superimposition of the map over the topography. No probs, I understand that it must be a stupendous effort getting Kashmir right. Thank for you time and effort and may you continue uploading country topo maps. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:32, August 5, 2005 (UTC)

Japan topo fr[edit]

Hallo, would it be possible for you to produce a map similar to Image:Japan_topo_en.jpg but in French for the french wikipedia ? your gmt map is really nice and french wikipedia is in need of a good map of Japan. It's probably just a list of names to translate. If you willing to help us, feel free to contact me on w:fr:Utilisateur:FoeNyx or on irc chan #fr.wikipedia on freenode.net --FoeNyx 21:15, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for the quick answer and the nice map :)
Here some labels to fix :
  • Ocean Pacifique → Océan Pacifique
  • Mar du Japon → Mer du Japon
Maybe (only if the uppercase on countries names is not automatically done by gmt) :
  • CORÉE DU SUD → Corée du Sud
  • CORÉE DU NORD → Corée du Nord
  • RUSSIE → Russie
And if possible the macron for long vowels:
  • Tokyo → Tōkyō
  • Kyoto → Kyōto
  • Kobe → Kōbe
  • Osaka → Ōsaka
  • Hokkaido → Hokkaidō
  • Kyushu → Kyūshū

Thank you :D --FoeNyx 10:49, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Map of Japan[edit]

Wonderful work on the topo map of Japan, Captain! That's an excellent map. Thank you! Fg2 20:43, August 14, 2005 (UTC)

Bhutan[edit]

Could you upload a topo map of Bhutan. I'll be working on it soon. Thanks. =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:49, September 4, 2005 (UTC)

I guess WP could be wrong, I'm currently trying to find the location coor through google maps. As for Bhutan's cities, the ones on the CIA map on the main page should suffice. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:43, September 5, 2005 (UTC)
I believe this link [1] to be the most accurate. Six more towns could be added. It's a very small country!

=Nichalp «Talk»= 19:01, September 5, 2005 (UTC)

  • Ok I'll be logging off now. I think a zoomed version of the map would be better. Thanks =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:11, September 5, 2005 (UTC)
Most of the article is complete User:Nichalp/Bhutan, and the map would be great. If you crop it tightly, you needen't draw too much of the disputed borders. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:17, September 6, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the nice map Captain! =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:12, September 6, 2005 (UTC)

Nepal[edit]

Captain Blood, another request. I have completed Bhutan (its on its way to Featured status!) and have set my eyes on Nepal. I also plan to clean Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the future. I hope the three maps can be done, though I'm not in a big hurry for the latter two. Thanks once again. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:44, September 10, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks once again for the map. =Nichalp «Talk»= 10:33, September 11, 2005 (UTC)

Maps and GMT[edit]

Hi, Captain. After seeing some of your impressive work on maps, I've been trying to find a tutorial on how to make relief maps with GMT. After a little practice, I handle coastlines and borders acceptably, but I can't seem to find beginner-level info on building reliefs. Any help would be greatly appreciated; *NIX syntax is not a problem (I've been using that for years), but the GMT documentation is even more terse than usual. Best, Taragüí @ 14:28, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot. I'll be following it as soon as I compile my GMT from source. It seems that the Debian package (my choice of Linux) does not include grdraster by default. Mind if I pester you in case of further doubts? Taragüí @ 22:36, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Your map Image:Afghan topo en.jpg is very nice. I uploaded your map to Commons. Then I wrote the page named ヒンズークシュ山脈 (Hindu Kush) in ja.wikipeida.org. Thank you. Hareno 14:56, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Map of India[edit]

Hello Captain Blood,

Excellent work! I am interested in obtaining an unlabeled copy of the India GMT map. If possible please mail it to me at greatjat @gmail.com. Thanks.

Thanks a lot Capt. Blood.

Topomap Ukraine[edit]

hello
please generate and upload an topomap of todays ukraine, like the poland topo map. KaiKotzian 15:10, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Your mapmaker's manual[edit]

Hello Cap'n. I just discovered your tutorial from whence all those sharply colour-contrasted topographic maps come, and look forward to attempting to create some myself. In the meantime, would you consider contributing one or more of the maps requested here and here? It would be greatly appreciated. //Big Adamsky 01:23, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Too hard[edit]

I find using GMT too hard. I just got bug after bug when follow your tutorial. The core is data from http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/topo/gltiles.html and http://dss.ucar.edu/datasets/ds759.3/; is there any other tools for creating maps from these data/or other free data, which is much easier to use? I cannot still make any graphics out of GMT.134.157.5.208 16:12, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, GMT is not easy to use. You need to work through the GMT tutorial, (I should have added that warning to my tutorial, now done). However, there seems to be a graphical front end for GMT: [2], maybe you should try that. However if you need a certain map, you can tell me, maybe I can create it. --Captain Blood 11:26, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Iran topo map[edit]

Hello Captain Blood. I'm an italian user and I'm interested in getting your topographic map of Iran without labels (in other words, a blank map). I am writing the article about Geography of Iran in the italian wiki and I'm not able to find any good image in the public domain. I've tried to use the GMT but I'm using Windows and I find it too complicated. Could you load it in the Commons files please? Or you can find me in the italian wiki, I'm Pedro I. Thanks.

India : Western Ghats[edit]

We are developing a trekking/travelling wiki for Karnataka. It would be useful to have topgraphical maps that cover the Deccan Plateau. Preferrably, one single map covering the entire plateau. And four others, zoomed-in on diffierent parts of it.

It would be even nice, if the city/road information is available as a separate overlay. That way, we will be able to take one map as reference, highlight relevant places and draw route information on it. So, from one map, we would be able to generate route guides for several destinations.

Please mail me at e (dot) pharaoh (at) gmail (dot) com and I will elaborate further if needed. Thanks.

Btw, great job on the Indian topological map!

More GMT questions[edit]

Hey there, I was trying to follow your tutorial for overlaying topographic data using GMT. When I try to do the first command (grdraster on e10g), it says there's an error reading the file. If I change the command by removing the output file, grdraster sends everything to stdout, and it seems like all the third values in all the tuples are NaNs. I think I have to prepare e10g somehow into GMT's format. If I don't, I just have no idea what I'm missing. I'd appreciate any tips you could offer. Xaxafrad 00:26, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Topo map request[edit]

I see the great topographic maps you made, for example, I would love to see one for Algeria, an article I'm working on, thanks! --escondites 16:00, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

Very much impressed with your topographic map of the British Isles. Is there any chance that you could provide the co-ordinate lists of towns, areas etc. please that you used?

Thanks. —Wereon 21:18, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Datei:AlterOrient2.png[edit]

Hi!

I saw that you've made a great map of the ancient orient with the Hitties, the Assyrians, and the Egyptians in 1400 BC. I was wondering whether you also have an English version of this file? I would like to post an english version of this map at the Ancient History Encyclopedia, if you are happy to let me do so. Thamis (talk) 12:25, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
