Internet Art
By Rachel Greene
London, Thames & Hudson, 2004.
Rachel Greene was Executive Director of Rhizome.org. Her knowledge of matters connected to the issue of art in the Internet era is supported both by her involvement in the web based resource Rhizome.org and by her activity as curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York.
The book is a survey of the history of Net Art that is still young as a discipline, but deeply connected with issues of New Media art, which bring us back to the early XX century and to Futurism and, through Video Art and Electronic Art, present us our today. What emerges is the idea of web as a way to communicate. If the first meaning of Internet was to distribute information, with Net Art we have still a distribution of information where information assumes the shape of sabotage or critic, suggesting the idea of Net Art as a form of Intellectual Activism.
From Bunting to Cosic, from Jodi.org to RTmark, from etoy to Joy Garnett, from Coco Fusco to Cory Arcangel, this book is the perfect database of databases, a new handle sourcebook for the lucky series “World of Art” published by Thames & Hudson.
