Here is what I did: All day I sat and wept In a green park At land’s end. Sat To wait amidst the stones, The tributes to war-dead, Where millions pass alive, Laughing and passing. The Descendants. On holiday.

Here is what I saw: Red tongues wriggling From open mouths and In to stony slabs; Blue water pouring Out from granite heads and In to breathing hearts, Back and forth and never One drop spilt.

There is where I sat Until the time had come. Until the waiting passed. Until the cups were full. Until the poppies bloomed To button the war-deads’ eyes.
