City's name and origin[edit]

There are two theories about the origin of the name Arequipa before the Spanish conquest. Both Andean languages are mentioned: Quechua and Aymara. In Quechua, it is said that Mayta Capac, the fourth Inca, was traveling through this land with his soldiers to camp around the territory. When it was time to leave, some of his soldiers asked if they could stay, to which the Inca responded "Ari Quepay", which in Quechua means "yes, you may stay". The Quechua version gets more hits in Google than the Aymara version, which says 'ARI' means 'summit' and 'QUIPA' for 'laying behind', with some adding the "mountain" part to say El Misti backs such theory. The various times I've visited Arequipa, most people there mention the Quechua version as the more plausible one, including the travel agency guides around the city. --Dynamax 18:41, 20 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you revert? Funny concept to replace the statements of linguists by those of travelling agencies. Made a separate Name heading, following the Spanish version.

I heard another theory about the name; that when a European asked the local ruler what is the name of the place, the latter thought that the European asks for a permission to sit down, and gave him the permission, which sounded similar to "Arequipa". —Preceding unsigned comment added by Omeganian (talkcontribs) 09:36, 30 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Notable people from Arequipa[edit]

I'm not sure of what is the system to add some "notable" people to the wikipedia. I mean, I live here and haven't heard of three of these guys: Enrique Urízar Berríos, Painter, President of the Artist Association of Arequipa. Come on... does any town in this planet needs to have the name of the president of the artist association? I could as well add my dad, secretary of the local Apra party. It's just awful to use an encyclopedia to promote yourself or someone you know.

Julio Malaga Grenet, Famous caricaturist.

Yep, he's SOOOO famous in Arequipa. [Who's that guy?]

Well if that's how you truly feel, I will respect your wishes concerning other names. I will be in Arequipa in June; please meet me so we can discuss this more. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.227.177.172 (talk) 02:34, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gustavo R. Paz-Pujalt, Scientist and inventor

NEVER EVER heard of him. Come on. I'm going to erase those three guys. Please, if you're from Arequipa let's discuss this [I could be in a mistake, anyway] But if you're just some wiki conservationist maniac don't reverse my edits. Thank you.

El Misti[edit]

Can someone move the picture of El Misti? Section lines cross over it and I don't know how to move it. S♦s♦e♦b♦a♦l♦l♦o♦s (Talk to Me) 23:01, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

we need a picture of Misti —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cutespicy (talkcontribs) 03:01, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Population estimates[edit]

Why doesn't the population estimate in the infobox match the one in the article introduction? Could we please verify what year's estimate is being used in each instance? Rafajs77 (talk) 16:09, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Translation improvement needed[edit]

Would someone who is bilingual take a look at this section. Do the sources for this section relate to the city or to the province? Some of the English sounds as if it might be referring to the province.

The second paragraph of Location was:

The central part of the city is crossed by the River Chili from north to south in its wake
is a valley called the valley of Arequipa or valley of Chili, which is protected to the
north and east by the Andes mountain range and sash to the south and west by the
chains of low hills. The valley plays a decisive role, Arequipa valley open to the coast
and the mountains to conform with his status among the sandy desert oasis and
an intermediate mountain highlands and reasonable articulation and communication
systems developed in-house, current location that allows it to strategically articulate
the coast and the mountains being a city in the middle of the two regions.

Google doesn't seem to do very good translating es:Arequipa#Localización. Feel free to replace my attempt to remove some nonsensical wording. Also consider the more natural English wording (sans sources) from 27 November 2012.

Translation[edit]

The entire article appears to have been translated by a very poor program. Some of it is so bad, so incomprehensible, that one doesn't even know how to begin correcting it. Translation of this sort should obviously be avoided. It would be better to start over from scratch rather than to try to improve the published content, but perhaps enough bi-linguals will tackle it so that the translation of the original Spanish article is no longer embarrassing. If it weren't so sad, it would actually be very funny. The Spanish word manzana could mean an apple or it could mean a square block. Of course, the translating program chose to use apple rather than the correct meaning, a square block. Please, people, do not use translating programs. They're great for translating a word or two, but not for translating a whole article. Azangaro Joe (talk) 21:09, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, even over a year after your comment, no attempt seems to have been made to fix it. I couldn't even fathom what large parts of the article was trying to tell me. If it's not going to get fixed, just remove it. As it stands now, it's all rather useless as information. 84.49.75.226 (talk) 14:24, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've done a little bit, but you're probably right; much of this article should just be heaved out. Having said that, I don't have the heart - or maybe guts - to do that; I always end up just tweaking a couple spots. We could really use a more knowledgeable editor. - DavidWBrooks (talk) 20:37, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

AREA[edit]

How can has Arequipa area over 9 000 km2, almost 10 000 km2? Is it so large like Jamaica? Historical center has area 3,3 km2, so what is area of Arequipa? Pimlico27 (talk) 15:42, 21 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a food called "suck"?[edit]

I don't know if this is vandalism for a Spanish/local term but the use of "suck" in this list of foods seems odd ... does somebody know if it's correct? "Monday: Chaque, Tuesday: Chairo, Wednesday: Chochoca, Thursday: Suck Colorado or potato flour, Friday: Suck on Friday, Saturday: stew or Timpusca and Sunday: white broth or Pebre loins" - DavidWBrooks (talk) 19:50, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Recoleta library[edit]
