I didn't bother about the wealthy Californian farmer, but Charlemagne (Charles the Great) reigned from AD 771 to 814. I searched "Frankish King", got to a list of Frankish kings, then tried to go from there. '-magne' leapt out at me after I scanned the whole page trying to look for "the great". Clovis I (reigned 481 - 511) shares his name with Clovis Marshall Cole after whom Clovis, California was named. From the article, Cole was "the largest grain grower and cattle rancher in the area, nicknamed 'Wheat King of the Nation'", so he must have been wealthy. But was Clovis I great? It's not mentioned in the article, and he's not on List of people known as The Great, but fortunately there is a redirect Clovis the Great, so I guess he must have been. What Lee said: the answer could be found via the disambiguation page Clovis. There could well have been farmers named Charles, but without any wikipedia reference, they weren't correct. Eugene van der Pijll 01:54, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)
