Untitled[edit]

I wonder if the description of the diggers as a theater group is accurate -- until now, I knwe about them as a political activists group or maybe even as a (small) social movement. Especially the free shops and their activities in Summer-of-Love-SF do not sound theatrical. -- till we | Talk 22:08, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Free Stores[edit]

Updated the description of the free stores based on information from the Peter Coyote memoir. The original wording seemed to suggest that the free stores operated primarliy via extortion. Wanted to include a reference to the "recycling" aspect of these stores. - Jimdoria—Preceding undated comment added by Jimdoria (talkcontribs) 17:36, 21 June 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Comment Removal[edit]

I removed the following comment and edited the last sentance to take it's view into account.

"Added comment: That last sentence (above) is no way to sum up the subject. I know of only one leading member who used heroin. I also know some leading members who lost interest in the city project and moved on to other work on things such as high school education and the environment and are still doing it. d.c."— Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.143.56.73 (talk) 00:47, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Diggers influence[edit]

I've removed the current entry re the phrase "you dig". Dig meaning understand/take notice of was in use well before the sixties - Lenny Bruce for one was using it in the late 50s. MichaelW 22:30, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Title[edit]

I believe that the title of this article should say "Digggers (San Francisco)" rather than "Diggers (theater)." The Diggers were not specifically a theater group. They were, as the article describes, a radical counterculture group in the Haight-Ashbury Neighborhood of San Francisco. It is important to distinguish the Diggers from other groups also called the Diggers, like the original Diggers from England and the Los Angeles Diggers. Theater also implies a much more formal type of theater than the Diggers employed, which was more along the lines of "life acting."

I am unsure of exactly how to change the title of this page, so I would greatly appreciate it if someone who was more Wikipedia-savvy would help me out.

I intend to make much more extensive edits to this page in a few weeks. I am currently writing a research paper on the Diggers and their relationship with other groups of the Haight-Ashbury counterculture.
