The Blue Bomber[edit]

The article said: In the English-speaking world, Mega Man's popularity and color scheme have resulted in him earning the nickname, "Blue Bomber" (which also went on to be used in game in Mega Man Powered Up).

There is nothing that supports or proves that anybody calls him the Blue Bomber, so I have changed it to: In parts of the English speaking world, a small few have renamed Mega Man t "The Blue Bomber" because of his blue armor.

As for why I made the change, the only two times I've ever heard him called this is when someone called him that and directed me here because this is where they first learned of the name, and the article itself. Megaman is becoming known as the Blue Bomber, but only because someone put that in this article in the first place. There is no attributable source saying that Megaman is called the Blue Bomber on a wide scale. If he was called the Blue Bomber in Mega Man Powered Up, then someone should put it there, though I noticed that the name in question wasn't mentioned in that article at all. It is just as much a conjecture to claim that few call him by that name as it is to say that many do. It is quite a popular nickname in game magazines, for certain, and I think the first time I ever heard of Mega Man it was in connection to the nickname. I think one source of this nickname (whether or not it was started here or not) was Nintendo Power magazine. The name "Blue Bomber" was used to describe him in several issues and articles in the late (very late) 80's and early 90's. However, I am not sure whether they coined this phrase or simply helped perpetuate this name. Also, in the first episode of the American Mega Man cartoon series (The Beginning), Proto Man is quoted, "Mega Man! Japanese name format[edit]

The following text was added by an anon:

Trivia: The official spelling of the character name in Japan is actually "Rockman" without a space. This is because the Japanese language does not use spaces. Capcom's official stand in the issue of character-names in western Mega Man games however is that the names ought to be written with a space (even the popularily used Protoman). This has caused a lot of confusion since in some older games where translations have not been as accurate the names were sometimes presented without the space. Regardless, even the name of the main character is often written incorrectly even by Capcom.

I'm not really enthusiastic about letting this sit as it is, (1) because it was added after the {{stub}}, but more importantly, (2) because it takes up a sizeable portion of the page explaining a minor technicality. As such, I've made a minor change on the article to reflect the (valid) point made here, but also moved the text here so that it might be incorporated into a future, longer version of the page. ... Monsteropolis et al[edit]

Concerning the latest edits by 193.65.112.2, here is why they are wrong:
Monsteropolis appears only in the manual for Mega Man on NES and contradicts both Japanese canon and later games.
The Rock Upper can be clearly seen in Mega Man VII's secret one-on-one battle mode; perform it with QCF Y. In this game it was based on the Slash Claw weapon, but in Rockman 2: the Power Fighters its animation was redrawn to be more clearly a solar energy attack.
Consensus shown on Talk:Mega Man series shows that the name should be written "Mega Man" and not "MegaMan" (whcih was never correct for the original series). --Boco XLVII 14:12, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)

There is some debate as to where exactly he lives. Some believe he lives in the midwestern United States while others assume he lives in Japan. It's generally accepted that he lives with Dr. Light. (It's worth noting that the instruction booklet for the American release of the original Mega Man lists the character as hailing from "Monstropolis," which most likely derives from the words "monster" and "metropolis;" literally, "monster city.")

Well since I wrote that section, and the fictional character history ( which goes together ). I 1st want to thank you ( or whoever ) for giving me credit. Secondly for not removing it entirely from wikipedia ( I agree its doesnt belong on the character page). Still, I think the section should be part of the Mega Man ( classic series ) page. Each spinoff or classification of the series i.e. MMX,Legends etc. should have a fictional history section providing a summary of the plot and conclusion. Megaman as an Asimovian Robot?[edit]

The current article reads: "Mega Man, like most robots, obeys Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, particularly the First Law: "A robot may not harm a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm." "

Is this really true? I find it hard to believe. Megaman is always killing little robot creatures, and consistently attacks Dr. Wily at the very end -- surely there is a possibility that Wily might die, making Megaman's behavior not quite Asimovian. I think it's in a more heroic sense of the first law. However, in regards to that, the robots he destroys aren't human...they're, you know...robots (ones trying to hurt humans to boot). So that point is completely irrelevent. As far as attacking Wiley, it was in defense of humanity. Also, incidentally, Megaman never achieved the act of killing Wiley albeit implicit attempts to the contrary. So, I think that's pretty true to Asimov's first rule. Keep in mind that in none of the megaman games does he ever actually go after the surrendering wily, megaman only ever attacks his machines, once he has destroyed the machine where Wily hides megaman stops attacking.

There is of course, one exception. In that game ending (I dont want to spoil anyone) is where Asimov's rule is mentioned, and that is what gives the most relevance to the article section quoted by wdaher.Cauzilo 03:44, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I only agree with this in 1 series Megaman: Battle Network 3 Lan says that he thought him and Megaman killed Dr. Wily this means that they tried to kill him in the first 2 battle network games. Rockman iX?[edit]

He is, to a certain extent, IX is character from the megamission rockman x collecting cards (I understand they are battle cards?) he was further fleshed out in the megamission episode of "rockman remix" by Hitoshi Ariga ( check link for scanlation http://tanjou.northmark.net/megamission.php) and also Cauzilo 03:43, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]


Reason why Rockman is named Mega Man outside Japan[edit]

Capcom USA is very secretive when it comes to explain their bad dubbing and character renaming, but with a little digging, every answer can be found.

One of the most known change are the names Balrog, Vega and M. Bison in Street Fighter, but even before this legendary fighting game got the change, our Blue hero got his.

As you know, you can have products with the same name in the same category. For example, I can be able to market a Yo-Yo and call it a Yo-Yo, same deal when it comes to video games. The reason is because of the first ammendment freedom of speech if you get something from another country you should be able to call it by the name it was marketed that way people can understand what it is and not be like these weaboo rockman fans and say "I like rockman" and have people go "I like megaman". So how does this affect Rockman? Take a look at these two pictures before I continue:

These were cassette games for the Commodore 16 and it’s the ultimate proof why we’re stuck with such a 1960 hero name like Mega Man. Now I’s no lawyer, that’s a fact, but even back in 1987, there could have been a way to buy that name from this company (Mastertronic) in order to use the name Rockman for the NES since these Commodore games were never planned to be ported to a game consoles in the first place.

Then again, perhaps Capcom did not imagine that this single game would have spun off half a million sequels and spin-offs, so maybe that’s why they didn’t bother.

But still, if it’s just a question of being cheap, I’m sure Capcom USA is kicking themselves in the nuts every time they have to change the NA titles of a new Rockman game (most Japanese games have English menus at the title screen, so this is not something that’s normally changed in when translating unless the title needs to be changed).

Also, even if there was no way of using the name back then, Mastertronic sort of died after being purchased by SEGA in the early 90’, so they could have swallowed their pride by now and changed the name like SEGA did for Eggman (Robotnik) and Nintendo for Princess Peach (Princess Toadstool).

For some reason, I think it would've been harder for Mega Man fans to accept him as Rockman than it was for Mario fans to accept Princess Toadstool as Peach. Jeff Silvers 16:00, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm neutral on this. It looks very suitible for "blue" characters such as Rockman presently, but I previewed the infobox on Zero and on a more varied article, Nightmare Police; it looked quite shabby. Gate didn't look nice at all.
Perhaps I'm used to seeing the old infoboxes but I've no idead why it looks so horrid on some drawn illustration images. It doesn't seem to mesh into the background paticularly well. -ZeroTalk 20:54, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mega Man, MegaMan, Megaman[edit]

Which is correct? The character is spelled Megaman in (as far I know...) all the classic and X series, so should it not be the correct name? MegaMan is wrong in classic, X and Zero, but is right in Battle Network. Mega Man is more for the games titles then the characters. --23:49, 3 July 2006 (UTC)


MegaMan is used in Legends, and possible Battle Network. Mega Man and Megaman are both acceptable for the remaining three, but Capcom is now leaning towards Mega Man.

Mega Man (character) to GA status[edit]

Hey guys. I did a huge write up today and hoped it would bring the article one step closer to GA status. There are still lots of things to be done, and hopefully I can help get to them in the next few days. Remember, you can help!

  • Clean up and "de-universe" the Character section. For articles on fiction, this is important.
  • Copy editing
  • Get more sources! Mods looooove sources, and with Mega Man, there's no shortage of sites.
  • Outside info on Mega Man, like TV show references, books, and even stuff from other games.
  • Some info on "Rockman Perfect Memories" would be nice.
  • Fluff and expand certain sections (But not too much! There is such a thing as too big of an article, look at Mario).
  • Peer review. Maybe not now, but eventually.
  • Any other good ideas from other fiction/character pages that have been Good/Featured.

Noting Megaman's supposed appearence in Brawl[edit]

There's been a paragraph in the "In Other Games" section, which says in one way or another, that Megaman might appear in Brawl. I tried removing it, as per WP:CRYSTAL, but it seems there's some disagreement about it. First, let me point out that there is no verifiable source stating that Megaman will, 100% positive, be in Brawl. Until Masahiro Sakurai specifically says that Megaman will make an appearence in Brawl, it isn't a sure thing that he'll be in it. All there is about Megaman's appearence in Brawl so far is just fan speculation - which I doubt is a reliable source. Now, I want Megaman to be in Brawl as much as the next person, but wait until it's confirmed he'll be in it before putting it on Wikipedia.

I'm removing the current incarnation of the paragraph, since it's based off of the editor's observation of a video and violates WP:NOR. Get an outside, verifiable, reputable source stating the same thing, and it might be alright. Ibm2431 01:34, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganization[edit]

Hey maybe this article could be reorganized to something close to Solid Snake's article, focusing less on "Abilities" and other such sections and focusing more on his out-of-universe impact. ロックマン Romanji[edit]

On all Megaman articals features Rokkuman as the romanji for ロックマン. But when I translated it it came out Rotukuman, as ロ=Ro, ッ=tu, ク=ku, マ=ma, ン=n. So where does the second K come from? Sarujo (talk) 12:52, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're not taking the ッ character properly. While ツ can be romanized as "tsu", ッ (known as a soukon), is completely different. What the soukon does is imitate the following consonant sound. 'Rainbow Man' name possibility section[edit]

I have added information to the article and because this is one of my first attempts at wikipediaing I don't think i did it properly. I added this prior to finding my source, however no one has contested it yet. The information about a possibility of his name being "Rainbow Man" upon initial release in the US was based on an article out of Nintendo Power Magazine. If I recall it is the same issue that has the walkthrough for Mega Man 5 and the fan submitted art that spawned Knight Man and Wind Man in Mega Man 6. However, all my back issues are in storage so I cannot add the proper issue to site. If anyone has this issue or knows which it is to site please add a citation to the information. Once i am able to get into my storage unit I will dig out the proper issue so that it can be cited properly. Megaman.EXE character[edit]

I do think we should make some mention of the NetNavi character in this page. When I looked up Megaman, it was this character I was hoping to find information on, not the robot. If anything else, we could always employ disambiguation. Megaman exe has his own article and it would also not make much sense to mention him here because this is about the Mega Man from the original series. Mega Man and Mega Man X are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. They should NOT be merged into the same character on Wikipedia. That will only further confuse newcomers of the series.

All X titles have an X in their title, and do NOT use Roman Numerals that the "Classic" series uses. They involve X, whom according to "Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X", he is NEVER given the name "MEGA MAN", only "X"! He is NOT named a Mega Man, just as Zero is not named "MEGA MAN" in the Zero series. The title remains "MEGA MAN" because it is part of the Mega Man saga!

However, Rockman, AKA Mega Man here in the states, turns INTO Mega Man to fight Dr. Wily or other random evils that rear their heads in "Classic" series. He is called Mega Man all the time, but when in his "boy" form he is referred to as "Rock". This is his "given" or "birth" name. Just like Peter Parker is not called Spider Man unless he is in the suit, Mega Man is not called by that name unless he is in HIS suit.

Origin of Megaman (Legends Megaman)[edit]

As a lot of people learned the origin of the original Mega Man from Mega Man 4, Mega Man Legends's Megaman sadly did not have his origin story in a video game. The truth is that Mega Man Legends's Mega Man's origin is in a Comic Book/Manga thing (it looks like a Manga with Color and goes left to right) I wouldn't want to spoil it but this Mega Man is really a human created by Dr Light because he was super lonely with only a daughter and wanted a son so he built Mega Man once again not spoiling it but tell your thoughts. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fireriku546 (talk • contribs) 01:05, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I doubt that was an official source and simply a fan creation since from what I heard is that according to the Rockman Perfect Memories the legends series took place thousands of years after the X series. Considering the nature of those things, like changing twenty-third to 23th, and Dr Wily to Dr Willy, its safe to assume its intentional. Can we make an actual page for Akira Kitamura?[edit]

Akira Kitamura is credited for Legendary Wings, Cocoron, Megaman 1 and 2, and possibly an anime series? Also, Kitamura-san might be a female sci-fi author, and I can't find any actual primary sourcing for this. Unsourced-but-prominent claims (IMDB and the interview translator) disagree. Also also, Kitamura-san is apparently behind a fair bit of Mega Man's level design formula, making them an important part of level design history!

History is so cool, and I'd really like to know more about this cool person.
