Untitled[edit]

A Washington Post, May 15, 2003 article has the sisters playing as a group in 1939, four years prior to the reputed split-up of the Carter Family group. I have a reserve on the biography mentioned in the "References" section and I will try to clarify this when I get it. The Post article is here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A62042-2003May15.html

Also, it looks like Johnny Cash was husband number 3. See an informative biography in the Tennessean: http://tennessean.com/entertainment/news/archives/03/05/32812679.shtml?Element_ID=32812679

Can't find anything about the 2003 released album that 130.39.113.1 mentions. Anyone have info on this one?

Wfeidt May 16, 2003

I find some seemingly reliable sources giving "Maces Springs" as the homestead, while others use the singular, "Maces Spring". Sometimes I see both usages in the same document. Anybody know for sure which is right?

Wfeidt May 19, 2003

The Washington Post goes for Maces Springs [1] and also confirms two previous husbands, but no mention of a 2003 release. I suggest that the reference to the 2003 album be moved to here and the comment on Johnny Cash being the 3rd husband be reinstated. Tiles 01:35 22 May 2003 (UTC)

Thanks, Tiles. Sound good to me. And yes, "Will you miss me when I'm gone?" confirms the second husband (Nix) during the Nashville period. User 130.39.113.1 added, "In 2003, she released her last album", but we've been unable to confirm this or discover the title. Any further help will be appreciated. Bill 11:06 22 May 2003 (UTC)

CNN has an article [[2]] on Johny Cash and they mention that June died on June 12. I don't know if this is accurate. --Dori 14:35, 12 Sep 2003 (UTC)

The CNN article actually says "Cash's wife of 35 years, June Carter Cash, died May 15", which agrees with this article. Tiles 06:19, 13 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Jackson?[edit]

Two questions, who wrote "Jackson" and did Johnny and June (or June and her first husband) get married there? Just wondering. - Kevingarcia 04:59, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

the song "Jackson" was written by Jerry Leiber and Billy Edd Wheeler and has nothing to do with the actual marriage of June and Johnny Stoffl.s (talk) 21:15, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
True the song was not inspired by the marriage, but June did finally accept his proposal live on stage during the performance of the song. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tomsv 98 (talkcontribs) 18:58, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Related to Jimmy Carter?[edit]

I've read that June Cash and Jimmy Carter are related? Is this true and how can this assessment be verified? 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Seem to recall this was discussed in Cash: the autobiography. But don't have a copy on me to check. - Mjb may 13

I've checked both of their ancestries on Rootsweb.com, and don't see any common connection. Jimmy's ancestors were from Georgia, while June's were in Virginia. - RobertCMWV1974 13:49, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jimmy Carter's ancestors were from Virginia before they were from Georgia (see http://www.jimmycarterlibrary.org/documents/jec/genealog.phtml). Both descended from a Thomas Carter Jr. there (Jimmy's great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather; one less generation for June). See http://www.silcom.com/~peterf/ideas/genealogy.htm for June's geneology back that far. So it looks like they're 7th cousins once removed. If true, this would require Moore Carter's birth date ("c. 1680") to be a few years later than estimated, and would need Moore Carter and Peter Carter to be half-brothers. --Stellmach 22:54, 1 August 2006 (UTC) Aha! Per User:Alcuin's recent reference, it looks like those are indeed two different Thomas Carter Juniors. Which seems to clear up the question as well as where the confusion came from in the first place. --Stellmach 19:43, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If I'm right, June and Jimmy were actually related. It is said that Jimmy was the cousin of June. The wikipedia page of June Carter says; 'Carter's distant cousin, the former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, became closely acquainted with Cash and Carter and maintained their friendship throughout their lifetimes. In a June 1977 speech, Jimmy Carter acknowledged that June Carter was his distant cousin, with whom they shared a common patrilineal ancestor.' So, yes, they are actually related. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.28.169.212 (talk) 08:32, 20 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Carter-Cash?[edit]

In the second paragraph, the names are hyphenated. Which is it? Hyphenated or not?

This has been fixed. Her last name was Cash.Tomsv 98 (talk) 19:02, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Still Valerie June?[edit]

It would be nice, in terms of knowing how to present the information, to confirm whether her name was legally changed to June (her middle name) at any point. I'd presume not, but have no reference. --Stellmach 14:18, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

First family of country music?[edit]

Could someone enlighten me as to what the "first family of country music" ´means. Thanks. --Ezeu 03:31, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The term doesn't appear in the article, unless I'm much mistaken.
Nevertheless, I gather it's sometimes used to describe the Carter family, including Johnny and June's children, due to the number of prominent performers there. -Stellmach 16:52, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It does not appear because I removed it. --Ezeu 00:31, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Carter family was named the "First Family of Country Music" around 1970, when they were elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame. They were some of the earliest bluegrass / gospel singers. Sara, Maybelle and A.P. Carter recorded in the late 1920's in Bristol, TN. The Carters were from Mecas Springs, VA. Maybelle (Mother Maybelle) and her husband Ezra are buried in Hendersonville, TN, near the graves of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash.

Hand-picked for the role?[edit]

Were Witherspoon and Phoenix hand-picked by Carter and Cash for the roles in Walk the Line? I found the Oregon Herald article that indicates they were but I also just found some conflicting statements in this Yale Daily News article. The Yale article states that Phoenix definitely was selected by Cash but Witherspoon may not have been. This Vogue Feature Article featured on Style.com states that Witherspoon actually never met Carter before she died in 2003. Here is an article from The Independent that sort of agrees with both: "Witherspoon never met Carter, who died in 2003, four months after the death of her husband. But she had already given the actress her blessing." Downstream 16:31, 24 March 2007 (UTC) June Carter Cash died four months before Johnny Cash.[reply]

Ring of Fire authorship, Vivian Cash's P.O.V.[edit]

I recently read the autobographical "I walked the line" by Vivian Cash(Johnny's first wife), and in it Viv claimed that Ring of Fire was written by Johnny (about June's vagina), and that Johnny told Vivian that he was giving June songwriting credit because he "felt bad" for the latter, and she "needed the money". Vivian also presented a completely different account of the origins June and Johnny's relationship, and June's character in general, than that which is presented in the movie "Walk the Line", and in other media. Given the source, do other editors feel that, properly documented, the late Vivian Cash's claim regarding the song bears mention in this article? Or is that "original" (albeit published) research on her part, even though she was an expert on the subject?

In the biography of Johnny Cash is explained that one night Johnny came home to Vivian, and he was a bit drunk. He told that the song actually was about June's vagina. Later on this claim was corrected: Ring of Fire was wrote by Merle Kilgore and June Carter. This claim (from Vivian) is based on a little story that Johnny told when he was drunk, and probably high too.

Halloween?[edit]

"Selena says she's dressing up as June Carter Cash." That's Selena Gomez dressing up as June Carter Cash on Halloween. Is this rather frequent for children/teens to dress up as famous dead celebrities on Halloween? –Howard the Duck 15:16, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

London Ontario Marraige Proposal[edit]

"I am from London Ontario and remember both my parrents were at the show when John proposed, however, I am too young to remember the venu. The London Arena and the London Gardens are two seperate places. Can anyone verify?" -GWPeel (talk) 22:13, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The event was real and actually took place at the London Gardens Arena. The venue eventually became the London Ice House, the home of the Junior A hockey team the London Knights. Today the building is still standing, but it is now a bicycle Velodrome. Acording to http://www.canadacool.com/COOLFACTS/ONTARIO/LondonJohnnyCashProposal.html.Tomsv 98 (talk) 19:08, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Understood. London Gardens. Was actually called Treasure Island Gardens A.K.A. The London Gardens, or just The Gardens The London Arena was on the corner of Rideout and Bathhurst St and has long since perished. -GWPeel (talk) 22:13, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Missing info[edit]

Surprisingly at no point in this article is it mentioned when June started working with Johnny Cash, the release of Jackson and their first album, etc., or her appearance in the Hurt music video which was probably her last appearance in anything. I've added this info. 68.146.52.234 (talk) 13:42, 26 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am also surprised there’s no mention that she first got married at 13! Is her birth date correct? 1939? Had her first kid at 16? Married again at 18. Cilstr (talk) 12:58, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

As the article says she was born in 1929, not 1939. Graham87 14:51, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Follow Me[edit]

Corrected this entry. It wasn't a non-album track, it was from the Johnny Cash album and soundtrack The Gospel Road. 68.146.52.234 (talk) 19:31, 12 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, cousins, distant or close, have a common ancestor?

I am so glad I read Wikipedia! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:701:C002:FD40:B191:9B27:330E:DB0E (talk) 22:31, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
