Fortaleza does not seem to be a world city at all! WhisperToMe 02:27, 27 Jun 2004 (UTC)

This article is a bit superficial and simplistic. Also, the word Fortaleza does not necessarily means “Fort” a more appropriate word for fort would be “Forte.” The word Fortaleza can mean “strength” or when referring to a structure it may also mean a stronghold or strong place. I find it funny when people try to define cities in Brazil.[edit]

People (in particular non-brazilians) seem to know only about Rio while disregarding other cities. Rio is important, no doubt, but Fortaleza is on the 50 most important cities in the world (according to any site you visit). It has a population of nearly 3 Million people, one of the most visited city in the country. Anyway, I'm not changing it back because this is not how we evolve wikipedia and also because Jorge Stolfi changed to cities which should make everyone happy.

Yikes.[edit]

It's clear that the "tourism" section was written by someone who can barely communicate in English. The tone also suggests that the author works in the tourism industry, which is not a problem of course, but a more level headed synopsis of Foraleza's attractions would be more proper for a Wikipedia entry. A rewrite is definitely in order, preferably by someone who has visited Fortaleza, Brazil and speaks English fluently.

so right, wikipedia ignores the high crime rate not one mentions as usual! puff pieces — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.163.162.160 (talk) 16:36, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hearts[edit]

I am wondering what is the goal of all those hearts♥ at the end of every paragraph...? what do they mean? Noaa 08:38, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fortaleza[edit]

It seems to me the whole article is a little "thin" and the tourisum section was probably lifted from a brochure. The language is a little stilted and does not flow -"miscigenation" for example is not a word I would expect to see ...well anywhere really.

I would suggest I complete rewrite.

I removed the rather silly hearts.

Simple mindedness[edit]

The main problem with this page is that it was written only by natives. It is not a problem in itself, but if you have not travelled abroad you can not properly grade your own home. And that is the source for sentences like "the wildest monday of the world". If your "world" is your own city, this becomes a proper sentence. English mistakes should be corrected by english native speakers (I have probably committed many mistakes here myself). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Martins346 (talkcontribs) 17:25, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

--> I totally agree with you on this. I read the article, and god some parts are just awful! The entire article is filled with non-encyclopedic material, wording, and style, like having an entire section about Fortaleza's road traffic monitoring system. (btw, I tried to rewrite that part without removing much information). I also agree about the need for reviews by English native speakers. - Pabloximenes (talk) 04/17/2008

--> "if you have not travelled abroad..." completely nonsense! So, the author cannot be a native who has travelled abroad? Total non sequitur... By the way, "the craziest/wildest monday in the world" is attributed to an article first appeared at the NY Times (written by somebody who must know a little bit about the World, I suppose) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.225.72.125 (talk) 15:07, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

--> Not only I agree, but also I beg you all: Please, readers of the world ARE NOT INTERESTED about if Ceara is in Serie A and Fortaleza is in Serie C; readers of the world ARE NOT INTERESTED that our police viatures are Hilux SW4; readers of the world ARE NOT INTERESTED in all these "celebrities" (who put them there? THEIRSELVES OF COURSE) of martial arts who use Wikipedia for self-promotion! Someone have to clean this all! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.9.49.45 (talk) 03:15, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

UFC[edit]

The reference to the Federal University of Ceara (UFC) is linking to "Ultimate Fighting Championship", which is non-sense —Preceding unsigned comment added by 143.107.228.18 (talk) 20:59, 16 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fortaleza External Link[edit]

Hi, I have added an external link to the Fortaleza page and it has been removed being judged a promotional link. However, almost all links in the Fortaleza page have promotional content (mostly concerning tourist accommodation in Fortaleza), therefore if my link should be removed than it is only fair that almost all the other links are removed as well. Otherwise my link should be allowed like the others, rules should be the same for everyone. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.36.159.13 (talk) 12:52, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Per Editor assistance request, your link was inappropriate. However there was a whole subsection of links that did not meet our guidelines for external links so I have removed the subsection. Some links were commercial, most self published, none were officially related to the subject, some were non english language (this being en:WP), none were referenced from the article text and Wikipedia is not a directory of links or a travel guide (that is what Wikitravel is for and we have a link to that). Relevant material from those links should be integrated into the article with primary, and non self published sources. If anyone thinks any of them merit inclusion they should discuss them here rather than re-add them. Mfield (talk) 18:55, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's the 4th largest city in Brazil[edit]

In my opinion, Fortaleza is the 4th largest city in Brazil by population. Brasília doesn't have a larger population than Fortaleza. What is usually taken as "the population of Brasília" is, in fact, the population of the Federal District. And I don't think that Planaltina, Sobradinho and Gama are the "same city" as Brasília. Siaraman (talk) 19:14, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is exactly what you pointed it out to be: an opinion. Thus WP:OR or your WP:POV. Regardless of what people think, Brazilian census information places the city at the fifth largest city in the country. 08OceanBeachS.D. 22:11, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the Census is wrong, because it uses wrong criteria. The "indivisibility of the Federal District" creates this distortion. Siaraman (talk) 13:08, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Security and criminality[edit]

The passage about "social problems" is a mere claim, and at least controversial, so I think it should best be deleted. Other sources claim that the north-east of Brasil and Fortaleza in particular is one of the most dangerous areas in Brasil (actually, it has the 10th highest homicide rate in the country). The whole passage seems to be rather anectodic. There seems to be organized crime, see the robbery of the Banco central: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banco_Central_burglary_at_Fortaleza. On January 3, 2012, the whole public life broke down during a strike of the police, when looting by gangs took place. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.223.106.29 (talk) 21:09, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the bank robbery not mentioned in the text, it has been described as the world's biggest bank robbery> 86.128.241.188 (talk) 21:53, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The US state department recently issued a travel advisory specific to Fortaleza and proscribed government personnel from visiting certain areas (this has since been deleted). Fortaleza is rated 7th in the world by murder rate, 2nd in Brazil after Natal. The Tourism Board of Ceará has not published statistics since 2007 ( http://www.visitfortaleza.com/travel/foreigner-tourists.html ), but tourism remains a major component because most crime is disassociated with tourist areas which receive dedicated police coverage. — Preceding unsigned comment added by FortHay (talkcontribs) 14:56, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Climate[edit]

There appears to be a typo in the climate chart. The "Mean monthly sunshine hours" for August reads "167.4", but this is not consistent with the other data. I suspect a typo for "267.4" but can't be sure. Eclecticology (talk) 05:16, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What is missing from the recently created city timeline article? Please add relevant content. Contributions welcome. Thank you. -- M2545 (talk) 15:17, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Typo?[edit]

"municipality's GDP per capita was R$17.359,53."

Should it be R$17,359?

I wonder if it was copied over from some other language and that's how they wrote the number?
