Title[edit]

History of Jews in the United States (under English rule) is an anachronistic title as there was no United States prior to the American Revolution. AndyL 02:20, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Sam, this is a disgusting comment! IZAK 03:21, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

OK, sorry, I deleted it. And I'm not an Islamist, I promise! Sam [Spade] 00:22, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

The current title Jewish history in Colonial America is problematic, too, though. "Colonial America" should include Canada, and arguably the Caribbean and even Latin America. Maybe Jewish history in the Thirteen Colonies? -- Jmabel | Talk 09:49, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)

Lead section[edit]

So far, this article has no lead section. -- Jmabel | Talk 09:45, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)

Proposal to merge the article[edit]

I propose that this article be merged into History of the Jews in the United States, as it primarily deals with the area that ended up becoming the United States. Indeed, the latter article does deal with this subject as well -- really leaving very little benefit to this article, if at all. brozen 08:03, August 18, 2005 (UTC)

  • But this is already rather long, and more likely to grow than to shrink. Why would we want to make it part of a larger, merged article? -- Jmabel | Talk
I don't see this as a matter of length, but as a matter of appropriateness of actual difference between the two articles in subject matter. Can you cite a major difference between the two articles in the actual topics they discuss? I'm having problems with that part and I don't have a problem with a long article that is very well researched and thorough (this is an encyclopedia, after all...). brozen 18:58, August 21, 2005 (UTC)
We often take coherent subjects out of a longer article to form their own articles, trying to keep each article to no more than about 32K of visible text. In this case, it seems this has already effectively happened. Why reverse it? The appropriate way to go would be to shorten up the British colonial part of History of the Jews in the United States to a section of about three paragraphs, and use {{main}} or some such to refer people to this article for detail on that period. -- Jmabel | Talk 00:09, August 22, 2005 (UTC)

I have done a major cleanup of this article for clarity. I deleted all the references to estimated population size as they all reflected 1905 estimates. Also a lot of the article does talk about post-colonial Jewish settlements, so perhaps a renaming or merging of the article should be revisited. --FeanorStar7 09:29, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

19th century[edit]

Why is most of this article about the 19th century? Presumably, Colonial America (at least in the U.S.) ended in 1776. —D. Monack talk 20:27, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just went ahead and greatly pared down this article. I encourage anyone interested to take the removed material from the edit history and move it to History of the Jews in the United States. —D. Monack talk 20:57, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Omission of a notable figure?[edit]

Am I missing something, or is there no reference to Judah Monis? He earned his doctorate at Harvard, his thesis--a grammar for teaching Hebrew--was accepted and published as the official grammar for use in the College, and he was honored by figures like Cotton Mather, who respected his scholarship. If there's a W'pedia article somewhere, it should be cross-listed, at least.23.30.181.153 (talk) 00:18, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sourcing Issues[edit]

Hardly any of this article has sources attached to declared facts or sections. How can I be sure most of this isn't made up? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.0.216.129 (talk) 02:39, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
