This article needs more detail, especially in the history section. Surely there's a local somewhere on here who can help fill this in?  :) Lokicarbis 05:03, Jan 24, 2005 (UTC)

Sport - Bradman reference[edit]

Thankyou Talsta for the new section on sport. Very good! I have one quibble...

Cootamundra has a long and proud sporting history, with the region most notably producing Sir Donald Bradman, the greatest test cricketer ever.

This doesn't read right for several reasons.

Firstly, Bradman is the great batsman ever, in cricket at any level. The introduction to his page has "widely acknowledged as the greatest batsman of all time.[3]", which would be fine here, except too wordy in the context. It goes too far to call him the greatest test cricketer ever, without citation. Arguably, Gary Sobers might get that title. A citation is needed for "greatest cricketer ever".

Secondly, Bradman's association with Cootamundra is described in detail in previous paragraphs, and it is mentioned that he was born in Cootamundra but had no association after his parents left when he was only two. It seems a stretch to lead the section on "Sport" (which is otherwise excellent!) with "the region most notably producing Sir Donald Bradman"

So, I would suggest rewording this carefully, to reflect...

1. Bradman is the greatest cricket batsman ever

2. Bradman and his association with Cootamundra are amply described previously

3. Bradman's association with Cootamundra is only that he was born there.

4. Keep it short!

So, it's right to mention Bradman in the Sport section, but needs a careful rewrite.

I hope to return to this myself, if no one else attends to it.

Plagarism[edit]

Why are huge slabs of this article plagarised out of the references, in particular George Mains book 'Heartland'??????

If people want to squib content for articles they should write it in a non plagarised format or not include it as plagarism is illegal. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.138.240.71 (talk) 19:40, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia take plagiarism and copyright violation seriously. See Wikipedia:Copyright violations and Wikipedia:Plagiarism for more information. If you can identify the plagiarised text (I am guessing it is the history section), it will be removed immediately. If we can identify the editor who added the text, that editor will be reminded of Wikipedia's obligation to treat copyright violation seriously. -- Mattinbgn (talk) 19:47, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
More information would be great, I can get a read of "Heartland: The Regeneration of Rural Place " by George Main but only for a few minutes at the local library (as it isn't on loan and must stay within the library) and so I can verify the plagiarism. A lot of the Heartland book is online at Google Books. Try page 20 of it if that is online Then check the wiki article with the book. I have an actual hardcopy of the book here next to me. George Main has referenced original documents in his book then the same phrasing that Main has used in his book appear almost or in some cases, identical to what is in the wiki article with references back to other stuff. He has referenced a map that is in possession of his family and notes the placename on it etc.

And bidgee you must not be local if you cant get a hard copy of Heartland as I got my copy from Cootamundra Library yesterday (I have had it out before) and if you are in NSW you could borrow it too but its likely easier to buy a copy. George Main seems to be a very credible author with appropriate qualificatiosn re his subject matter and I know first hand that he did do quite a bit of on the ground research as NSW NP checked back with me re him a few years back so his book was not just an exercise in cobbling together the work of others plus he did consult closely with area Aboriginal people and NSW NP who are the cultural heritage managers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.139.225.40 (talk) 01:43, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

ERrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr[edit]

Did George Main, the author of 'Heartland', contribute the article content that I queried??? If so, it likely isnt plagarised but it may not be correctly referenced also. It would not be often that a book author contributes to wiki but there is a GeorgeVM noted as contributing to the Cootamundra article in 2008? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.139.225.113 (talk) 05:00, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
