I noticed that this template was changed somewhat recently to add BNSF and CSXT. These two railways aren't Canadian class I railways; they're U.S. class I's that happen to have trackage in Canada. I'm wondering what the purpose of this template should be. Should it contain:

  1. Canadian class I railways, or
  2. All class I's with a Canadian presence?

If it's the first (my preference), then we should probably remove BNSF and CSXT. If the second, we probably need to make fairly significant updates to this template (and also add VIA to Template:US class 1.) JYolkowski 22:27, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I originally created this template with the intention of listing all class 1 railraods that are or were operating in Canada, like Template:US class 1 lists those that are or were operating in the US. I listed only CN and CP because those were the only railroads that I had documentary proof (April 1984 ORER) of their Class 1 status and that I knew operated (and still operate) within Canada. Since my original intention was to list all Class 1 railroads that operated in Canada, I would vote for the latter, but I have no strong preference for either option. slambo 12:05, Dec 15, 2004 (UTC)

I added the US ones with a Canadian presence to be consistent with Template:US class 1, which includes Canadian class 1s that operate in the US. --SPUI 12:29, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Thinking about it a bit more, if we are going to go with the second option, it might make sense to merge the templates into North American class 1. --SPUI 12:30, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I like the idea of a North American Class I template. If there are no objections, I'll create one. JYolkowski 01:34, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Haven't heard of any objections so I'll get to work on this. JYolkowski 15:24, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)
