Picture[edit]

Soooo.... are we not going to have a picture of domo from now on? Because there's no pic... aaand... that makes this article kinda empty without a visual representation of domo. I came here to see why a picture was not included and it seems someone just deleted it for no good reason? Hmmm.... Monkeytheboy (talk) 00:19, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deletionist deleted the image. Shock. Wikipedia used to be such a nice place. Zeddocument (talk) 16:46, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nickelodeon/NHK remake of Domo-kun[edit]

  • Interesting! I wonder how this will translate. I hope that the original charm of Domo-kun is retained. Gemtiger 15:03, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

linking of kun in title[edit]

I don't know Japanese, but I think kun is a diminuitive honorific. The kun disambig page it links to doesn't seem to mention that.

  • I changed the link so that it points to Japanese honorifics instead, which does have a blurb on -kun. Gemtiger 00:51, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Which image do you prefer, the old one (I08-f101.jpg) or the new one uploaded by JmBd (Image:Domo9.jpg)?

The old one does not have a very high resolution, but I think it's better for the article: it is funnier and only Domo-Kun is depicted (several times actually). In the new one you have to guess which of the two is Domo-Kun (that can be fixed in the caption of course, but I think that only Domo-Kun should be pictured for a better first glance recognition).

If the first image is to be discarded because low resolution, because it has Japanese text or for other reasons, I would propose uploading this one rather than the one that is currently present in the article (no offense to JmBd meant). Comments are welcomed. --xDCDx 01:47, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Translation of "Domo konnichiwa"[edit]

The article states currently that the phrase translates to "very much hello" in English; however, I was under the impression that it was "Thanks [for watching], hello." Can anyone confirm this?

  • "Very much hello" is a rough literal translation indeed. It effectively means a very enthusiastic hello, i.e. "HELLO!!!". —RaD Man (talk) 19:04, 7 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Bad english?[edit]

It should be noted that "-kun" is not actually part of his name, it is in fact an honourific indicating strong friendship or possibly family ties, usually to a younger person (EG a mother would say to her child (translated into english , with honourifics "intact") "Billy-kun, could you help getting the shopping in please?")

Is this improper grammar or is this style of grammar used somewhere in the world commonly? - Rudykog 17:14, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kinda late, but it's slang. "The shopping," in this case, would refer to groceries or...Well, stuff you'd get while shopping. It's a British thing, I think. Onslaught Six 08:17, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

External links[edit]

I'm about to remove the links to the profile sites, because I don't feel they're encyclopedic; nevertheless, I feel that there should be some discussion among editors of this page as to what belongs and what doesn't. I would definitely keep the NHK page and the Domo-kun FAQ, but some of the others... I'm not sure that a German fanpage really belongs in the English Wikipedia (and as I can't read German, I'm not qualified to judge its quality anyway). The Flash game, while entertaining, is already linked in the main body of the article; is it necessary to have it there twice? I'd like to hear what other editors think. - Gemtiger 22:35, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, I also don't think the myspace page belongs there.--172.193.58.117 23:59, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There should probably be some kind of reference to uncyclopedia's grue page. It's earned it. 66.31.174.231 04:45, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done and done. Lord Vipes (talk) 15:10, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's an Internet Meme thing. Everyone calls Domo a grue (and on uncyclopedia Domo is a grue) because he looks really creepy and therefore, as an insult, "is" a grue. If someone calls you a nerd, for example, you and nerd aren't the same thing. If everyone calls Domo a grue, same thing... It may be worth mentioning that Domo "is" a grue, since so many people believe it. The entire "every time you masturbate, Domo kills a kitten" thing was sparked from the "fact" that Domo is a grue. --MICHAELIPF5SUMANTalk 06:38, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure that the Domo killing kittens thing didn't originate the "fact" that Domo is a grue? June 22, 1979 (talk) 16:34, 24 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hl2[edit]

The mattresses aren't domo-kuns in any levels for HL2, someone probably jsut played that level in G-Mod

Must agree with that, it's the Garry's Mod that add Domokun matress. HL2 does not contain anything like this (I know it, I'm modding for this game). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 194.57.174.243 (talk) 08:12, 27 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Other Media[edit]

I think that several items in "Appearances in Other Media" should be removed because they are not official products. For example: "Domo-kun appears as one of the monsters in Go, Go, Parody Rangers!, an obvious parody of Power Rangers, which is featured on Newgrounds." (Llxwarbirdxll 05:04, 10 May 2007 (UTC))[reply]

The internet is still a form of media, and even though they are not official products, it is still factual information and deserves to be listed Svrsswiki 15:50, 11 May 2007 (UTC)Svrsswiki[reply]

I agree. It doesn't need to be official to be listed. -- Ablaze (talk) 19:19, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
i agree, much of the popularity of domokun is based on the viral internet use of the image, not so much because of the show. it is a major factor in its cultural significance. in fact many people only know of domo kun in its internet context.
Unless reliable sources mention specifically these viral videos, they do not exist in Wikipedia's eyes. WhisperToMe (talk) 07:13, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed that it's excluded. Same holds true for the "every time you masturbate, god kills a kitten" meme originated on 4chan with domo chasing down a tabby cat. funny as hell, and made a splash on teh netz, but unless it's notable enough to be mentioned in a published source outside of said netz, it's not encyclopedic. just funny :) Enigmatic2k3 (talk) 23:40, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

how many domo-kuns are there?[edit]

Is he the only domo-kun in the world? And is he a dude? --Howard the Duck 11:25, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On NHK programming, there's only one. When he's used for internet fads, there may be more. Sloverlord 15:55, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I always see him with that old rabbit and a pink creature, and looked like he's one-of-a-kind on TV, but on the net I saw 2 Domo-kuns chasing a kitten so I got confused. hehehe --Howard the Duck 17:31, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
To add further confusion to the matter, it appears that there ARE other Domo-kun, if only in merchandise. Recently, a series of products have been released showing others of Domo's kind, in different colors. While this may not seem too odd, they have been depicted in scenes together interacting. With no fiction or media to go along with this, though, it seems it could simply be an in-joke with the manufacturers. Can anyone else find anything on this? --65.202.127.1 (talk) 17:04, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This character seems to have appeared in many places online...--h i s s p a c e r e s e a r c h 16:07, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, A parody does reference domo as a grue however, this is just a simple joke, it it were to be put in the article it would need to go under pop culture references --Coheed56 (talk) 02:53, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And it would have to have a reliable source. Since it doesn't... WhisperToMe (talk) 03:20, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Domo[edit]

Hmm, should the article be renamed? NHK (and other official sources) use "Domo" instead of Domo-kun in English, while in Japanese "Domo-kun" is used. Also notice how Mr. Usaji and Tashanna, etc. are used by NHK's English site (instead of Usajii and Ta-chan, respectively) WhisperToMe (talk) 05:30, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I moved the page because there is no reliable source that I know of that states that "Domo-kun" is more popular than "Domo" - And I cannot find any reliable sources about the Fark thing. WhisperToMe (talk) 03:57, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Domo comic[edit]

In-depth content regarding the writer of the Domo comic story is inconsistent with the rest of the article. Focus should be on the Domo property, not the writer of an ancillary item. No Mention whatsoever about Domo in America?[edit]

A while ago (don't remember how long ago) I was on this page and learned about some American made/released (not sure which)Domo media, like this for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ACYH12OxbE and now it has no mention at all about Domo media appearing in America. And I believe that was something about something airing on Nickelodeon that was supposed to happen (and may have for all I know) and Could someone please explain how and why? My guess is nobody was able to find a suitable source to verify any of that American content actually ever existed/was broadcast, so the content was deleted. —Peco! Peco!TALK 07:07, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of Dōmo-kun's name[edit]

It is mentioned in the article that Dōmo's name is homophonous with どうも dōmo ("indeed; very much; [literally] anyhow," which is occasionally used as a sort of meaningless interjection, a casual greeting, or an abbreviated form of expressing thanks). However, I do not see it explained anywhere that the most notable pun implied in the naming of this character is its near homophony with 獰猛 dōmō "fierce, ferocious, bestial, brutal, savage, vicious, atrocious." The gap between his ferocious visage and his harmless behavior is supposed to be humorous. Ebizur (talk) 15:50, 4 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
