The history of attacks/fighting at the mosque in the 1990s and 2000s are important, but there isn't much in this article about the mosque itself. Such as: What one would find inside the mosque, what types of services normally take place there, who normally takes care of the mosque, why the mosque is considered to be more important by Shiites and not other Muslims, and more about the history between 1500 and 1991. I might write more about it, but I don't know much else other than what I've read here, and I'm sure someone else reading this will probably have more knowledge. -Lorem Ipsum

What is the stance of the Islamic community on militants taking refuge inside a mosque? Are they permitted to use mosques as military bases?

What is the stance of the Islamic community on armies attacking militants who take refuge inside mosques?

Who is the desecrator:

  1. the armed men who take refuge inside the mosque and use it as a base to attack enemies; or,
  2. those who attack the armed man inside the mosque?

I've heard that in international law, both sides to a conflict should avoid damaging holy places. But I've also heard that if soldiers from one side occupy a "holy place", then the other side is no longer bound by international law. That is, the holy place loses its protected status and becomes a legitimate target.

Over emphasis of Violence and Terrorism around the shrine during the years of the Iraq war[edit]

This article has for many years given over emphasis on acts of terror and war that occurred around the shrine during the years of the US Invasion of Iraq 2003. The majority of these events are irrelevant in the larger 400 year history of the shrine as they don't either relate to the architecture of the shrine nor did they significantly impact it in any way. This article is about the physical monument of the shrine and should therefore focus on its architecture, history, and religious significance.

I will be working to enhance the article with more information about the shrine monument's architectural history through textual information and photographs of the shrine taken by myself. At the same time, the article is in need of some restructuring, I recommend to compress the current list of events that occurred in the context of the 2003 invasion into a more succinct section only mentioning events that are significant to the shrines history. The architecture section of the article should also be bumped up, currently it sits at the end of the article despite it being the most important part of an article relating to a physical monument. I recommend to place this section after the History section and it should be expanded upon to provide more detailed history of the shrines current and previous structures.

Sacred Shrine → Imam Ali Shrine – "Imam Ali Shrine" was the original name of this article, it is the name this religious structure/ mausoleum is most commonly referred to. Several sock-puppet accounts as of recent have renamed the page several times in the past couple days to now "Sacred Shrine", this has made it impossible to find the article on the web and on wikipedia according the commonly used name of the shrine.
