When OrphanBots attack[edit]

Rye, those images deleted by Orphan Bot did in fact record their source (China Daily was one of them). I'm not going to waste my time uploading images and following all the rules correctly, only to have my work undone by either a rule change or a 'robot-editor.'

So, if you want to upload a Maria Capovilla image, be my guest.

By the way, you can recover the image by simply reverting the page to its prior version.

R Young {yakłtalk} 07:42, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When I look at the previous version of the page, that particular image is now a red-link, which I think means that the actual file has been removed. However, I don't fully understand the OrphanBot process so I am going to try and find the owner and ask if that is the case. I will also ask what was the problem with the source originally.
PS: If you use the "+" instead of "Edit this page" when working on a discussion page, it will put your comment at the end, and that makes it easier to find. -- Rye1967 00:47, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
See my followup comments on Talk:Maria Capovilla --Rye1967 01:32, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. Rye, I'm extremely irritated to find out that Orphan Bot also deleted pictures of Mitoyo Kawate, Christina Cock, etc.

First, I believe the pictures are necessary to 'humanize' these people...not just dry text.

Second, I don't believe these photos violated Wikipedia's policy at the time (hence they were up for months). In law, ex post facto states that you can't hold someone responsible for an act committed before the law was made. But OrphanBot isn't programmed just for 'new' pics. This is a complete waste of my time and my response will be not to contribute any further photos. Also, the photo upload process is very cumbersome, and with Google the #1 source of quick images, most of these photos coming from newspaper stories (where after two weeks, the paper takes the photo down and couldn't care less after that, never to use it again) and with my sourcing actually naming the source (i.e. 'China Daily'), Wikipedia is shooting itself in the foot.

If you want to upload pics for these persons, go right ahead. If you can't find the pics, I can send them to you and you can try it. → R Young {yakłtalk} 20:58, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rye,

Just checking, OrhanBot was one of the most despised 'bots' on Wikipedia, perhaps the worst with an unprecedented amount of complaints. Among the problems are that it does not differentiate between real and imagined violations; does not present a chance to discuss a case, rather rending 'guilty until proven innocent' justice; does not respect the concept of ex post facto; does not make it clear what could be done to 'correct' the 'technical' error. Can you imagine if the law courts were run by a robot that executed defendants unless they had 7 days to prove their innocence? When you carry it to its ultimate conclusion, OrphanBot is a tyrannical dictator and Carnildo has been inconsiderate at best, instead of trying to correct its deficiences Carnildo links to the complaints as examples of 'stupidity.'

The Editor's Barnstar

I, Chodorkovskiy, present Carnildo with the Editor's Barnstar for OrphanBot. It has done much to rid Wikipedia of uncopyrighted images, as well as people incapable of following its policies, as evidenced here.

In other words, Carnildo has teleologically definded 'success' as irritating others, while turning a blind ear to the reality that maybe this many complaints means there's something wrong with OrphanBot, NOT the other way around. Opposed to censorship, when he is a censor? Laughable. → R Young {yakłtalk} 21:16, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're obviously very fustrated there! - understandably, and you're not the only one. There has recently been a discussion on Wikipedia:Village pump about fair-use and the bot etc. Wiki veterans such as User:Jtdirl have expressed dissatisfaction. Perhaps it is an issue that needs to go to a higher level in the community, due to its complexity and legal issues. Anyhow, Im not getting into the debate, they are too complicated for me. I want to spend my time wrapping up the debates that I am in. I will attempt to upload the Maria image again. --Rye1967 22:37, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Would you like to upload a Maria Capovilla image? No one else has. I note OrphanBot has had a chilling effect...everywhere I go, from images of Guayaquil, Ecuador to Atlanta, random images removed. Ironic since in not one of these cases was it remotely likely that Wikipedia would have been sued for using the image. In the long run, Wikipedia has hurt itself. Many I know have declined to continue participating, including Mr. Epstein. → R Young {yakłtalk} 07:26, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I spent a lot of time googling images of Maria Capovilla and reading the WP image copyright guidelines and I cannot find an image which is valid to upload. The images I found on Google with source information are:
 • blue dress/holding photo - Reuters/Alberto Franco,
 • blue dress/holding fan - Scanpix/Reuters
 • seated on elaborate sofa,w/wout family, with fan - EFE,
 • reading newspaper - AP
 • sideways on small sofa holding photo - Victor Proanio/AP
 • drinking - AFP
According to WP fair-use image guidelines, standard press-agency photos are not fair use --Rye1967 19:22, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You got questions, I got answers[edit]

1. To delete a category, you can go to Wikipedia:Categories for deletion.

2. To get credit for anonymous contributions, you can go to a page and get them assigned. Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact title, but I've cross posted your question to Wikipedia:Help desk; you should receive an answer there.

Hope this helps, and keep contributing!

Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa[edit]

I do apologize. The set up on the reattribution page is such that I messed up my own original request a week or two ago and went back to fix it, only to mess someone else up. Very sorry. Hi. The Air Corps' history page (here) says MATS was set up in the mid-70s, so I assume they'd first have needed to shift ministers long distance in the first Presidency ('78?). Regards, -- Arwel 22:52, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Pope JPII and Censorship[edit]

I would consider "actively assisting" as involving activity that assists when the perpetrator knew or should have known what was going on. For example when the French authorities sent Jews east for what was officially called "resettlement" they were actively assisting in the Holocaust, equally the Catholic Church actively assisted in the Inquisition tho' officially when handing over people to be burned they said they should be well treated. I have put a link on the page giving details. When, knowing Tudjman was publically committed to genocide, the point of the quote, they gave $2billion, "not to be used to buy weapons" they clearly knew it would be used directly or indirectly to help Tudjman's genocidal programme. After Tudjman's death the ICTY said he was a war criminal whom they just hadn't got round to indicting.

As regards the lack of coverage in our media - I am afraid I am much more cynical than you - partly because I know the difference between the lies the media have told us about these wars & the truth which the net now allows us to dig for (tho' there is rather more active censorship on some pages here than I am comfortable with). Wikimedia UK/Wikimania 2006[edit]

Hi, this is a circular to Wikipedians in Ireland to draw your attention to Wikimedia UK, where the establishment of a local Wikimedia chapter for the United Kingdom (and possibly for the Republic of Ireland) is being discussed. See the talk page, as well as the mailing list; a meetup will take place to discuss matters in London in September, for anyone who can get there. On another topic, plans are being drawn up for a UK bid for Wikimania 2006, which would be conveniently close to Ireland. On the other hand, Dublin's bid was one of the final three last year - might we bid again? --Kwekubo 19:33, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No prob. Now, when I restored it I made a number of attempts to make it as small as it was before but I don't know enough about image sizing. It would look better if it was smaller, I think - Rye1967 01:51, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've changed the image size - check the diff ([1]) to see how I did it. Basically, use "thumb" instead of "frame" (or just omit "frame" if you don't want the thumbnail look) as one of the arguments in the Image: link, and then set AAApx (where AAA is the width you want). I've set it at 150, feel free to change the size to whatever you think looks best (good practice, if nothing else!). Hope this helps. -- Jonel | Speak 01:56, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Linking to images on foreign wikipedias?[edit]

Hi. There is no way to link directly to an image on the Czech Wikipedia. However, this problem is addressed through the Wikimedia Commons. Images uploaded there can be linked to like a normal image from any Wikipedia/Wikimedia project. This gives an easy access of a lot of images for all projects. The only thing to pay attention to is: Only free images are allowed, the copyright must include permission for derivatives and commercial work. Fair use images are not allowed. Since the Image:Jirí Paroubek z MZV.jpg is free, i added it to the commons and linked it on the article. While doing that i also found a pronounciation sound file on the commons, which I also linked. Hope this helps. Happy editing -- Chris 73 | Talk 07:55, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Irish constituency names[edit]

Hi Rye1867, sorry for being slow to stop my AWB run of renaming, and for my disagreacefully slow reply to your messages. I didn't intend to be rude, it's just that when I started drafting a response to the disccussion, it kept on growing bit it's now done and posted at Category talk:Parliamentary constituencies in the Republic of Ireland#The_case_for_a_consistent_naming_format. I know that you have done a hige amount of work in this area, so I'd be very grateful if you could take a look a what I have written and see if I can persuade you to chnage your mind! --BrownHairedGirl 13:54, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, I am looking fwd to your response, and will read it now to see if I can change my mind. PS:Rye1867? --Rye1967 17:54, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your thoughtful replies there. I have added a few small comments for now, but want to hold fire until I see what others say. From the replies so far, I think that there may be several different possibilities for a consensus — fingers crossed! --BrownHairedGirl 19:40, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Delighted to see your additions to this article — I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one who thought that some of this stuff was worth listing. Well done with the changes to the opening sentence: I had been racking my brains for some neutral way of describing a phenomenon which I personally dislike, but which some TDs seem to list prominently on their websites. I suspect that if the list is ever completed, it'll be a very long one! --BrownHairedGirl 17:57, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I had been thinking of the need for that article for some time, I was going to call it Irish Dynasties. Compared to the UK it is a peculiar situation but I cannot think of an easy statistical way of illustrating that. If the same carry-on went on in the UK we would have Carol Thatcher and James Major in parliament! (However it is a cousin of the inherited titles system) Overall, it gives us some effective TDs who might not otherwise have considered politics and some that we would be better off without. I guess it is related to the 'inherit the land', 'inherit the business', theory, with a dose of Civil War hang-over. It may dwindle as more candidates of conviction displace a family candiate and as urbanisation spreads.
I think you are right that it has given us both good and bad TDs, just as any other hereditary system does. Mind you, the idea of Carol Thatcher in parliament is not too depressing: she has come across recently as a very capable woman!
As to illustrating the statistics, I had thought that once all the TDs and Senators snce 1918 were in place, I could do a tally, and stick a note in to the effect that "This list identifies 123 members of the Oireachtas who had a family member there, out of 1234 since the First Dáil sat in l918".
BTW, have just created Irish political dynasties as a redirect to Families in the Oireachtas. --BrownHairedGirl 19:53, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the only remaining image on this page has been marked by your bot as having no source information. However, I cannot find any instructions on how to add the source information, does it need to be uploaded again? I have never uploaded an image myself, so I am not familiar.

Also, I have read the links from your FAQ, and it took me to Help:Image page. That refers to the image description page, but does not say what that is. Also, I think an example link to a correctly defined image would help. I found the myriad of instructions to require careful reading, which I don't have the time for right now, but an example would help me understand more quickly. --Rye1967 01:19, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Click on the image. That will take you to the image description page. Clicking on "edit this page" will let you change the page's contents, just like you would with any other Wikipedia page.
An image description page for an image from a website needs, at a bare minimum, to have a link to the page containing the image. It should also have a brief description of the image. Image:Louis gossett jr.jpg is an example of this. --Carnildo 01:49, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, that is what I needed. I appreciate that you are attempting the difficult job of cleaning up images on Wikipedia. --Rye1967 01:14, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As I wrote in my recent posting, Until the mid-1990s it was policy not to issue stamps showing living persons, but this policy has been put aside and there have been several issues showing living person. For the Millennium, 30 stamps were issued showing living Irish sports-people. So that is where some of these more obscure people have come from. I have studied Irish philately for many years so if you need to know something in that area please ask. ww2censor 02:36, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Good suggestion on the seperate col for state and office. It means slightly less work for me in converting the data into the page. I've taken the dates of office from the individual WP bio pages/List of leader pages, so if you are sure of the date changes that you have made, could you update the relevant bio pages also? Also, take a look at the entry in the list for Denis_Sassou-Nguesso Republic of the Congo, there seems to be a conflict in your chanages between 1996 and 1997.--Rye1967 21:14, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi too. I know an excellent site about the subjetct. It's Rulers.org. About Sassou-Nguesso, it's difficult to say the real beginning of his rule because he returned to power after a coup d'état and a short civil war.
There can be a presentation problem about rulers who changed offices or who stepped down only for a short time. I think it's better to show the date of the first appointement when there is a small interruption between two terms... but what can we call small ?... A good exemple is Guyana Prime Minister Sam Hind. The constitution says in case of vacancy of the presidency, the Prime Minister becomes President. So Sam Hind stepped down twice as Prime Minister only to let the ruling party to appoint a new Prime Minister who became immediately President, and Sam Hind became president again. The same applies to Artur Rasizadə in Azerbaijan. But how to decide if an interruption is short enough?

Seige of Smerwick[edit]

Hi, Rye. There's a fairly good account here. I'd still prefer to have a separate article, but I don't have a detailed account of the action. Couldn't find your talk page contribs. Thanks.--Shtove 12:07, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, found your talk contribs. Are you and Jdorney squaring up? He and I have collaborated a fair bit to fill out the list of Irish battles for this period. Bear in mind he's the one who pioneered this area on WP, and an excellent job he made of it. Putting in the details is easy compared to writing balanced overview articles. I like the concept of the Second Desmond Rebellion, and your synthesis raises good questions. But co-operation is better than undiscussed deletion.--Shtove 21:18, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yep - there is no castle at Smerwick: it's an earthwork fort (fenced off from the rained-upon public). I've no knowledge of a 1581 action, so that delete is spot on. I'm sure Jdorney will weigh in here, but I guess the deletion of a section of Desmond Rebellions to replace it with a link to a synthesised article, and to do it without discussion, is what caused the problem. Anyway, Siege of Smerwick has to be done, and there's plenty of material for it. One thing I've found out recently is that the Spanish used the massacre as a precedent for their 1583 massacre in the Azores: basically, Smerwick was when the gloves came off in the Atlantic war.--Shtove 21:51, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Desmond etc[edit]

First of all, an apology, the unexplained revert was uncalled for and unnecessarily provocative.

The problem I have with it is that is a fairly short pragraph anyway and I feel that the article reads much better if it was left in its original form. There is plenty of scope for a full length article to complement it without cutting the original I feel. With your blessing, I'd like to change it back again.

Re the answers to the question on the 2nd Rebellion. The short answer is that off the top of my head I don't know the answers and would have to look up books etc. I'll get back to you about it.

Jdorney 19:26, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I don't necessarily agree that some of these points are minor issues, for instance;

Fitzm making the argument that Elziabeth was a heretic. ::That the exact support of the Pope/Philip II was indulgence, troops, treasure, taking Ireland as a posesession

In the 16th century world, this was an extremely important issue. In contemporary thought, Fitzmaurice owed allegiance to his sovereign, Elizabeth I and rebellion against her was a crime against God (since monarchs were chosen by God). In the first rebellion, Fitzmaurice rebelled against the Queen's "wicked ministers" a common way of getting out of this problem when you really didn't like what the government was doing. In the second rebellion, he aimed not just at changing a particular policy, but changing the sovereign. One of the only way he could be justified in this was if the queen was a herretic and was not upholding the true religion. This meant that all Catholics had a duty to oppose her. That is the reason why the Papal indulgence and Phillip II's support was so important, aside completely from its military significance.

That John of Desmond had a large following among his kinsmen

This is another important point. Fiztmaurice was a landless man, who hadn't been in the country from several years. Not many of the Gerladines would follow him. The Desmond soldiers considered the Earl weak and he didn't have a big personal following either. John, however was considered the main "strong man" of the Geralidines andthe rebellion only took off when he joined it. To illustrate the point, the Earl had only 60 men at the start of the rebellion, John had around 3000. This is the point I was trying top make with this sentence.

That the Earl actuallly joined when he was considred a traitor

Another important point. The Earl didn't really want to join the rebellion and in fact originally tried to raise forces against Fitzamurice's invasion, but the English would not believe that he was not involved and proclaimed him as a traitor. This meant that he was placed outside the law, could be killed on sight and would be executed when captured. This gave him no choice, he had to join the rebellion. If he had not, the aftermath of the rebblion -ie the Munster Plantation and the destruction of the Geraldine dynasty, would have looked very different.

The name of the temporary king of Ireland
That the price for the Earls slaying was 1000 in silver and that the head was displayed in cork

Ok, these are not key facts, but naming of alternative kings is again significant from the point of view of the seriousness of the rebellion - it was intended to change the government, not just to change its policies. Likewise, the 1000 pounds is an enourmous ammount of money for the time and place -showing the importance tht th English attached to catching Desmond. The head, similarly was a sign of disrespect to a traitor. The fact that one if th most important earls in the country was treated in this way is of major symbolic importance.

If those facts were to be in the summary then there were other 'minor' facts of equal importance that should also be included (eg that he captured some English ships en-route, that the Earl of Ormonde joined the English forces etc),

I wasn't aware of the English ships to be honest. I thought the paragraph mentioned Ormonde already?

More importantly, there were inaccuracies in that summary eg that the invasion landed at Dingle, that 600 re-inforcments arrived at Smerwick after CarriagaFoyle, that Grey-De Wilton arrived before Carraigafoyle

Smerwick is near Dingle, but I take the point. However, on the other point, the Papal troops, about 6-700 strong, landed at Smerwick on September 10 1580. Carrigafoyle fell at Easter time (April-May 1580). Grey was made Lord Deputy in 1580 at some point, but I can't find out when exactly at the moment. He was LD by the time of the battle of Glenmalure in August however.

Some other minor changes such as saying 'The O'Moriarty clan' rather than clan O'Moriarty, it referred to Smerwick castle instead of Smerwick fort

Ok. _____ I'm first going to re-do the paragraph in the overall article a bit, then I'll work on the Second Rebellion article. Jdorney 10:37, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Two landings[edit]

To be clear, there were two seperate landings at Smerwick. First, Fitzmurice in July 18 1579. Second, the Papal troops on September 10 1580.

Fitzmaurice originally was supposed to lead around 1000 Italian troops, paid for by Pope Gregory, along with Thomas Stukeley. However, most of them ended up fighting for the King of Portugal instead. Stukeley was killed in this campaign. So Fitzmaurice had to go about collecting another, smaller, force which sailed from Corruna to Ireland in July 1579. The initially established themselves at Dun an Oir, but Fitzmaurice then set out into Connacht and got killed in cattle raid on August 18.

Pope Gregory sent the other force (about 600 strong) in September 1580, again mostly Italians and commanded by a mercenary captain, Bastiano di San Giuseppi. They were prevented from linking up with John Fitzgerald's forces by Grey and Ormonde and got stuck in Dun an Oir. William Winter brought up heavy guns by sea in early November. There were two days bombardment and then the surrender and massacre.

Re the general point, yes I agree that the detail should be in the main article. My concern is that someone approaching the subject for the first time will need to read the overview article in order to understand the story and that it must contain enough information for them to get the whole picture before they can go to the main detailed article.

Second Desmond Rebellion[edit]

Hi, I've re-written this article quite a bit and I welcome your continued imput into it. However, there are still things that need to be clarified and cleared up. Btw, I removed references to Fitzmaurice waiting for Stukley. Fitzmaurice knew that Stukley was dead for almost a year before the July 1579 expedition got underway.

Re the clarifications;

First, what is the source for this?

"With the English adventurer Captain Thomas Stukley, Fitzmaurice planned an expedition which was to make Giacomo Buoncompagno, the illegitimate son of Pope Gregory, King of Ireland. This was supported by the English Catholics."

I know Popes did sometimes have children at the time, but making an illegitimate son, let alone the son of a supposedly celibate cleric, King of anywhere would have been outragous by contemporary European standards. Secondly, would English Catholics have supported a seperate King for Ireland? It seems unlikely. Anyway I can't find a mention for this in my sources.

Second, what happened at Naas exactly and when? I can't find mention of the killing of 200 Spaniards there. Not saying the info is wrong, but I would like to see more details and the origin of the information.

Third, I feel that this is a bit unclear;

"Sir Henry Sidney, the former Lord Deputy of Ireland influenced the response from his membership of the Privy council and in August 1580 a new Lord Deputy, Arthur Grey, 14th Baron Grey de Wilton was sent from England with 6000 troops".

Does this mean that Sidney lobbied to have Grey sent to Ireland and influenced the number of troops sent?

Cheers, Jdorney 22:22, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. I was unable to find verification of the Naas massacre, apart from the Kildare article, so after leaving it for some months, I deleted it. If you are able to find soem more info on this then by all means reinstate it. However, I don't feel we should leave contested facts in the article fro long periods of time. Hello. I'd like to ask your opinion on two matters regarding this template:
1. The link for "Blue Coat School" goes to a generic page; should the template link to and be included in a more specific one?
2. The template makes reference to 1600s, and early 1700s. I'm inclined to believe these should read 17th century and early 18th century (1600s referring only to the first decade of that century, etc), but perhaps you could confirm. Thank you for your input. Hi. For the time being, I have reverted your change to a sortable Wiki table - if you look here and here, you will see why. For instance, 50000 members is stacked above 1000000 members - that's not right, and that is the reason why the sortable table was removed before, observing consensus. If you can install a table where numbers sort correctly, please edit the page accordingly. Any questions, please post to the article talk page. Thanks. Thanks for your gracious reply on the talk page for the article. If there is ever any way it can be achieved correctly in the future, please feel free to re-edit, as you are right about the pros of sortable tables; unfortunately the numerical glitch makes the table a little ridiculous - you'll agree it's not a correct sort. Thanks also for your time on this. Best wishes. Refsworldlee(chew-fat)(eds) 13:54, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No-one in wikipedia does (but this user considered it and drew fire). Why are you wondering? I presume you are bothered by some specific contribs but if you think if I have a negative agenda, I don't. Kenmare[edit]

Physically exists, but is not notable enough to be encyclopaedic. In Western Australia we have a lot of rural localities (hundreds, possibly over 1000) between towns that nobody but the shire council and Australia Post actually know anything about, with populations edging on 20, no notable features and probably unencyclopaedic from a Wiki point of view. The only reason they even have a name is that someone drew a line on a map at some point in history. Many of the residents of these areas don't know they're in them, and refer to themselves as living at the nearest town (which would probably be Woodanilling in Kenmare's case). Distance between towns - 50km (30mi) is considered "down the road" once you leave Perth-Mandurah metro area. The odd such locality does get an article (see Congelin or Wilbinga) but they have a considerably higher bar than normal towns for inclusion. Note the List of postcodes article only narrowly survived deletion less than a month ago and is still under review. Orderinchaos 12:55, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jailed TDs category[edit]

Hi there, I see you created a Jailed TDs category. I have some concerns about this. Firstly, some one else added Irish Criminals as a parent category, I have since removed it. Secondly, the reason all these people were imprisoned varies wildly, e.g. De Valera, Collins jailed while fighting for Irish freedom; Tony Gregory taking a principled stand on an issue but did not commit a crime himself; Burke and Lawlor were actual criminals jailed for wrongdoing.

Maybe some sub categories would be a solution, because at the moment you have people who fought and died for Ireland in the same category as common criminal scum! Snappy (talk) 08:21, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Yeah, I was thinking about that very issue as I added content to the category, seeing a distinction between the guys who were jailed during the time of Indpendence, and Lawlor/Burke. However, a definition of "political crimes" would invite varying interpretations. I was thinking of a date-breakdown between those jailed at Independence, and those jailed later, but should that be Dec 6, 1922? . The only factual breakdown that I could think of was "Members of the 1st Dail who were jailed but then some jailed at that time were not members of the 1st Dail eg Gerald Boland or there are those who were jailed more than once eg Cathal Ó Murchadha. The other way would be to replace the category with a list. What do you think? --Rye1967 (talk) 12:48, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, KernelSaunters has added Prisoners and detainees in...' as a parent category which is better than Irish criminals but factually incorrect as De Valera was jailed before the Republic of Ireland (as well as before the Irish Free State) but thats a different debate. The sub cats are a bit tricky, for the earlier ones, it could those jailed for fighting in 1916 and/or the War of Independence. Snappy (talk) 04:16, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Would you mind giving input on my last two postings?

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

Proposed deletion of Marín Commission[edit]

The article Marín Commission has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

WP:N There was no Marín Commission because the Santer Commission resignation could not be accepted by regulations. [2]. The Santer Commission was in office until the start of the Prodi Commission. The resignation of Santer was because he was elected in the EU Parlement. Marín was not appointed as president but fulfilled the role of acting-president of the Santer Commission (not a Marín Commission) because he was the first vice-president in the Santer Commission. 3

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. The article Phil Mattingly has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted after seven days unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. A tag has been placed on Phil Mattingly requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://allfamous.org/people/phil-mattingly-19851216.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
