Dino[edit]

final (11/0/1) ending 19:03 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Submitted countless, usually fair edits and articles. Try to be neutral.

I guess I'm supposed to nominate myself for adminship. Been contributing things of varying quality for over a year and half. Not sure what I'll do with it. It helps that I'm at the place of my wife's family in Wisonsin and have been drinking Jack Daniels. Otherwise I wouldn't have the courage to submit such a request.

  10. The nomination blurb above is a little sketchy, but seems to be a strong contributor. Support column has several heavy hitters. Andre (talk) 15:28, Dec 1, 2004 (UTC)

  1. The phrase "I don't know what I would do with it" does not seem to me to indicate the level of commitment and understanding that I feel is necessary to understand exactly into what you're getting here. -- Grunt 🇪🇺 15:47, 2004 Nov 29 (UTC)

* I would be willing to support if I can find out something about this user. I'll wait until the questions below are answered. [[User:MacGyverMagic|Mgm|(talk)]] 19:48, Nov 26, 2004 (UTC)

  • As hinted at below, it might be worthwhile to review this editor's actions and comments in the Edgar Cayce article and talk histories before confirming the vote. --Gary D 09:01, Dec 2, 2004 (UTC)
    • Yes... ? I have reviewed them, they look temperate and reasonable to me. A very solid contributor. As always, extra points for the self-nomination!--[[User:Bishonen|Bishonen (talk)]] 13:17, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Questions for the candidate
A few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? (Please read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.)
A.

Sorry for the time delay in submitting this stuff. I was getting from Racine, Wisconsin back to Boulder, Colorado.

I have written to Wikipedia and long time & read the FAQs. As an intro sysop, I'll probably be conservative for a good while to get a feel for things, and ask questions when unsure. I agree with the wisdom on Wikipedia:Administrators, "This should be no big deal." I simply have been contributing for over a year and a half, so decided to go for it. What I'll help with? Probably wherever I'm useful.

I have seen a few examples of copyright violation, or of images of dubious provenance such as the one under Mickey Spillane, and it annoys me. Paints a bad image of Wikipedia. I would "flag" such when dubious, delete when obvious, and try to fix things like broken links. I doubt if I would block IPs for anyone not truly offensive. It wasn't so long ago I was a new user, and when I catch such, I'd try to steer them the right way, giving praise for good submissions.

2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A.

OK, here's a few, in descending chronological order:

  • Victory disease Sigh ... the fundamental human condition.
  • Willamette Meteorite I liked writing it, and no one had touched it before. My native state of Oregon
  • Cockaigne Human fantasies that never end.
  • The Vanishing Hitchhiker: Same as Cockaigne: Human fantasies
  • Great Sand Dunes National Monument and Preserve: What I like about this one is not so much me, but what others have added, taking a small article I wrote and greatly expanding it. It's part of my adopted state of Colorado & a place I once was.
  • Theodore Parker A controversial & interesting person.
  • Gehenna Religion. Loads of fun to write, and a lot of information cobbled together I did not find elsewhere. Again, others gave much help -- I'm not Jewish, and someone else provided the Hebrew-language info.
  • Tin pest Fun to write, interesting.
  • Cyanide process I live in the American West, and this is a controversial mining technique. America's biggest cyanide spill was in Colorado.
  • Sullivan Act Highly controversial USA gun control measure, but I felt I was npov.
  • Norse Saga Well it made the front page one day! I have read a few & love the style. Again, I cobbled together info from many sources that I could not find in one place, and again, others fixed my mistakes and improved the article.
  • Campbell-Hausdorff formula Mathematics, my main field.
  • Revolution_of_1848 Another of my early articles. It took a lot of time, writing, reading & research. Others have contrtibuted much here as well.
  • Battle_of_Vicksburg One of my early articles, and a lot of writing and research in several references.

I wasn't the original author of Western movie, but felt proud of a few additions I made; a few of my words were on the front page when this was a featured article. I wasn't the original author of Gettysburg Address, but added a lot of detail and cleared up a few fuzzy points.

I have written other things I truly liked or felt proud of, but am not here writing a novel.

3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and will deal with it in the future?
A.

The closest was probably over Edgar Cayce. A probable New Ager simply deleted some skepticism I put in. I replaced it with a strong note. I vaguely recall getting in a tiff with another New Ager at one point, and would today handle it better. Oh, no strong words. Just annoyance. Yes, I'm a skeptic. But I try to let the other side have it's say -- just don't pollute the skeptical side
