As far as I know, fa'afafine are not necessarily homosexual. I thought fa'afafine was more a term describing gender than sexual orientation. To me it doesn't fall into the same category as lesbian, etc. Either it's misplaced to include fa'afafine in this article, or the description of what UniQ encompasses needs a bit of refining. Or, UniQ is confusing gender with sexual orientation. Any thoughts? Mona-Lynn 00:40, 9 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This article is about UniQ, being the Queer Students Organisation at New Zealand universities. Queer is an umbrella term, much like GLBT - a more recent and readily acceptable term - but UniQ really emphasizes that it exists to represent students that are not heterosexual. Fa'afafine are not homosexual by definition, although some may view themselves subjectively as such. The same applies to transexuals who may or may not be homosexual, depending on how they view themselves and their sexuality. Some might see themselves as heterosexual, yet still transexual, and thus Queer or GLBT and members of the community for whom UniQ is a representative body at university. I will look over the article and make changes are required. It's important to remember though that being 'queer' doesn't equate always to 'homosexual', this is a common but forgiveable misconception.
