Inclusion on this page[edit]

This page has, besides universities, a random selection of other institutions such as HE colleges and FE colleges. The list of universities also includes equally random selection of institutes inside universities. I suggest rationalising this as follows:

  • Universities
    • Colleges of the University of London
  • University Colleges
  • Other educational institutions with degree awarding powers, possibly with foundation degree only institutions as a separate section or subsection, as on the Recognised Bodies list.[1]

This gives an easily verifiable list with clear categories and criteria. Foreign universities in the UK and universities in British territories could also be retained, but should be placed below the UK institutions.

What are people's opinions? Robminchin (talk) 01:52, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, there needs to be a better structure. Or even split the FE/HE colleges to a separate page. They are not typical "universities" Aloneinthewild (talk) 11:21, 24 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Seemed like a good idea, so I've gone ahead and done it. I've kept colleges with degree awarding powers, as under some definitions these could be considered universities, but colleges that simply offered HE courses didn't belong here so have been split into a separate page.Robminchin (talk) 17:15, 24 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Agree that those with university powers could be called "university (colleges". I'm swayed towards removing anything that is a redlink in that newly split list. What do you think? Aloneinthewild (talk) 19:58, 24 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds reasonable. The list is incomplete (as a list of "listed bodies"), and expanding it to include all listed bodies would make it a long list full of redlinks, so pruning it to only those institutions that have been shown to be notable by having an article makes sense. University of London Act 2018[edit]

The University of London Act 2018 redefines colleges of the University of London as member institutions, and (significantly for this page) allows them to begin universities (or university colleges) in their own right while remaining part of the University of London. This raises the question of how to show this on the page. Possible options I see are:

  • Keep the formatting of the list as currently and use a symbol (e.g. †) to indicate which member institutions are universities in their own right
  • Move the University of London colleges to their own section (possibly under "other recognised bodies" as institutions permitted to award University of London degrees) and list those that have university status under "universities" (and possibly those that are recognised bodies in their own right on the general "other recognised bodies" list for consistency)
  • Ignore the membership of the University of London and simply list them under "universities" or "other recognised bodies" as appropriate
  • Keep the formatting as currently but also as them to the other lists as appropriate

There are probably other variations I didn't think of. My favoured option would be the second, which follows the recognised bodies orders, but I'd like to hear other opinions. Robminchin (talk) 06:50, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I like the section as it now is, except for the sentence, "Member institutions that are also universities in their own right are listed both here and in the list of universities above," since this apparently doesn't apply to any of the institutions listed. Is the sentence there in preparation for one or more of them becoming universities and being added to the top list but they haven't yet, or is it incorrectly stated and Robminchin's third option above was chosen instead? Personally I've lost track of which London colleges have university status or independent degree-awarding powers, and which are or aren't UoL colleges. As far as I know, at the moment there are still twelve applications for university status made in 2019 that are awaiting decisions – none of the member institutions yet have university status. I have to admit I didn't expect it to take quite this long for what most be some of the easiest decisions on university status ever! Robminchin (talk) 21:08, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah ok, so the story is that while there currently still aren't, there will presumably soon be some number of institutions that are both members/colleges of the U of London but also have university status in their own right, and when that is the case they will be listed in both the main list and the London colleges list? Arms[edit]

Most of the entries in the table have an image of their arms. But some have just dashes: is this because they have no arms or because the image cannot be shown under fair use? I see that University of the Highlands and Islands has an image even though it's only available under fair use. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 16:52, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think these have been added recently. Any which are fair use shouldn't be included here per WP:NFLISTS and should be removed if they have been included. Robminchin (talk) 02:06, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
