I think the leet article is more comprehensive. Redirecting there. --Ardonik 22:48, Jul 16, 2004 (UTC)

  • Looked through the edit history and saw that someone redirected this to pornography in the past. Hopefully, the community will like this redirect better. --Ardonik 22:52, Jul 16, 2004 (UTC)

humorous side[edit]

although pr0n or pron can directly just refer to pornography when used as such a bit more humorous angle is often taken

This makes no sense![edit]

"This deliberately inaccurate spelling/pronunciation for "porn" is sometimes used...to prevent search engines from associating them with pornography - which might result in unwelcome traffic"

Unwelcome traffic? What would you achieve through searching for "pr0n" which couldn't also be achieved through searching "porn" due to unwelcome traffic?

What they meant is if someone had a directory/file called porn, they would call it pr0n to stop people grepping 'porn' and revealing the stash. If you were at university, for example, and the place where you stashed your jazz was somehow public (or subsequently made public), then it's very possible a search engine would crawl over it and start doling out the URL to its userbase. You'd then get the network admin noticing an increase in bandwidth usage and he'd investigate, make a sly copy for himself no doubt, and subsequently drop a dead otter on your head from atop the clock-tower for serving up porn to the masses despite the fact it's possible it was largely his incompetance that allowed it to happen in the first place.
