"Waitomo" and "Waitomo, New Zealand" had so much in common... AND should have been (in line with other Waikato districts) called "Waitomo (district), New Zealand". So it made sense to merge them, especially as this was an orphan sub-stub. Grutness 19 November 2004.

Infobox subdivisions[edit]

Waitomo is in the Waikato region. Wikipedia uses the local government Regions of New Zealand in the infoboxes of articles to explain where geographical features are. @Heligenix: considers this offensive, and wants to list King Country instead. King Country is not a government body. There's been some discussion at User talk:Heligenix which has not resulted in any agreement. My attempted compromises of calling the region Waikato Region (a redirect), or including King Country in the text rather than the infobox have been reverted by a different editor.

A closely-related issue has been resolved at Waitomo Glowworm Caves, where Heligenix found a reference, and the content is within the text as there's no infobox in that article. I welcome feedback on how to proceed.-gadfium 06:08, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Waitomo is NOT in the Waikato region. It is offensive because it is wrong. It is like calling all New Zealanders are from Australia.
Our local local government body is the Waitomo District Council and the Otorohanga District and according to the Major of Waitomo John Robertson and councilors. They are independent from the Waikato District Council.

Even the New Zealand Government States that we are King County/Taranaki. The current MP for the general election is Barbara Kuriger. A different area from Waikato. One of Waikato's Ministers is Hon Nanaia Mahuta The last 3 sites are are GOVT sites. So does The area has nothing to do with Waikato at all. I have attached links to prove you argument

"King Country" in the first sentence is a good change - thank you Heligenix. In the infobox we stick to local government authorities, and that's Waitomo District and Waikato Region. Heligenix touches on some valid points about the Waikato, particularly at User talk:Heligenix. There is a longstanding issue with Wikipedia's use of the name "Waikato", in my opinion, and I have touched on it several times over the years at Talk:Waikato. I opposed the move of the "Waikato Region" article to "Waikato" in 2014 and my comments in that discussion still stand. Te Ara: The Encyclopedia of New Zealand supports Heligenix and I in that it excludes the King Country from the "Waikato region" (with a small 'r', in contrast to the Waikato Region with a capital R) at https://teara.govt.nz/en/waikato-region/page-1. Waikato is correct. I do agree with Nurg that a prominent mention of King Country is warranted. It is not outdated as suggested at the noticeboard, but a pretty current and proud region (very few here consider themselves part of Waikato as demonstrated by Heligenix). As an aside using the electorates as a source is not great as the often change (Taranaki/King Country includes a lot of South Waikato and has been steadily expanding north for a while.
