Where is the "Births" subtitle? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.116.173.75 (talk) 14:50, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Plz don't delete events. Somebody deleted

2002 - Iran bans advertising of US products. An Iranian, believing a sorcerer had made him invisible, attempts to rob a Tehran bank

The first one is clearly an important event. The second one may not be too important but its damn interesting.

Well, I've removed the second one because the heading is "Major events", and I don't think it is "major" - it only really affects the Iranian themselves, maybe the bank, and possibly the sorceror. Even if the heading was just "events", I don't think it's a good idea to just list everything that happens on any particular day, the pages would get very unwieldy. I'm keeping the advertising ban in though, it seems a reasonable thing to mention here to me. However, are we sure we've got the right day? - Reuter's [1] say it was announced on state TV on Wednesday, while Newsday.com [2] say it was announced on Thursday. Of course it might have been announced a day before coming into effect, but it'd be nice to see a clearer source if you have one, Lir. --Camembert

yah, this was on wednesday. How about we add

Interesting but unimportant events

HOLD ON...what the hell-these news people sux-the problem here is one of time zones...I think it happaned on thursday our time but wednesday iranian time-but im not sure...

The convention is to list items based on the time it was where the event happened. --mav 18:31, 7 Nov 2003 (UTC)

1848 - U.S. presidential election, 1848: Zachary Taylor is elected president in the US presidential election held in every state on the same day.

Is there some significance to the US presidential election being held in every state on the same day that justifies mentioning that here? Every state's gonna have a Presidential election on November 2, 2004, too. It doesn't say Reagan was elected from 51 jurisdictions, even though he was. If Taylor was the first president to be so elected (as Nixon was the first to be elected from 51 jurisdictions, although the 'pedia doesn't mention that either), it should say so; otherwise, get rid of the thing.

He was the first. And any time a new president or other head of state is elected we should report that. --mav 18:30, 7 Nov 2003 (UTC)
I came off as hostiler than I intended; of course heads of state newly taking office are events. I was just a little puzzled that someone had said it was the first simultaneous election and then someone had apparently deleted "first" without altering the rest of the entry, making the simultaneous election part, which is "the thing" I meant, utterly uninformative.
I still don't think we should add to the Nixon entry that it was the first Presidential election in 51 jurisdictions :) --Calieber 18:42, Nov 7, 2003 (UTC)

Interesting but Unimportant Events[edit]

Trivial local news. --mav 08:49, 8 Nov 2003 (UTC)

It was labeled as trivial. That's what "unimportant" means. --Charles L. 17:50, Nov 10, 2003 (UTC)
Duh. ;) And its triviality was why it was removed. --mav 18:16, 10 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I say that we create an "interesting but unimportant events" section to place this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.218.59.4 (talk) 04:12, August 27, 2007 (UTC)

That would be a great idea, not sure how likely it is of being adopted though. Ygoloxelfer 00:14, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Day of Accord and Reconciliation in Russia[edit]

November 7 demonstration in Yaroslavl, Russia (2004)

I'm planning to write on this day. Can anyone confirm if the official name has the prefix "The" i.e., is it "Day of Accord and Reconciliation" or "The Day of Accord and Reconciliation"? --Mahadevan Subramanian 06:47, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Looks like there is no official translation. Both versions with and without "the" are used. "The" does not add value, most other holiday names in Wiki don't use it. I suggest no "the". --Gene s
Thanks, Gene. --Mahadevan Subramanian 16:59, Apr 1, 2005 (UTC)

Democrats take over house[edit]

I'm curious why this can't be omitted? When the republicans took over the house in 94 it is listed under that election day, but not when the democrats took it over. Seems odd. Also I was just about to come back and add about Pelosi, but seeing my addition of the house removed, don't know whether to add it, dont' see how that is not historical. ChopAtwa 12:19, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Eh I'm gonna add the thing about Pelosi...if its not "historically relevant" then remove it, but I doubt that its not relevant. It's the first woman speaker ever. But I won't add the take control of house thing until i get clarification on why it was removed, and yes i see the thing above...its just that it has been added on other days events for republicans taking over house. ChopAtwa 12:26, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Events for 7 Nov 2006 Nancy Pelosi becomes the first woman speaker of the house in United States history.[edit]

Nancy Pelosi is in line to become speaker of the house. She will need to be elected by the Democratic caucus first.

Star Wars Galaxies[edit]

This is the anniversary of the first player to achieve the status of Jedi in the MMORPG. Its an event. it happened on this date. Its important to a large number of people. problem solved

School shootings[edit]

Just how globally notable is the following?

It seems that school shootings are becoming pretty common. What makes any particular school shooting (or all of them for that matter) globally notable? I think this falls under what is not notable. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 22:56, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. It can be added in later on if Finland or for instance the EU as a whole end up bringing in some new laws related to it. RevenDS 02:07, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
See this. Do I have to point out where have they become common? As it appears, most of them take place in the U.S., and what ranks this even higher is that this was the first major school shooting incident in nordic countries. Also considering that this made it to headlines in the U.S. (CNN) and the UK (BBC), hence qualifying as a "globally notable" event. The Finnish government has already presented a new gun restriction law and introduced modifications to older gun laws. And if I may say, the disappearance of Madeleine McCann is a freaking joke compared to this, yet, it is listed as a globally notable event. Based on same way of thinking, "children disappear all the time". And thats a fact. johnny902 21:09, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure I know what "see this" is supposed to say. The fact that the story made headlines in other countries indicates that it is globally "newsworthy" not globally "notable". If this particular incident directly led to new gun laws in Finland, it might be notable. But only marginally. What makes a school shooting more notable than an armed robbery? Please don't think I'm being argumentative, I just want to be sure that we are not including every school shooting just because it is a school shooting. Since these types of events are becoming common, each one is becoming less notable than the last. I agree that the Madeleine McCann event is not notable (I thought I even removed it). I'm sure you also understand that there are a lot of non-notable events that just haven't been removed yet. The newest always get attention first. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 21:54, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
"See this" is meant to show that most of school shootings take place in the U.S., making school shootings less common in Europe, and in this case, first major incident in Northern Europe. Moreover it has been proven that this particular shooting was planned days before execution, posting premeditated videos on YouTube and writing essays of the upcoming (including his suicide, note two days beforehand). Also (I strongly believe) this is the first case in which the perpetrator has been in contact with another perpetrator, Dillon Cossey, and possibly exchanged tips. And yes, this particular incident led to new laws in Finland - as Reuters put it "its easier to get a gun than a driver's license in Finland" - and that will change from now on. I understand why you disapprove this since you're American. School shootings happen "all the time" in the U.S. and you are entitled to be sick of hearing these. But the U.S. is not the whole world, I don't blame you if you cannot pin-point Finland's location on a map but there's a world outside the U.S. as well that defines "notable" in a different way. Perhaps you don't find this notable but Europe most likely does. Like I said, these things don't happen THAT often in Europe. Frankly speaking I don't even care that much of this even I may sound like I do - but I don't. I'm sickened why this still hangs in the news a week later, however, I feel this was a somewhat big deal in a small and quiet country like Finland where you least expect things like this to happen. Because this was planned beforehand, like the perpetrator put it "I don't want this to be a random school shooting, this is a massacre", it qualifies as a notable event. I got a bit carried away but I lost track of the time in the early hours so :) johnny902 03:17, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have done my best to craft my comments in an unbiased way, but it seems that you have the impression that I am an ignorant American who lives in a bubble. It is unfortunate that you feel that way. Since this Wiki is viewed by people all over the world, I try to make judgments by putting myself in the other's shoes. I believe that school shootings are localized events that do not have any effect on the outside world, much like an armed robbery. Your assertion that this particular shooting is a special circumstance in the context of the justice system in Finland might have merit. My concern does not lie in the notability of this particular event but in the notability of all future school shootings. I guess, in the end, debate needs to occur on a case by case basis. Like you, I do not feel strongly enough to argue the issue further, so long as some thought has gone into the inclusion of the event. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 03:45, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If I thought you were ignorant I wouldn't be writing here, trust me on this. You have some interesting points that an ignorant person is unable to realize. Its possible that my text came out wrong and I apologize for that. Tiredness has caught me. Anyways this case should be re-viewed after the incident's aftermath has been processed properly. I hope someone else would swoop in and give his or hers two cents regarding this issue. johnny902 04:42, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jon Daly[edit]

I have removed the link for Canadian recording engineer Jon Daly's 1988 birthday. I find it hard to believe that this person is notable at all and they may have been added as a prank. Furthermore, the link directed the reader to a page about Irish footballer Jon Daly, born 1983. If I have removed this link in error, please alert me on the discussion page, and I'll be happy to reach a suitable solution.Pygmypony (talk) 19:33, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This happens all the time. People add vanity entries with links to other articles so the bot can't pick it up. If you make a mistake and delete a legitimate entry, someone will add it back if it is notable enough. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 12:35, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Example of greeting card for the Day of Great October, 1960-ies, Ukraine[edit]

File:Листівка-зі-святом-Великого-Жовтня-Бублик-Яків-Павлович.jpg
greeting card with the holiday of Great October from Ukrainian Soviet village teacher Jakiv Bublyk, village Kapustynci, Jagotyn rayon, Kyiv oblast in Ukrainian SSR to his relative - daughter Anastasia and Ivan, his son-in-law, village Shramkivka, Drabiv rayon, Cherkassy oblast, 1960-1970-ies
I've posted this greeting card as typical example of greeting card for this event during the Soviet Union period. But it was removed from the page. What do you think about this? Serge-kazak (talk) 16:41, 7 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Holidays and observations - add St Tremorus of Brittany[edit]

this day as per Wiki article, ref http://catholicsaints.info/saint-tremorus-of-brittany/--Richardson mcphillips (talk) 01:06, 31 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Richardson mcphillips:, That appears to be a good source. Why don't you add Tremorus of Brittany to the article with the citation? I recommend you use the {{cite web}} template. If you need more info, check out Wikipedia:Citing sources. Maybe try it out in your sandbox if you're not sure how to do it. Toddst1 (talk) 14:02, 31 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
