Do we have the right man?[edit]

According to A. Baranne and F. Launay, Cassegrain : un célèbre inconnu de l'astronomie instrumentale / Cassegrain: a famous unknown of instrumental astronomy, Journal of Optics, 1997, vol. 28, no. 4, pp. 158-172(15) http://www.ingenta.com/isis/searching/Expand/ingenta?pub=infobike://iop/jopt/1997/00000028/00000004/art00004 the Cassegrain in question would be Laurent, born in the region of Chartres around 1629, died at Chaudon (Eure-et-Loir) on August 31, 1693.

The Britannica (15th edition, 1974) only lists "Cassegrain, N.". (Which doesn't match Guillaume either).

User:Cody666 introduced this tit-bit of (mis)information, but he seems to be no longer extant.

Hmm, you have a point! Some quick google searches fail to resolve the issue. This page (http://http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/C/Cassegrain/1.html) claims Cassegrain's first name is not conclusively known. This page on the other hand ( http://www.centurytel.net/lphilpot/optics.html) is one of many claiming Guillame as inventor. Your Journal of Optics source looks fairly conclusive, however. I personally think we should go with that. Perhaps a sentence pointing out the mysterious nature of this man, and a link to the paper (or at least a full reference) would be helpful to reverse the trend of misinformation!

It seems we have two items here, the person the the telescope design. Can we split them please? There should be a disabiguation page rather than a redirect.

I agree that 'Cassegrain' and 'Cassegrain telescope' should be split into seperate pages. However, I am not sure that there is any need for a disambiguation page here. A search for Cassegrain should return the person, and if the telescope was what was wanted, then it is easy to click on a link from the Cassegrain biography. A search for 'Cassegrain telescope' will also return the correct page.

Wikipedia disambiguation guidelines say - "Do not disambiguate, or add a link to a disambiguation page, if there is no risk of confusion" - I believe the two articles are sufficiently related that there is no risk of confusion.

I won't implement any changes until another user expresses support for this view (I'm new here, and may not be interpreting this correctly).
