Changing direct linkage[edit]

Tribes is a video game with the more commonly used term "tribes" as it's title. I am removing the direct link to this page when using the term "Tribes" only, as the term "tribes", as a social concept, will continue beyond this game.

This article will be accessible by using the term "tribes" through a link supplied at the top of the Tribe(s) article as well as using Tribes (game). I did not create a disambiguation page as there would only be three entries so far, Tribe(s), Tribe (biology), & Tribes (game)

I'm not happy with the article's name change from "Tribes (game)" to "Tribes franchise". After all, we don't have articles named "Star Wars franchise" or "Microsoft Windows franchise". - Brian Kendig 00:02, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)

* I absolutely agree. It's not a good change, it's without precedent (no "Virtua Fighter franchise", etc., or anything else). Also, no one will search for "franchise" just "Tribes" or "Tribes Game", etc. It's also not quite famous enough to get "franchise", despite how great they are. Terrapin 13:09, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)

12/1/2005, this page probably needs a reference to Tribalwar (another wikipedia entry) and a quick summary describing the linkage between the two.

Disagree with direct link change[edit]

I completely disagree with changing tribes to direct towards tribe. Why would someone type the plural tense for an encyclopedia entry? Do most people search for fish, or fishes? Perhaps if they were searching for a list of tribes, yes, but then they would likely include "list" in their search terms. And saying that the social concept will continue beyond the game is irrelevant; this is an encyclopedia, meant to record and catalogue data. What you have said is akin to saying "well, since almost no one will remember it a few years from now, it's really not that important", which is defeating of the purpose of an encyclopedia in the first place.

I think that although the game will not likely ever be as popular as it once was, it does not forsake its notoreity via the term "Tribes". I am changing it back to redirect towards the game as I have a good faith belief that the majority of people typing in "Tribes" are looking for the game series.

Although forum posts by the development team were occasionally cited by the gaming press, the TribalWar forum site does not seem to be independently notable. McGeddon (talk) 15:51, 8 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The article for the game which, itself, may not be notable - surely an article on a website to discuss the game (one of at least three - the other two mentioned in the article) is not notable. I think we can all agree that the site was conceived and operated as a fan site until 2005 when the game development was halted for a few years. No one disputes that. The Wikipedia article, standing now 10 years later, is about the pre-2005 website. We are only evaluating the article. In that context, it is one in a series of 4 fan sites for a video game; PlanetTribes, World Online Gaming League, TribalWars, and the plethora of Trail Wars Forums (currently active). There no third party references establishing notability. This is why merging it makes sense at this time.

If TribalWar is a notable fitness, men's lifestyle, and classified market website, that Wikipedia article needs to be written (10 years is more than enough time to update the previous article) and submitted for approval. I think we all welcome that. Despite the fact that there were a handful of edit warriors here, we all know that it was only a handful out of 1,000s of members that have belonged and contributed to that website over the years.

Release date[edit]

Does anyone have a concrete release date for this series? It seems to vary, usually bouncing between November 30th 1998 and sometime in December 1998, though I've seen a few mentions of January 1999 as well. This wiki page lists Starsiege: Tribes' release as December, however the official Starsiege: Tribes page lists the release as November 30th, 1998. Stranger yet, the citation for that points to a page claiming it to actually be in December. A few relevant articles:
