Tapu[edit]

You did a great job on fleshing out Tapu. Davodd 21:25, Jan 2, 2004 (UTC)

George Grey[edit]

Although there is not yet an article about him, Sir George Grey was a prominent British Liberal politician of the mid-19th century, who served several times as Home Secretary (1846-1852,1855-1858,1861-1866), as Secretary of State for the Colonies (1854-1855), and twice as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (1841,1859-1861). Having George Grey be about the New Zealand PM can lead to confusion, especially with links. We need to come up with some way to disambiguate, certainly, although feel free to do it however you'd like. john 02:54, 6 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Sounds good. George Grey (British politician) would probably be the best place for the other. john 03:12, 6 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Noble titles vote[edit]

Vardion, I'm happy to see you changed your vote on the first question. I'd agree that the question is not necessarily worded that well - much of my understanding comes of prior discussion of it, found in the archive. As to your current explanation for the second vote. Do you mean people not predominantly known by their peerage title? Most famous peers are not primarily known for their peerage title, but for the various things they did, with some exceptions, of course, although they may be known because they had peerages. john 05:51, 11 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Democratic Primary page[edit]

On U.S. Democratic Party presidential nomination, 2004, your reformatted table with states vertically and candidates horizontally looked fine to me (browser: Mozilla Firebird 0.7). Why'd you revert it? --Delirium 11:48, Feb 8, 2004 (UTC)

Oh, ok, didn't notice the location issue. Yeah, I have no idea what's causing that. --Delirium 12:03, Feb 8, 2004 (UTC)

I recently attempted to make a table at U.S. Democratic Party presidential nomination, 2004 (superseding a previous one). The table itself has come out okay, but always seems to be put at the very end of the document when the page is viewed (it's supposed to appear part-way through). I've looked at the code several times, but I can't find out why this happens. Is there anyone knowledgable about such things who can tell me where I've messed up? Thanks. -- Vardion 03:17, 9 Feb 2004 (UTC)

This looks fixed now, so I removed it from the village pump. Feel free to put it back if it wasn't really fixed. Angela. 04:04, Feb 9, 2004 (UTC)

Maori[edit]

Do you know Maori? Perl 15:35, 23 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Could I respectfully urge you to take another good look at http://mi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Recentchanges and see if you or any of your friends can make more contributions? It's still basically a one-man band! Robin Patterson 01:42, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for response; some specifics[edit]

Thanks for the response at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Robin_Patterson&diff=6485174&oldid=6427377 - on rereading your User Page I think your Maori is probably as good as mine! And you did great things between February and May. You could now:

  • copy images (including some of your famous maps) from "en:"
  • make improvements to, or even create, lists without much knowledge of grammar - the Ngata Dictionary is (as you may know) very helpful, giving several imitable phrases for many words.

But I'd hate to rush you and put you off. Any chance of, say, one small edit per week so as to add more variety to the http://mi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Recentchanges if nothing else? I could give you a reminder (email?) if you were half-agreeable... (:-D
Robin Patterson 05:13, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Your response on my talk page has made my day.

Barnstar from Robin

I award you this barnstar for your great work in many New Zealand areas of Wikipedia. :)

A map of tribal areas would be ideal to illustrate mi:iwi. I've written to the address given for the Confederation of United Tribes (which has a good map of that sort on its website) and await a response. The Reed Pocket Dictionary has one too, with fewer tribes shown. If we could get an outline that Wikipedians can modify, I'd be willing to add our own info if that's the only "free" option. Kia ora. Map requests[edit]

Hi Vardion. I am trying to finish up the country tables for those countries that do not have one, and I noticed that there was no locator map for El Salvador. Would you happen to have one handy? Danny 13:16, 22 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Thanks! Danny 02:45, 23 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hello, Vardion! I think your location maps are great, thank you for making them! Could you, please, make some more for Montserrat, Greenland, Puerto Rico and Northern Mariana Islands? --Romanm 11:53, 4 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Thank you, I added them to Greenland, Puerto Rico and Northern Mariana Islands! IMHO the maps are just fine and there's no need to improve them; after all their purpose is to get some insight where on Earth the country is located (approximately). Should you have some extra time it'll be great to have Montserrat location map too. --Romanm 07:28, 5 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Thank you for Montserrat map! Do you also happen to have a map for Åland and Guam, please? --Romanm 20:20, 12 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for those too, I incorporated them to their articles! Could you, please, also make location map for Svalbard, Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands and U.S. Virgin Islands? --Romanm 21:18, 14 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Again, thanks for the maps! Could you also provide one of those for Gibraltar, Faroe Islands, Netherlands Antilles, Tokelau and Anguilla, please? --Romanm 12:47, 26 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for those maps, too! --Romanm 08:00, 2 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Could you, please, make some more maps for American Samoa, Jersey, Hong Kong, Macau, Saint Helena and Falkland Islands? --Romanm 16:00, 16 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for those maps too, I added them to their pages, along with the Guernsey map! --Romanm 16:46, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Hello, Vardion! Could you, please, make locator maps for Pitcairn Islands and Cook Islands? --Romanm 13:16, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Map Request New Zealand e-democracy[edit]

Hi, saw you in recent changes in NZ Politics pages and then discovered your maps. Any chance of doing new zealand electorates or council boundaries? I would like to use them in various e-democracy websites (only public one so far is [1] but I intend to make this lobbying application available for any topic). P.S. sorry I couldn't resist - I reorganised you talk page a bit. - Drstuey 10:22, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)

not sure how this works, now I answer on your talk page? I would like both types of maps - ultimate wishlist is...
* map of NZ showing general electorate boundaries (this I have already )
* map of NZ showing Maori electorate boundaries
* map of NZ showing Maori and general electorate boundaries ???
* map of each electorate (basically just the shape, but also a bit of greyed out bounding electorates and coastline and sea)
* map of NZ showing city or district council boundaries
* map of NZ showing regional council boundaries
* map of NZ showing regional AND city or district council boundaries ???
The reason that the 'Maori and general electorates' and 'regional AND city or district council' ones are ??? is because I think it's maybe a bit too geek to think that showing how one is sub-divided is interesting. The key thing for me I guess are the maps of NZ with the single boundaries because then each electorate or council can be coloured to indicate their position (on any topic). I would like one for each electorate though as well, to illustrate electorate pages. cheers - Drstuey 10:52, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • Thanks for your reply, guess what I was going to leave a message here yesterday after I discovered the election results maps you put on the NZ elections pages. They are so much better than my girlfriend's electorate map. e.g. [2] yours manage to fit so much more into a small space with more clarity I reckon. I was going to ask where is the blank version, so that individual colouring-in can be done? BTW, do you know anything about auto colouring-in using a database? I'm actually thinking of a flash app.

With regards to single electorate maps, I think it is maybe a good idea to do single coloured in shrunk versions of the main all electorates maps - same ways as you did the where in the world versions of the countries - so this is fine.

I have got very large PNG files from elections.org.nz for each electorate (email the webmaster or I can burn a CD for you - actually I only have the Auckland ones) they have the boundaries and every single street/road in the electorate as a single thin line! (they are quite annoyinging large to deal with).

I don't know about you but I won't be interested in the council map ones until after the general election!

P.S. Can you do a new world map mini icon for the geo-stub template? It uses - yuck! the jpg compression artifacts make it unrecognisable!

    cheers, Drstuey 09:31, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Maps usage permissions[edit]

Hi Vardion, Your Maps are REALLY GOOD !!!!!! I have been trying to find such maps since a long time, was wondering if I could use these maps in my website ? Keep you the gr8 work !! - Amit Bhawnani

Sure, feel free to use them wherever you want. Thanks for the complement. -- Vardion 14:22, 13 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Vardion, your blank world map is very cool and I was thinking it might work for a web project I am considering. I am wondering how the GFDL applies if I use the map in a web application, where the countries on the map get different colors based on data in my system. If I want to comply with the GFDL in that case, do I need to make the colored maps available for download, or does the software have to be GPL'd as well? I may very well GPL the software anyway, but I wanted to figure out the implications of using the GFDL'd map beforehand. Keep up the good work. --Boone 03:18, Apr 14, 2004 (UTC)

(answered on your talk page...)

Hi. What's the licence of Image:LocationGreenland.png ? I employed it on fr:WP, but I need to explain if it's public domain or GFDL or else. Would you please answer me there ? thaks a lot !! :o) --Pontauxchats 15:14, 14 Apr 2004 (UTC)

feel free to use it however you want. In my sens, this means public domain (and that's what I'll write on the description page of fr:Image:LocationGreenland.png. I think it's important to choose a licence and to write it, so that there's no more trouble for other wikipedians and users. But thanks for your job ;o) CU --Pontauxchats 06:31, 17 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Hi there, I just wanted to say that your maps are brilliant. Currently I am just working on an internet project and I need a world map. Could I use it on my site? I read the GFDL, but I didn't understand it all, so I thought, I should ask you... Harume 13:40, 17 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Armenia and Azerbaijani locator maps[edit]

Hello! The shape of Armenia on the Image:LocationArmenia.png is somehow different to that from the Geography of Armenia page. Are you sure that you didn't include azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh region by mistake? --Romanm 13:53, 16 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Hello, Vardion! The new Image:LocationArmenia.png IMHO looks just fine. You'll probably want to make the reverse change to Image:LocationAzerbaijan.png too. Thanks for the other maps too! --Romanm 05:56, 29 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I second that. I know nothing of New Zealand politics, but I heard a big report on the radio here in Britain recently about the controversy, and thought, "I know where I can find out more about all this: Wikipedia." Thank you for your efforts. — Trilobite (Talk) 06:47, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Map licensing[edit]

Hello Vardion,

I (and other users of the German Wikipedia) have used some of your maps in the German country articles.

I noticed that there is no licensing statement on the image description page for the Japan location map: Image:JapanLocation.png. I assume it is GNU FDL, is this correct? Could you please state this in the description page or at least send me a message? It would help other Wikipedias a lot to reuse them, as for example in the German Wikipedia, people are much more critical about Image copyrights than here in en: - only GNU FDL and public domain is accepted.

At the moment, there is a general review of all images' licensing terms, and during this I found out there was no clear statement for the location maps.

If the license is not GNU FDL, please tell us this, too.

With kind regards, --zeno 18:17, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for the answer.

New Zealand Democratic Party[edit]

As far as I can see the New Zealand Democratic Party takes a position in the New Zealand political spectrum similar to progressive liberal parties elsewhere. Therefore I included it in the category Liberal parties. I added a simple explanation in the introduction. Gangulf 10:13, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Labeling New Zealand parties[edit]

Some claim that present-day ACT and the former United New Zealand are/were liberal parties. I have some doubts. Can you help me. I got the impression that ACT is a libertarian party. UNZ merged with Future New Zealand, adnd the results seems not to be liberal. Gangulf 10:41, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

If you remove New Zealand from the list, is this due to New Zealand not yet adhering to the principles, or is there any other reason? /Tuomas 14:04, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Elections[edit]

I was the one who added the politics of New Zealand template to all the elections and the parties of New Zealand. Some people prefer this kind of templates over categories and I personally like to add this kind of templates to related articles. So for example, if one visits the page on the National Party, one can easily find links to related articles. I would like to restore this also in New Zealand. Could you agree to find a way in which we can do this? Gangulf 14:19, 28 Aug 2004 (UTC)

See my update. In this way it fits both our interests and this template can be added to the New Zealand parties. Gangulf 16:52, 29 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Tran Van Ba[edit]

Hello, I had recieved a email from Tran Van Ba with Wikipedia representative, I can forward the email to you. He has stated that he wanted to correct the biography in non-neutral terms because of it was not within the proper format of guidlines of Wikipedia. Jimmyvanthach Jimmyvanthach

Note that I am not a "Wikipedia representative"; I specifically stated in my E-mail (which I cc'd to "Tran Van Ba") that I was not speaking in any official capacity, but only trying to gather information to help resolve an ongoing dispute. Anyway, my statements still stand and are not addressed by the above response; in fact Van Thach appears to be the very person who is accused of sockpuppetry and vandalism. This really isn't how I want to be spending my time!! Hob 17:43, 2004 Sep 13 (UTC)

Maori seats[edit]

You are too modest with http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Maori_seats&diff=0&oldid=6371307 - expanded "a bit"? - you've practically doubled it! Great work. (Now if only we knew someone to put it into Maori, so it could be added to a page related to http://mi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paremata )! Robin Patterson 05:14, 6 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Thoughts on local body election results?[edit]

Do you think it's a good idea to do a page with 2004 local body election results? New Zealand 2004 local elections or New Zealand local body elections, 2004 perhaps? Not sure on the title. SimonLyall 13:01, 9 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Bruce Beetham[edit]

Hi there! Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I have to confess I have no idea which name is correct. My soul source is my own memory - going back some 12 or 13 years now. I followed Bruce Beetham quite closely because he was my hero when I was younger, but I don't have any reliable sources to go on. I seem to remember hearing it called the New Zealand Coalition, but it may well have included the word Centre in its title as well. I wish I could answer your question!

Kyoto article move[edit]

Hello, I'm curious as to the reason for moving the article from Kyoto, Kyoto to Kyoto. The trend is toward getting all cities, towns and villages in Japan to a consistent naming convention of City, Prefecture (with redirects for famous cities like Kyoto) but your move is counter to that trend. Fg2 22:00, Nov 5, 2004 (UTC)

Hi again, and thanks for explaining your reasoning. You do raise some good points. Especially, I agree that nobody calls it "Kyoto, Kyoto" --- that would be ridiculous! Except when it's needed, e.g. to distinguish it from Kyoto Prefecture. So, you'll find other city names that duplicate prefecture names listed with their names doubled: nearby Nara, Nara, Osaka, Osaka, and Wakayama, Wakayama, as well as Aomori, Aomori, Akita, Akita, Niigata, Niigata, Chiba, Chiba, Shizuoka, Shizuoka, Fukuoka, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Nagasaki, and Okinawa, Okinawa come to mind. The function is simply to distinguish the city from the prefecture.

By the way, since you have an interest in Japan, I'd like to invite you to check out Wikipedia:Japanese Wikipedians' notice board. It has lots of projects to work on, including collaborations, and it's got convenient links to relevant articles and discussions. Fg2 00:32, Nov 6, 2004 (UTC)

Copyright on Political Party Logos[edit]

Hi, I'm just letting you know that I updated some of the political party logos you added to reflect the wikipedia logo-copyright boilerplate. For instance, here. I'm sure this is all very very boring to you, but I'm just letting you know since you were the image uploader.

Outstanding work on the N.Z. articles, by the way. -- FirstPrinciples 15:54, Nov 8, 2004 (UTC)

Presidential system[edit]

You made some improvements to the presidential system article, but I think the figures about democratic failure rate should be included. That is a crucial piece of evidence in the argument against presidentialism being a stable regime type. dinopup

Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...

  1. ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
  2. ...all articles...

using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. So far over 90% of people who have responded have done this.

Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template (or MultiLicensePD for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know at my talk page what you think. It's important to know, even if you choose to do anything so I don't keep asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk) 14:39, Dec 3, 2004 (UTC)

Map of Vietnamese Provinces[edit]

Hi,

By any chance might you be able to share the file you used to create the map on the Viet Nam page (Provinces of Vietnam)?

I work for a non-profit NGO that operates in Viet Nam, and we're trying to find a map with provinces in that I can use to show which ones we work in.

I'm trying to find a map file with which I'll be able to set all of the provinces we do not work in to be the same color, and then set the ones we do work in to be a different color (ie something with the text andor provinces in different layers), and the JPEG on Viet Nam page is obviously compressed to a single layer.

I'm pretty new to WikiPedia, so I'm not sure if these working files are available somewhere and I just haven't found them. If they are, might you be able to point me to them?

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer.
