Middlesex was its postal county?[edit]

I have made sure next to "was its former postal county" it notes general usage (by all residents and businesses) is to still put "Hampton, Middlesex". Almost without any exception and across all ages, no-one on an address would write "Hampton, Greater London" or "Hampton, London" though that is technically now correct. (Sources: It is an example as with much rest of Greater London that was in Surrey/Middlesex between 1925-1964 including Harrow, Romford, Richmond, Kingston-upon-Thames and Bromley of people in almost all cases sticking to the long established counties, these being key places within those counties and often remaining so, for example Bromley has a Kent-covering sorting office to serve areas beyond its borders and Surrey County Council headquarters is in Kingston-upon-Thames.

All property search websites have a filter by Middlesex and directories still exist it would seem on popular demand such as www.imiddlesex.co.uk) Adam37 (talk) 08:31, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I write "Bromley, London" and so do many local businesses.

If I was writing a letter to Hampton I would put "Hampton, London, TW12"

2023 refresh[edit]

Hi - I'm not sure who's monitoring this page but I thought I'd set out some ideas to refresh the page. I am a local resident.

I have already drafted a short history of the area from Anglo-Saxon times to the 1980s, and hope to bring this up to the present and flesh it out a little further. I'm not sure of the relevance to the Gazetter and John Wilson so would propose deleting this.

I would also suggest creating a stand-alone heading or section for the Thames islands (and potentially the riverside), and link to their respective Wikipedia entries.

The introduction needs to be tidied up once the main article is refreshed. The point about Hampton being in county Middlesex probably doesn't need the extraneous detail.

All of the census information needs to be updated for the 2021 census.

There could probably be a bit more on John Garrick, the villa and the temple - maybe a standalone section?

The General Roy cannon is interesting and relevant but should probably go in a section on local features (e.g. the islands, the lido, Garrick's villa)

I'm happy to work through the above but interested in any views.

Plans for next additions:
- A short summary of the historical pubs of Hampton - prob in Local Features
- Flesh out the 20th C, and esp the post-War period. Lots of useful material and insight in John Sheaf's work and elsewhere. Will try to bring it up to date to the C-19 pandemic and reference the high prevalence of people WFH (compared to England, as recorded in the 2021 census). Also needs more on Nurserylands. Need to be careful here as approaching people's lived experience.
- Not planning to do any data-dumps from the 2021 census - don't think it's Wikipedia's job to replicate information. Will look to adapt any qualitative findings into the history section. Will prob delete the 2011 demography section - basically says "Hampton has houses and is white."
- I'll look to go through and conform the various population statements so they have a consistent basis or are clearly footnoted as to what they represent. "Hampton" has changed over the years, and the article should reflect that shifting scope and make it clear what each number represents.
- Will try and summarise if possible Hampton's governance over the years (Manor to Parish to UDC to LBRuT etc), maybe in a stand-alone part in the History section, or try and reference the shifts in the narrative. Orwell'sElephant (talk) 17:34, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Will also look to add details on the ferry and bridges. Might put the islands, ferry and bridges under a single heading like Hampton and the River Thames.

As it currently stands the article is close to the 50,000 character limit. I think there might be scope to have a standalone article on the Waterworks. I'm also going to look at getting old OS maps through WikiCommons to add to the history section. Orwell'sElephant (talk) 13:22, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've restructured a lot of the article grouping materials under major headings and adding sub-headings. Next steps are to flesh out parts of the History section so it can be split into balanced sub-headings (medieval history in particular). Then incorporate the 2021 census.
