Frequently asked questions

Q1: Why is [Insert event here], an event that is "more important and significant" than all the others that are currently listed, not posted?: A1: Relative article quality along with the mix of topics already listed are often deciding factors in what gets posted. Any given day of the year can have a great many important or significant historical events. The problem is that there is generally only room on the Main Page to list about 5 events at a time, so not everything can be posted.

As stated on Wikipedia:FAQ/Main Page, the items and events posted on the Main Page are chosen based more on how well they are written, not based on how much important or significant their subjects are. It is easier for admins to select a well-written, cited, verifiable article over a poor one versus trying to determine objectively how much a subject is important or significant.

Keep in mind that the quality requirements only apply to the selected bolded article, not the other links. Thus, an event may qualify for multiple dates in a year if there is an article written in a summary style and an article providing detailed content; if one of those pages have cleanup issues, the other page can be bolded as an alternate.

Another criterion is to maintain some variety of topics, and not exhibit, just for example, tech-centrism, or the belief that the world stops at the edge of the English-speaking world. Many days have a large pool of potential articles, so they will rotate in and out every year to give each one some Main Page exposure. In addition, an event is not posted if it is also the subject of this year's scheduled featured article or featured picture.

Q2: There are way too many 20th-century events listed. Why aren't there more events from the 19th century and before?

A2: The short, basic reason is the systemic bias of Wikipedia. There are not enough good, well-written articles on 19th-century and earlier events for all 365 days in the year. Currently, a majority of users seem to be generally more interested in writing articles about recent events. If you would like to further help mitigate the systemic bias in Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Countering systemic bias.

Q3: This page seems to be biased toward events based in [Insert country or region here]. What can be done about it?

A3: This again is attributed to the systemic bias of Wikipedia. Many users are generally more interested in working on good, well-written articles pertaining to their home country. Since this is the English Wikipedia, there will be more English-speaking users, and thus more articles pertaining to English-speaking countries. And if there are more users who are from the United States, there will probably be more well-written articles about events based in the United States. Again, if you would like to further help mitigate the systemic bias in Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Countering systemic bias.

Q4: Why is the birthday/death anniversary of [Insert name here] not listed?

A4: There are only four slots available for birth and death anniversaries. As with the events, article quality and diversity in time period, geography, and reason for notability are all contributing factors in whether an article gets selected for inclusion.

Q5: Are the holidays/observances listed in any particular order?

A5: Yes, there is a specified order: International observances first, then alphabetically by where observed.

Q6: Some of the holidays/observances that are listed have dates in parentheses beside them. What do they mean?

A6: There are two reasons that some holidays/observances have dates next to them:

Non-Gregorian-based holidays/observances are marked with the current year as a reminder to others that their dates do in fact vary from year to year.
National Days, Independence Days, and other holidays celebrating the nationhood of a country are generally marked by the year of the significant historic date being observed.

Strong Picture[edit]

I feel that the twin tower burning picture is associated by most people for this day so we should consider replacing the current Pinochet picture with the twin tower one. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 12:22, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect that Ambuj.Saxena is right that the "twin tower burning picture is associated by most people for this day." To me that is a reason to prefer a picture about the coup in Chile - which led to the disappearance & presumably death of arguably a comparable number of people. Particularly when it's the 40th anniversary of the Chile tragedy & the 12th anniversary of the USA tragedy.

Today is the anniversary of Allende's death & the bombing of Moneda Palace so images of them would be more appropriate today anyway. Pinochet's official leadership was yet to come. Surely many supporters of Allende's goverment, being anarchists or socialists, would licence photographs they took to a commons.

Today is a day when an unusual number of people, especially USA residents will be consulting eg. Wikipedia about anniversaries. Most will never in their life search through the Talk or Help sections or know much of Wikipedia policies. Not featuring Sept 11, 1973 TODAY, or even listing the coup on the main page's selection of "On This Day ..." has two detrimental effects on those who look at the main page:- To those who know about the coup, Wikipedia will appear to be Anglophone or USA centric. Those who don't know, won't learn of it if they don't go to the expanded "On This Day ..." page. Both these outcomes are bad for Wikipedia & it's readers.

The relevant articles are always likely to be fairly poorly written, (most Wikipedia articles I read aren't VASTLY better than https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_Chilean_coup_d'%C3%A9tat IMNSHO), because the edit wars about those two Chilean governments & the transition will likely continue as long as Wikipedia enables it.

Anyway, I'm a beginner at editing so I thought it better to just post on the talk page. I hope my totally opinionated contribution will be considered.

MISLEADING[edit]

The bit about the Chilean coup implies that 3,000 people died during the coup whereas this is just a compilation of all of the Pinochet-era deaths from 1973 to 1989. In addition, Pinochet didn't seize full control until September 13, so any mention of those deaths belong on that date. CJK 00:24, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Important 100th Anniversary of a World Event missing.[edit]

Today (September 11, 2006) is the 100th anniversary of the launch of the Satyagraha movement in South Africa, the first ever Nonviolent resistance movement that Mahatma Gandhi launched. There are plans to celebrate it in different ways the world over. Ought to figure here. deeptrivia (talk) 04:40, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mahatma Gandhi started his Satyagraha movement on 11th September 1906. This was an extremely important event which eventually lead the independence of an entire country (India). I think this must be mentioed on the main page. Thanks. --APandey 10:44, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Patriot Day[edit]

Today (September 11) is "Patriot Day" in the United States of America. (See http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/09/20060907-7.html). I am surprised that it is not listed as such, even when the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks is listed.LemonJuice 23:09, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I left this out deliberately when I do the annual update. The '9-11 attacks' is already a listed anniversary, so let's avoid over-featuring the same stuff. Variety is preferred. And, there is a 'soft cap' on the number of holidays listed on MainPage at 3 per day to avoid overcrowdedness. ('Soft' because sometimes TFA is long, ITN is short and I need stuffs to fill up the void on MainPage, sometimes I can't count, sometimes I can't decide what to leave out..... Too many US-related dates[edit]

Guys, three of the five are US-related. No-one's going to quibble with 9/11, but I think we need to lose either the Mormons or the Hawaii hurricane. I chose the World Wildlife Fund to replace the hurricane as every other entry is to do with war and/or fighting and death and destruction; you have taken it out and added - wait for it - yet another battle! Different picture needed[edit]

The 2008 September 11 POTD/featured picture is going to be 9/11 related [1] so the On This Day picture shouldn't be about the same topic, dreadful as it was. How about the World Wildlife Fund logo, as that is something hopeful rather than doom and gloom related, like coups and wars etc? Also, I seem to remember this OTD photo was used for OTD last year. 9/11 shouldn't have the monopoly, every year. Other momentous events have happened that should be highlighted. In all indications currently on Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests, United Airlines Flight 93 will also be that day's featured article. In either case, the September 11 attacks event will be hidden on the OTD page when it is updated a few days before it goes onto the main page. That was the worst civilian terrorist ordeal in world history! Believe it or not, a kid who's 9 or 10 now may not even remember 9/11. Sad as it is, it still would be the ultimate rudeness to forget it for some stupid drawing of a panda! Even if United 93 is the article, I think that one of the most important things on September 11 happened in 2001. Hell, in most of the English speaking world just saying "September Eleventh" is in reference to the attacks. As I basically stated above, the last paragraph of Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries#Preset options states an event should be hidden if it also is the featured article or the featured picture for that particular day. There has already been a complaint on Talk:Main Page#September 11 that both today's featured article and the featured picture for today are both related to 9/11. We should not add to this problem. Is there a particular reason why the September 11 attacks haven't been included, in "Recent Anniversaries" or anywhere else on the homepage? 13 years after it happened I think it is still the event most associated with "September 11th". The absence of the 1973 Chilean Coup D'etat is also striking. While I understand why it is important to showcase a different mix of events each years, I still think it's extremely odd to omit two of the most important events of the past half-century.theBOBbobato (talk) 16:25, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, the Christiana riot I actually understand but[edit]

why is the Swami Vivekananda article in the listing again when Mountain Meadows massacre hasn't appeared in the listing since 2011? Mountain Meadows was moved out and Christiana Riot was moved back but the Swami listing was left in and here's the thing...it already appeared at least in 2019, 2018, and 2016. I cannot adjust the page now as it is too close to the date so it's protected. Howcheng, I guess it's up to you at this point. Shearonink (talk) 01:57, 10 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

So we like to have diversity on multiple axes: chronological, topic, and location. Length of time since last appearance is a lesser consideration. The only times I'm OK with keeping in two articles that are close in time to each other are when both are having a significant anniversary (multiple of 10 or 25 for <= 100 years old, multiple of 25 otherwise) so 1851 and 1857 won't be acceptable, especially when both are US-related (Vivekananda is US, but it's Indian too). So @Erp: 170th anniversary doesn't count in my book as a significant anniversary. On the other hand, even though I'm the person who edits OTD the most, I'm not necessarily in charge of this section either, and since Erp added that article before you moved Mountain Meadows in AND it's that article's first appearance, I'm inclined to give it a little bit more weight. BTW, Christiana Riot § Incident has a couple of paragraphs that are missing footnotes, so Erp, you'll want to add those before someone else comes by and tags them with {{citation needed}}. Added footnotes though I need to double check exactly which pages. I've taken a look at the September 11 page and did a bit of a hunt though a bit late for this year. The Battle of Vienna took place on 11 September 1683. The Ear-reddening game of Go was played on 11 September 1846 though that article needs some work (only one source and somewhat specialist). Jenny Lind gave her first American performance on this date in 1850.
