Principia Mathematica[edit]

I can't find an english version either, it might have been in their plans at some point in the past. Can you read french? The library's page doesn't actually say much, other than that they have a copy and that it's exposed. I visited the library last month (very interesting if you have a chance, it's in Geneva), and I got the information from eavesdropping on someone who paid for a guided tour. Hope that's legal....;-) UnHoly 00:00, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Great Court, Trinity College[edit]

I've replied to your question on whether one of the towers has been moved -- Bluap 10:09, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

As for why the clock strikes twice, I've checked the major reference sources for Trinity (Trevellyan's history of the college, the Royal Commission for Ancient Monuments report for Cambridge, and the Architectural History of Cambridge University) and, while they mention the clock being installed, they don't mention any particular reason for the double chime. I suspect that the "once for Trinity, one for John's" is just an urban legend. Bluap 12:52, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Multiple photos for Wiki Featured Pix[edit]

Thanks for your comments Solipsist. I can see your point of view, its just that in the previous times I have submitted multiple but similar images for featuring, I have found that more often than not, the photo I would have chosen to feature aren't what other people think should be featured. The latest example being the Australian Garden Orb Weaver Spider. I personally would have chosen the first image to feature, but people were in favor of the the third option. If you think it is too much of a problem having multiple images, I'll rectify the problem. --Fir0002 01:54, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Actually I'm officially back now. The POTD looks good. Evercat 19:47, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)

  • A bit late to answer your last comments (I had been away for about a week and have only just logged on) but I think your idea is a good one. You I trust will review my latest when I fell a series should be included? Thanx anyway. By the way, the text on the Australian Garden Orb Weaver is great, I'm rapt thant it's a POTD. Minor point on the text, although usually the spiders make a web each night, I have once seen a spider to use a web for several nights. It was a very good web so maybe thats why (although I've seen some magnificent webs pulled down by some perfectionist spiders} but I think it was because the female occupant of the web was waiting for a mate - I had seen one of the little guys on the out-skirts of the web the first night I noticed it. --Fir0002 22:16, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Airbus Industrie → Airbus[edit]

Thanks for taking the time to support the move I suggested, much appreciated. Mark 19:10, 19 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for POTD Notification[edit]

Thank you again for notifying me about my photo becoming a POTD. Text and everything is great.

Thanks again for your consideration Solipsist, its appreciated. Your Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar is certainly well deserved. --Fir0002 09:02, 20 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Pentakis dodecahedron - not me guv[edit]

Picture of the day/January 24, 2005[edit]

Hi, Solipsist. I'm ecstatic that the Pu`u `O`o photo is now featured & a picture of the day. I have a question: should the picture of the day be Image:Puu oo.jpg or Image:Puu Oo cropped.jpg? In my opinion, the cropped version looks better when displayed as a smaller image, because a lot of the black stuff has been cropped out. But, the cropped version wasn't nominated as the featured picture, so it may be Not Proper. What is the right thing to do here?

Thanks!! -- hike395 16:49, 22 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I'm glad you are enthused. We could use a lot more feature quality images.
Strictly, you are right, it is the uncropped version of Puu Oo that was promoted. However, I took a look at using the cropped version in Wikipedia:Picture of the day/January 24, 2005. To be honest, there's not much in it, but I rather prefer the original - its a little close to the 'rule of thirds' in its composition. -- Solipsist 18:53, 22 Jan 2005 (UTC)

You "refactoring" of my post was slightly heavy-handed, and perhaps not in the spirit of Talk_page. If personal attacks worry you, "refactor" Adraeus' comment [1].

Your analysis of User:Vfp15 as level-headed and rational is not supported by any evidenece I have seen, although maybe I have become too close to this whole debacle. --Mrfixter 11:11, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Dale Chihuly[edit]

You're right. I just got an e-mail from his studio refusing my request to license the images as cc-by-sa, so I've removed them from commons, scaled them down a lot, and I'm about to put them back into the articles as fair use. However, the e-mail looked very much like a form letter and I'm not sure if they understood the nature of this project, so I'm going to call them tomorrow and ask for special permission. Arbitration Committee case opening[edit]

You have been named as a disputant in the recently opened Charles Darwin/Lincoln dispute case brought before the Arbitration Committee. You may wish to add evidence to Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Charles Darwin/Lincoln dispute/Evidence to support your case. -- Grunt 🇪🇺 03:32, 2005 Jan 25 (UTC)

Wikimedia commons[edit]

Hey, first thanks for letting me know about the POTD. The text looks good. Also, I have a question for you regarding the Wikimedia commons - can we nominate pictures uploaded over there on the Wikipedia FPC? If so, how do I add the FPC template? Do I just create the new page? Thanks! --Spangineer 01:54, Jan 27, 2005 (UTC)

Yes, suggesting Commons images for WP:FPC is fine, as long as they also contribute to an article on the English wiki. In fact it is increasingly common. All you need to do is create the image page on the English wiki and add the {{FPC}} to that. From the current candidates, see for example Image:Joslyn Fountain Court.jpg.
There is also a separate Commons Featured Picture process. -- Solipsist 09:35, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Wakizashi[edit]

Hi. I edited the image for Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Edo period Wakizashi.jpg, blurring the background slightly to remove artifacts and sharpening the sword (i.e. the image thereof). Could you have a look to see if this would change your vote? If not, no problem, and happy editing -- Chris 73 Talk 11:50, Feb 5, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you -- Chris 73 Talk 02:49, Feb 10, 2005 (UTC)

POTD edits[edit]

Hi Solipsist! I need to figure out how to have this included in future Wikipedia:POTD/Date pages; the idea is for people to be able to specify a width. { {POTD|100px} } should do the expected thing.

But it requires the Wikipedia:POTD/Date pages to have an extra {{{1}}} in them... +sj + 04:11, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC) What's the right way to update the template for those future pages?

Archive - Nominate new image

Ah, I see. That's quite a good idea.
I stepped into the breach to maintain PicOfTheDay when User:Solitude left last December. He had a offsite script which generates the monthly listings such as Wikipedia:Picture_of_the_day/February_2005, but that no longer works. Also I think User:Ed g2s did quite a lot of the ground work relating to POTD.
There may be some templates I'm unaware of for creating the individual POTD/Date pages, but at the moment I paste in the boiler-plate text for each day and replace the relevant sections. So I'll just include the variable in future POTDs. You will need to update the pages which explain how to include the POTD on user pages.
The only problem I can forsee is that occaisionally I will reduce the standard 300px width to balance the size for tall portrait images. There are also a couple of very wide panoramas which will probably require a non-standard layout. An individual size override wouldn't take that into account, but it wouldn't matter much. -- Solipsist 07:56, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

One would think that the good Dr. Hugo Heyrman would be pleased that at Wikipedia he is treated equally with Dr. Albert Einstein! JillandJack 18:01, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Your Opinion Please![edit]

Hi, Solipsist

Have taken up on your idea and created my semi Featured Picture Candidates page.

I would like you and several others (User:Sj, User:Solitude, User:Boffy B, User:Chris 73) to be the people who vote in this.

I would greatly appreciate your opinions on the photos.

The link to the page is User:Fir0002/FPCandidates

Thanks --Fir0002 08:30, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)

VLA pic of the day[edit]

Thanks for letting me know. And I'll have a shot at tweaking the capition -- the really impressive thing about that site is the three 20-km long railway lines the things get shunted down. Cheers, Hajor 15:29, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

POTD[edit]

Not sure what to do about the table formatting... I'll note this as a bug related to using curly-braces for too many different semantic purposes.

Also, see my change to the current POTD thumb-layout. I lowered the width of the box to 100px, so that if you pass in "100px" as a size, you don't end up with a tiny image in a big box (forced by the length of the picture title, for instance). At normal size, the image will force the box to 300px anyway.

Such... A... Hack. I feel dirty now. But for once I've stuck a POTD on my talk page :) +sj + 06:26, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Featured image[edit]

Hi, Not sure if this is the right place to put this comment. I updated the caption on the weedy seadragon featured image to fix the distribution. Thanks for the heads up on this! I am quite surprised by this outcome. Rling 09:15, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

That looks fine - but you shouldn't be surprised at FP selection, its a nice picture. If you have any other that are similar feel free to nominate them on WP:FPC -- Solipsist 14:28, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I just got permission for this image to be used throughout Wikipedia. -- BRIAN0918  15:38, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks[edit]

I wanted to thank you for reverting all of those spam links added by User:67.172.239.72—that looks like it was a lot of work! Just letting you know your efforts were not unnoticed... --Fastfission 17:58, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Well, lot of work, not lot of work -- thanks for doing it! As for the language of the nuke people.. yes, it's all very strange and macabre, which is part of why I enjoy studying it. There are layers and layers of strange and perhaps inappropriate metaphors.. enemies "exchange" warheads, missiles "take out" another, weapons systems can "marry up", the wiring between warning and response is called "coupling", "fratricide" refers to the destruction of one warhead by another, "vulnerability" and "survival" refer to weapons systems and not humans, etc. --Fastfission 00:58, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Re: Licensing[edit]

What should I specifically ask the snowflake image creator, and others, when asking for licensing? I doubt they'll just release it under GFDL. Should I just ask if it can be used on any encyclopedias or on any Wikimedia content? Would that be enough? The only reason the snowflake licensing is currently restricted to Wikipedia is because that is all I asked him for. I'm sure he'd extend it if I asked. -- BRIAN0918  22:06, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Why you are of course :-) Seriously, thanks for everything Solipist. I've noticed you around, as I'm sure you've noticed me around. It's been fun, and I feel a little "homesick" already... but it's gotta be done. Catcha later mate, and I hope things go well with you! - Ta bu shi da yu 08:15, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)
