Categorisation[edit]

Over the course of this template's history, there has been a fair amount of change in its default recategorisation scheme. Originally, the years were unsorted. Then, they were sorted by their last digit. Later, they were changed to no sort by letter (i.e. . As of this writing they are all sorted under the asterisk, as are lists (). Can there be some discussion on the best system by which to sort these years? →Iñgólemo← (talk) 04:37, 2004 Dec 7 (UTC)

The following seem to sort in the same order, without (unneeded) headers:
 •
 •
 •
I turned it back to use the "*" rather than " " as I already used the "*" for other articles/categories within People by year which are not articles about people being classified (e.g. Recent deaths). This allows to distinguish entries in the categorylinks table e.g. Category:1920s births only on the sortkey (everything without an "*" is an article about a person). -- User:Docu
Okay, thanks. Maanandil 'Bomber Maniac' Ingoolemo

Just because, for example, Category:1947 births might include a few "c. 1947" cases where the exact year is not known, doesn't mean this is a category for "people born c. 1947" since it doesn't include people known to be born in 1946 or 1948, which would also be "c. 1947". If "people born in 1947" is not good enough for you, you'd have to use a more complicated wording like "people born in 1947 and people born c. 1947 whose exact birth year is not known". Wikipedia:Avoid using meta-templates[edit]

This policy means - do not place "templates within templates".

There, I discussed, now revert back. -- Netoholic @ 12:54, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Would you provide us with a test version of the change as well as a link to page where you discussed removing the categorization. The same goes for Template:Deathyr. -- User:Docu

Somebody has to put <noinclude> tags around the interwikilinks, otherwise they show up on every page where this template is used. Nedless to say, this goes for the Deathyr template as well. /Ludde23 Talk Contrib 20:42, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can we please add the following: <br>See also Main Article:{}{}. Jerry 06:12, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, I haven't worked too much with these templates, but if I understand things right, that seems to be redundant to the already-present "People born in {}{}." I could be wrong, though. – Luna Santin (talk) 19:59, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is. Neil (not Proto ►) 12:15, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No. Please see my explanation on Template talk:Deathyr. Jerry 03:54, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Beginnings by year cat[edit]

Please can this template be edited to automatically include its transcluded categories as sub-cats of the relevant Beginnings by year cat. Thanks Greenshed (talk) 20:20, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please make your requested changes to the template's sandbox first; see WP:TESTCASES. If you need help with this, please give me some more details (and examples) to show what you mean. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:16, 18 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Beginnings category[edit]

Could someone update the template so that pages are included in the [year] beginnings category? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Numberguy6 (talkcontribs)

@Numberguy6: is this the same as the request above by any chance? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:19, 18 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think so. --Numberguy6 (talk) 16:53, 18 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I propose adding the newly created Base category banner to this template (and to the Death year category header), to make it clear that Albert Einstein should be in Category:1879 births, but Category:Albert Einstein should not. Any objections? I just did a cleanup, would be good to avoid in the future. Best, UnitedStatesian (talk) 17:58, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
