Class Project: Update[edit]

We have added content collected over the course of the semester. This content was comprised and edited by the class after learning the Wikipedia guidelines and viewing a few example pages. This content is not one hundred percent complete just yet, but if any individual wishes to make friendly amendments or notify the class of any mistakes on the Talk Page, we would greatly appreciate it.

P.S. Sources are coming! --Shieldsm (talk) 03:22, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Dear class, please read WP:MOS carefully. Your recent addition of a huge amount of text needs to be carefully edited to comply with our standard layout. Also, you should carefully consider which information is encyclopedic and which is trivial and overly detailed. Interspersing text with external links is not an acceptable form of referencing. In addition, I would expect that there would be independent sources on a large and important society like this one. As for the infobox, please read its documentation to see how it should be used. I don't want to discourage you, so I haven't reverted your addition (although I did add a bunch of pertinent maintenance tags - some of the links therein may help you), but you clearly need to put in more work in order for this to become a quality addition. Thanks. --Guillaume2303 (talk) 06:18, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • Dear Guillaume2303, Thank you for your prompt feedback. We are in the process of editing the page right now to include independent sources and remove some extra detail. We tried to follow the format of other Social Science Association wikipedia pages (specifically the American Psychological Association), which is why it was longer. In addition, after reading through the page, it is still unclear to us how our infobox is being used incorrectly. Thanks again for your help.--Barbprince (talk) 17:12, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Class Project: To Do[edit]

Our class has decided to update and expand this page as a part of our class project and as a part of the ASA Wikipedia Initiative. Since Wikipedia is a platform for the sharing of knowledge, the class has chosen to participate in this important social movement. We will be updating this page to improve its content and acheive a GA rating, so that future visitors to the page will have a better understanding of the association and contribute to the additional spread of sociological knowledge. To understand what goals and content we wish to achieve, we have viewed the Wikipedia pages of other social science associations and have come up with a basic outline; we are also being guided by our professor during this class project to keep us on task. Here is what we would like to see on this page to improve it.

Main Sections Sections' Components
Name Section Opening Paragraph (summary of article), and perhaps a side box/table with quick facts and picture.
Profile Section Mission Statement, Awards, Membership/Titles, Organization's Structure, Affiliate Organizations, ASA Wikipedia Initiative, ASA writing style, ASA journals
History Section Founding, Presidents, Controversies?, Official positions on certain social issues?
ASA Today Section About the current ASA, Current sections of ASA, ASA Meetings
See Also Section In accordance with other Wikipedia pages
Notes Section In accordance with other Wikipedia pages
References Section Updated as we go and in accordance with other Wikipedia pages
External Links Section In accordance with other Wikipedia pages

This project is due by 3 May 2012 and will be continuously "in-progress" until that date. --Shieldsm (talk) 04:35, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Code of ethics issues[edit]

I am wondering on what basis does this encyclopedia make claims that "In recent years, it has faltered from its own code of ethics, weakinging the discipline's legitimacy and credibilty by upholding and publicizing an array of normative political statemens that themselves have no sociological basis. . ."?

You should ask the user who added it. Without a source this indeed looked like a POVed piece of info. It is now removed.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 22:21, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect[edit]

I'm not quite sure as to why "Sociology of peace war and social conflict" redirects to this page? Does it have anything to do with the article? 24.115.40.142 23:39, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No. It should be fixed now. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 16:56, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Name change[edit]

Removed "(the named was changed after morally unfit people showed up for the meetings looking for ASS)". Could not find any proof of this and the ASA's website says that the name change was the result of the group growing from a small society to a larger association. http://www.asanet.org/cs/root/leftnav/asa_history/rhoades_1981_history_chapter_7 Philatio (talk) 01:49, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've heard this explanation offered as an anecdote several times. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 16:56, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Class Project: Editing Suggestions[edit]

    • Dear Barbprince, I would suggest adding a photo of the current president of the American Sociological Association to associate a face with a name for the current president of the organization. Also, I would work to include a more detailed description of the association. More relevant citations would be useful in the furthering of this article. Under the organizational section of the article, perhaps links could be provided to the Wikipedia pages of the current holders of those positions. Also, go into further detail explaining the different levels of membership so that all the information is present on one page.
