Discussion[edit]

Another version of this article spelled his name "Tullio Levi-Cività" with an accented "à". This appears to be wrong: the Italian Wikipedia, in particular, does not use this spelling. -- The Anome 10:20, 25 Apr 2004 (UTC)

In http://www-gap.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/References/Levi-Civita.html , only two of all the references, both by the same author, use the "Levi-Cività" spelling. -- The Anome 10:23, 25 Apr 2004 (UTC)

In Italian, if the "a" carries a tilde, it must be "à" (the "a" vowel only admits the "accento grave"): http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accento_grafico. Indeed, the correct pronbunciation puts the accent in the "a" of "Cività", so it mus be written this way. You can see the correct spelling from the official page of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei: http://www.lincei.it/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=21. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.232.153.149 (talk) 00:16, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In Tullio Levi Civita (Lèvi Cìvita), the vowel "a" is not accented, that's it! Furthermore, is not a word; is a surname (in Italian, there are no 'rigid' rule for surnames apart the accent when drops in the last vowel, but in "Civita" is not the case). If the accent drops on the last vowel you must use it even in the written text: e.g., in the word "città" (city), in the surname "Cavaglià". Mgvongoeden (talk) 07:38, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

pronunciation[edit]

(pronounced le-ve shi-vit-e) — could this be made more explicit? Does 'e' mean the same sound in all three places? If so, why such a huge deviation from what one would expect in Italian? —Tamfang 07:22, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Using english pronunciation I would write this name as: "'Too-llee-ou 'Leh-vee 'Chee-vee-tah" but it is rather inaccurate. As for IPA symbols, italian is almost always identical to IPA symbols, so i would write "'levi 'ʈʃivita " , but i am not sure i am picking the correct symbol for the "c" in Civita (postalveolar affricate). Co-discoverer of de Sitter space[edit]

The article on de Sitter space lists Tullio Levi-Civita as co-discoverer, in parallel to de Sitter, of that what is now called de Sitter space, and the article gives a reference to Levi-Civita, Tullio (1917), "Realtà fisica di alcuni spazî normali del Bianchi", Rendiconti, Reale Accademia Dei Lincei 26: 519–31. However, I don't have enough background in this subject to verify the claim. Can someone verify it and then insert a statement about it into the article on Levi-Civita?
