I found one source that claimed his birthdate was May 6 on the old calendar but adjusted to May 17 in the new calendar. This seems an odd statement. Rmhermen 17:37, May 1, 2004 (UTC)

Doubt claim of relation to William Penn[edit]

A distant relative of William Penn? This is unreferenced and I've read other sources that say this is simply a unfounded but common assumption about the Penns of Virginia. Ftjrwrites (talk) 20:34, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Date of birth[edit]

A reliable source is needed to clear up confusion regarding John Penn's date of birth.

A recent edit changed the infobox DoB from 1741-5-17 to 1740-5-04, leaving the death date unchanged at 1788-9-14, and leaving the lead unchanged with "(May 17, 1741 – September 14, 1788)". I will revert that edit because it accidentally broke the template and because no reference was given, other than an edit summary saying "Fixed the birth date to match is headstone".

Find a grave has a photo of a plaque erected in 2014 saying "John Penn May 6, 1740 – Sept 14, 1788". There is no indication whether the birth date is old style or new style. I cannot find a photo of the headstone.

Old Style and New Style dates suggests that in the US, Sep 2, 1752 was followed by Sep 14, 1752. That is, what would have been Sep 3 became Sep 14 giving the rule that 11 is added to an old style date to get its new style equivalent.

Signing of the United States Declaration of Independence#List of signers has links to other signatories. A few that I looked at had different ways of reporting old style/new style dates.

The reference (1829) says Penn was born May 17, 1741. I don't see any indication of whether that is old or new style.

Category:American slave owners[edit]

No mention of slave-owning in the article. I feel that this category should be restricted to people whose slave-owning history was notable in itself. Valetude (talk) 03:52, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
