sainsbury[edit]

The article says: For example Sainsbury's took on similar project in London only to close it down few years later.

Is it talking about Sainsbury's to you? If so it is wrong, because that service is still running. I'll remove this if nobody objects. Edward 13:00, 2004 Dec 25 (UTC)

Maybe. What I know there was large warehouse built just for the purpose of online delivery and its capacity was underused (~10%) and this warehouse was at the end shut down. I wrote some SW for it. I do not have link on press release (it it exists) but got email notification (with snide remark inside about the costliest museum ever built). I guess the webpage above is smaller scale leftover. Maybe the sentence could be soften. Pavel Vozenilek 21:02, 26 Dec 2004 (UTC)

archive.org links[edit]

The dozen-or-so links I clicked on the following page all redirected to Network Solutions, not an archived version of the e-tailer in question. Removed, for now.

The archived versions are no longer available at archive.org because the current holder of the domain (Network Solutions?) added a robots.txt file to prevent access: "We're sorry, access to http://www.webvan.com/ has been blocked by the site owner via robots.txt. " RedSource (talk) 11:52, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any way around this restriction? Clearly the content was on archive.org at some point.... ~ PaulT+/C 08:08, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is Shaheen still getting that $375,000 a year?[edit]

The article which states Shaheen is still getting $375,000 a year was written before WebVan’s bankruptcy. When they went bankrupt, an article written by the AP and which was widely distributed (see, for example, [1] and [2]) includes the following paragraph:

When it files for bankruptcy, Webvan's unsecured creditors will include Webvan's former CEO George Shaheen, who resigned in April, triggering a clause in his contract that required the company to pay him $31,250 per month for the rest of his life. With the bankruptcy, Shaheen "will have to get in line with the rest of our creditors," Grebey said.

This in mind, I have removed the phrase implying that Shaheen is still getting this money. Samboy (talk) 22:36, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good work. Thanks! Binksternet (talk) 22:47, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like editors are not reading the talk page before editing the article. An editor added incorrect information implying Shaheen is still getting that $375,000/year today. That in mind, I have added this information to the main article. Samboy (talk) 07:09, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I’ve done some more research on this. There is a mention in an August 2001 article in The Guardian that the company was trying to pay Shaheen $375,000 for life: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2001/aug/14/business.citynews; however, as per Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_175#The_Guardian there is some question as to how reliable this news source is. In terms of whether this particular article is relevant, consider the following:

  • This article only has a one sentence mention about the remains of Webvan saying they will pay Shaheen again post-bankruptcy.
  • There is no description of how this information was obtained (in reliable journalism, they will point out whether the source is an anonymous source, based on the reading of a legal filing, or based on the statement from a company spokesman).

However, since this article from The Guardian makes the case Shaheen was getting paid post-July-2001, I have reworded the article to only claim Shaheen is an unsecured creditor, and no longer claim he is not getting paid.

Also, there is supposedly an article from C|Net dated from 2002 claiming Shaheen is still getting paid, but the article is actually yet another May 2001 article when Webvan was still claiming Shaheen was still getting paid even though he left the company; we know this because the dead links in that article which talk about event from a month ago point to, when using the Web Archive, April 2001 articles. Simply put, the date stamps on some of C|Net’s articles about Webvan are inaccurate. As another example, C|Net’s article on Webvan’s bankruptcy claims to be from 2007, but describes their mid-2001 bankruptcy. We simply can not use the dates on C|Net’s articles about Webvan to determine whether or not Shaheen is still getting paid.
