Godmoding[edit]

I think this should mention 'godmoding' as in roleplaying

What? -- Consumed Crustacean | Talk | 02:49, Jun 4, 2005 (UTC)
"Godmoding" is the practice, in roleplaying communities, of perpetually insisting that your character maintains superiority in all competitive aspects. I.E. Roleplaying a warrior insisting that you can never be killed, or refusing to dictate actions that indicate that you are being harmed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.253.36.46 (talk) 03:31, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Edited this page for better understanding of god modings use in online text-by-text role playing. --Kuro Tsuwamono 19:43, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Degreelessness Mode[edit]

id software didn't have any console for Doom (well the dos version at least) and also they called it "Degreelessness Mode" by typing IDDQD. Quake, and every Quake engine based game since then uses the GOD command for godmode. CheapAlert 01:06, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Buddha mode[edit]

I've taken the liberty of including a bit about "Buddha mode," which resembles god mode in that the player cannot die, and is named as such in Source engine-based games like Half-Life 2. I'm not sure if the cheat predates these games, but it seems appropriate to cite them as examples for now. ╫ 25 ◀RingADing▶ 17:48, 24 October 2006 (UTC) ╫[reply]

IDDQD Infamous?[edit]

"In earlier games, such as Doom, one must simply enter a code during game play - in the case of Doom, this code became infamous - IDDQD."

Some needed source or background is missing here. Why would it be infamous? Did it work in Deathmath? Of course, I remember the code well, but I didn't play multiplayer Doom much. --70.128.121.105 17:18, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

IDDQD is the DOOM II cheat code for God mode. IDSPISPOPD is the god mode code for original DOOM. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Bizzybody (talkcontribs) 10:16, 27 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]
Nope, IDSPISPOPD is for no-clipping. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.151.133.105 (talk) 15:07, 24 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Disambig justification[edit]

Whoever keeps removing the link to powergaming at the top, stop it. "God mode" and "God mod" are one letter away from each other, and I've seen a significant number of people refer to godmodding as "god modeing" (sic), so I think it makes sense. Unless you can come up with a decent reason for removing it, leave it there.--Agent Aquamarine 22:33, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(The following was moved from my talk page, as I think it relates more to the article than to me.--Agent Aquamarine 03:36, 24 January 2007 (UTC))[reply]

powergaming has nothing to do with god mode so it shouldnt be there. its like me doing the same sort of thing and putting a 'for the microsoft windows page see ....' on a page that is an article on Role playing games, it just isnt right. if the 2 subjects were similar then it would be allright since the terms could get mixed up or have multiple meanings. but people going to a god mode article are not there by mistake when they were looking for a powergaming article. and so, unless you provide a GOOD reason for why it should be there, i will remove it since its irrelevent and simply NOT NEEDED.

And just so you know, this is what wikipedia has on the subject of disambiguation: Disambiguation in Wikipedia is the process of resolving conflicts that occur when a single term can be associated with more than one topic. In many cases, this same word or phrase is the natural title of more than one article. In other words, disambiguations are paths leading to different topic pages that share essentially the same term in their title.

and you can see for yourself, disambigation is for terms that can be associated with more then one topic, god mode is not associated with powergaming, its not used to describe powergaming, and its not even the same subject as powergaming.

I stated a reason, but you seem to have ignored it. Godmodding is a very common name for powergaming, and many people make the mistake of referring to it as godmodeing, or something of the like. They may not have the same article title, but in many cases, they share the same name, or extremely similar ones. If they were the same thing, there would be no need to have a link to it, would there? I know they're not the exact same term, but that's why I think it deserves a disambig, as they're very often confused. So unless you have something to say that doesn't include the use of multiple phrases in capital letters and patronizing recants of Wiki policy which can be basically summed up as "they're not the same thing, n00b!", do share, but in the proper place. And for someone who seems to have Wikipedia policy memorized, you seem to have trouble signing your posts.--Agent Aquamarine 03:36, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For what it's worth, I was looking for "God Modding" in relation to RPGs, and ended up here by the redirect. So that's my case for a disambig page right there. --66.91.208.210 05:14, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that "god modding" is quite different from "god mode" in this article. God modding is a form of powergaming, but it does not refer to the "god mode" found in a video game. I don't see any good reason for a merger with this article. God modding is closer to powergaming than it is to "god mode" and if anything, those two articles should be merged. Not godmodding and this article. --Frugen 23:17, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Play-by-post role-playing games[edit]

I see A LOT of PBPRPG games that bans godmoding...probably because controlling the games is so easy! You don't need any computer programming skills or cheat codes or telling-your-friend-to-look-over-there-while-you-take-a-peek-at-his-or-her-cards tricks! Just a little of thinking and you can control the game, despite that you may be killing other people's characters, making them out of the game before they have the time to react.Coffsneeze (not Coff N. Other aspects of "god mode"?[edit]

This article discusses "god mode" as invulnerability "cheat codes" that may have originally been in place for developer debugging of a single-player computer game. I thought the term also applied to special privileges for people in online multiplayer environments such as MUDs, that allow them to develop the game further (for example, creating new areas or new things players can do); or to special abilities or controls granted to players acting as moderators, to penalize or ban misbehaving players. Or maybe even to the game master of a pencil-and-paper RPG; the Gamemaster article even mentions the term "godmodder" (similar to "god mode"?) as a synonym.
