Post horn

You made an edit to Post horn and left the note, "Expand as part of Missing encyclopedic articles." Tell me more about this project. Is post horn listed somewhere in the Missing encyclopedic articles? --Dbolton 19:46, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Well the Missing encyclopedic articles is a wikiproject dedicated to creating articles that have been identified as important either by other encyclopedias or some other criteria. Post horn was an article listed in both a general encyclopedic list created several years ago and a newer "Hotlist" which combined entries from Encarta, Britannica as well as some other encyclopedic sources. Because it was listed at both the Hotlist and the general list it was put on a separate crossover list GeneralxHotlist. Because the article needed just a little more information before being removed from the list (the goal is to "check off" completed articles), I expanded the info for the post horn and removed it from the GeneralxHotlist list. I put the edit summary so that people like you would become curious about the project and potentially help out.

You can check out what links to post horn and you see that one of the subprojects, Wikipedia:Music encyclopedia topics still has a link to post horn. It had been "checked off" and removed other lists but still needs to be removed from music list as well as an internal list that is on my page.

You can help this project mainly by creating articles and pruning the list. A word of warning though, a blue link does not necessarily mean that the article has been covered. A rule of thumb is not to remove an item from the list unless it has approximately as much information as other encyclopedic entries.

I am also going to change my edit summary so it is a little more clear. It should read Expanded rather than expand so that other people know that I expanded it and is not a call for them to expand it. Feel free to ask any other questions. --Reflex Reaction (talk)• 20:14, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Trumpet - good choice

I liked your recent edit of my recent edit on the Trumpet page - it's clearer. I almost went for the "12 pitches of Western music" phrasing myself. That article seems to need a little better organization and focus, which I'm trying (slowly) to accomplish.Special-T 20:11, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Noticed that you removed this sentence:

Your edit summary suggested the reason as POV. I think there may be a misunderstanding. A chapel, by definition, is not usually the home to a congregation. That is what is meant by "true chapel". It was not meant as a value judgment. Glenn4pr 02:55, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Sorry I didn't get around to weighing in. It seems that people are working on a good solution. The only comment I'd make is that it seems to be more of an issue of there not being a universallyh applicable set of fonts. Perhaps I'll make that point. David Brooks 23:53, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for correcting my editing on "Brushed With Blue" at "Musical Notation". (The site must have been in mid-editing when you reached it...I've had no problems.) I observed your syntax for creating a music file directly from a website, rather than having to navigate from a home page, which can be confusing and time-consuming. The site with "Brushed with Blue" seems to be working well at the moment, but I still prefer your syntax, which takes the viewer directly to the music. It's probably the best approach for outside audio links, since it spares the viewer the inconvenience of having to wade through sitemaps and such.

Musical Notation

I think your piece on "Intelligent Musical Notation" is worth adding to the Musical Notation article. It could easily interweave with the "Perspectives" section, or stand as a separate section. Well done!!

I've also slightly changed the "Brushed With Blue" link, to acknowledge the composer as the performer, and to specify that the sound track is No. 2 of the set...NOT the complete Op. 55!

Back again! I don't know why you moved such a worthwhile contribution to the talk page. It has now been 30 days, and not one editor has commented on it. I think it belongs in the Article. I've seen musical notation consisting of no more than abstract art, left for the performer to interpret! In some jazz, such as Pritchard's "Not Today", rests are often marked with accents! I've also seen changes of volume intensity indicated by boldness of print, and rubato by the spacing of notes.

Obviously, modern composers must devise new methods of notation in order to express new musical concepts. (I was a little upset by one editor of this Article, who, about a year ago, insisted that traditional European notation is capable of notating ANY musical thought! Unfortunately, remnants of his views remain in the article.

Musical notation must obviously evolve with the art of music itself!

PLEASE, move your contribution to the main article!!!

Hi David. From your background I can see that we're probably editing from the same perspective - my great-grandmother was from Lamoni, and I too lived in Independence as a younger man. I placed the word Ladies' Relief Society since JSJr. used that phrase in Nauvoo, it appeared on documents, and it was repeated throughout the RLDS/CofC tradition (see Inez Smith Davis' The Story of the Church, 1934). This is as opposed to the popular Mormon use of the title stressing the word Female throughout their historical accounts. However, it certainly isn't worth an edit war. Chromatic trumpet

Are you the author of "History of the trumpet" from Graceland University? (I am impressed. There are rumors that Wikipedia bullies away experts, preferring dilettanti).

Under the heading of chromatic trumpet, you wrote that Haydn's trumpet concerto was the first for keyed trumpet by a major composer. Were there other chromatic trumpets that barely left the workshop yet someone wrote a concerto for them? Were there minor composers who wrote for the keyed trumpet? Did Weidinger write anything? Well, you qualify as more of an expert than I do. I don't play a musical instrument and I never went to college, much less write anything that comes up in a google scholar search. Everything I know about music comes from listening to the radio. A little bit comes from reading the little books that come with CD's.

I think I read in one of those that with just a few exceptions, everything in Haydn's concerto is playable on the natural trumpet. Willi Gers07 (talk) 22:34, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Under the heading Links normally to be avoided the first point is "Any site that does not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a Featured article." A featured article for trumpet, horn, etc. on Wikipedia would contain all the information in the links you added. There is also a possible conflict of interests if you are the owner of the external site (see the next heading: Advertising and conflicts of interest). --dbolton (talk) 20:45, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
