Hi I'm kind of new to Wikipedia but know (somewhat) about Hannibal Hamlin and want to help out with the article. I know this article needs citations for verification but do we know what sections specifically need to be cited?

He Married Sarah J. Emery Dec. 10 1833. she died 1855

Children:

George Emery Charles Cyrus Sarah J.

He then married Ellen Vesta Emery (Sister of Sarah) on Sept 25, 1856, their children

Hannibal Emery Frank.

The Emery family had a prominent influence during the Revolutionary war. Two signers of the Declaration of the Independence are descendants from the original Emery family, Josiah Bartlett and Thomas Heyward.

This information is found in "The Descendants of John and Anthony Emery of Newbury, Mass. 1590-1890" By Rev. Rufus Emery. This book was written by executives of the Emery Family Association. Rev. Rufus Emery served as President of this association, and Hon. Hannibal Hamlin served as one of the Vice Presidents during the 1890-1891 session. Hamblin or Hamlin

The article mentions the family historical name as "Hamblin", but both Hannibal and his 17th century ancestor James are listed with the last name Hamlin. Is there any record of the name being Hamblin? Valley2city 06:22, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

In unsourced records, I see that there is an earlier Hannibal Hamblin b. 30jan1809, who married Abigail Abbott. The earlier Hannibal's occupation is listed as Surveyor/Mathematician. I know from reading many original records from the early American period, that the family names did change in spelling, sometimes two spellings at the same time in history.. I guess that in an age where literacy was still growing, that this kind of thing could be more easily forgiven ? that particular one - Hamblin, was common in earlier years.. that MA family line starts in 1639. Emery

I have just edited the article to state that Hamlin had three sons, Charles Hamlin, Cyrus Hamlin, and Hannibal Emery Hamlin. Beforehand the article strongly implied that Hannibal Emery Hamlin was the son of Charles Hamlin, i.e. that he was Hannibal Sr's grandson. My sources were the NNDB [1], the Political Graveyard [2], and the New York Times' account of Hannibal's will, [3] which might be a good source for further expansion of the article. The problem is that the New York Times article is itself ambiguous; it also implies that Hannibal Emery Hamlin was Charles' son, and furthermore it implies that there was a fourth son called Emery Hamilton. The Times' obituary of Charles states that he left behind four sons, none of them called Hannibal Emery Hamlin, although again it is ambiguous because of course Emery might have predeceased Charles. It would be great if someone with access to a proper printed biography of the man could clear this up. -Ashley Pomeroy (talk) 19:46, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Regarding the fear of Barack_Hussein_Obama having an Arab name, has anyhing been written about Hannibal_Hamlin having an Arab name, or Lorenzo_Thomas having a name rooted in Latin, Latino, Lazio, Latium, Italy, Spain?

How many similar names are there of the first sesquicentennial era, not British?

Charles Curtis was half Native American... has anybody complained about that lately. I have a very serious reason for asking and that serious reason is that it's just as ridiculous and meaningless as the questions above. It is said, in some "obscure quarters in the US, that Mr. Hannibal Hamlin may had had African American ancestry in his gene pool. Can anyone either verify or discount this? There were racial insults thrown at Northern Leaders, including VP Hamlin. I have records of family tree in several directions past and nothing is ever said about African ancestry at any time. Portrait of Hamlin

Who is being shown in the photograph of VP Hannibal Hamlin? According to Worldhistory.us, "Hamlin, wrote Barnwell Rhett,editor of the Charleston (SC) Mercury had black blood in him." Hamlin did have a dark complexion by several sourced descriptions. it must be remembered that few Americans traveled outside their communities in the 1860s,let alone their states. Few ever saw either President Lincoln or his four-year presiding Vice President, Hamlin. Grady, according to Lincoln in his autobiography had already doctored Lincoln's photographed image by lightening it to better appeal to white voters. Brady, it seems did the same with Hamlin and most certainly softened his Negroid hair. 24.89.5.135 (talk) 15:22, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
