Untitled[edit]

"Eriksson's supporters cite the fact that in 134 years of international football, they have only ever once won major tournament quarter finals on foreign soil." And if I am NOT mistaken, in those 134 years, England has gone beyond the quarter finals in major tournaments twice actually. 1968 Euro they finished 3rd and 1990 World Cup they finished 4th. Both ironically were in Italy. I will make such correction. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.196.9.236 (talkcontribs) 01:31, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Sven pronunciation?[edit]

How do you pronounce this name when it's written in English? Swen or Səven? -Iopq 04:33, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"Sven" is easy enough for English-speakers to manage despite the /sv/ cluster being somewhat phonotactically unsound in English; it is usually pronounced /svɛn/. 86.136.95.149 02:37, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It's impossible. Every time I say Sven I either end up saying it with a denti-alveolar s and an approximant for the v (pretty much saying sven as a Ukrainian word); or denti-alveolar s and a palatalized v (saying it Russian-style); or saying Swen or Səven in English. I would have to actually practice it many times before I can say it using only English sounds. =Iopq 12:42, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If only I had a microphone I would help you... my name is sven too ^^

Image Issues[edit]

I added an image which I think should be ok re:copyright although it is hard to be entirely sure. I suggest we leave it up unless challenged. This article is in desperate need of an image.

What are your thoughts? —Preceding unsigned comment added by EdTheRiver (talkcontribs) 07:25, January 9, 2006

I don't think fair use can be claimed, see Image talk:Sven2.jpg Qwghlm 09:26, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Where might we go about finding an appropiate image for this page? Would something culled off the FA website be ok? How about the new one up now, this is surely close enough to fair use? The fair use guidelines seem a bit dubious anyways if u ask me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by EdTheRiver (talkcontribs) 09:38, January 9, 2006
Wikipedia:Publicity photos states that publicity images must be explictly designated as such - quote: "Most photos that are found on the Internet are not publicity photos." If there is a press kit section on the FA website, then use the photo from that, but please don't just take any picture, as that will almost certainly be a copyright violation.
PS Please sign your comments when you make them - it's dead easy, just type four tildes (~~~~) and the wiki will do the rest. Qwghlm 13:44, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Swedish nickname[edit]

Well it had to be asked... how does one pronounce "Svennis"? And just why does he have this nickname? Timrollpickering 22:44, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pronounced something like Sven-iss, this nickname for him is very common in Sweden. An english equivalent would be something like "Svennie". 81.235.166.92 10:26, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

POV[edit]

Well there are numerous instances of POV, mainly in the "criticism" section - many statements that are unsourced. In fact, all of the article, except for the extramarital affairs, is unsourced. ugen64 21:34, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have issue with the choice of words talking about the criticism of Eriksson in that what is expressed here is merely the opinion of writers, pundits, and others and must be treated as such in an encyclopedic article. There are many weasel words in this article.

Bouncebackability[edit]

WTF? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.174.232.84 (talk) 19:21, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Bouncebackability" is a term coined by one of the recent Premier League managers - perhaps Steve Coppell or Steve Bruce, I can't remember who exactly - to describe how clubs relegated from the Premier League often get promoted the season after they are relegated due to their hugely increased income due to the parachute payments, i.e. they are given the money to allow them to instantly "bounce back". Somehow, this term was picked up by the press and recognised - I think it may have been added to the Oxford Dictionary or something. In this case, it's being used to highlight how Manchester City have instantly "bounced back" from their low point losing 6-0 to Chelsea. Falastur2 (talk) 16:42, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I believe Iain Dowie is generally credited with coining the word. It is still inappropriate for use in an encyclopedia though, so I have rephrased the sentence. Oldelpaso (talk) 17:02, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bouncebackability was coined by Iain Dowie and actually referred to the ability of a team to bounce back from a setback on the pitch i.e going a goal behind. Spudbynight (talk) 08:55, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mexico[edit]

The news reports that Justino Compean of the Mexican Football Federation is claiming that Eriksson will be the next Mexico manager have resulted in editors adding this as fact. However, Eriksson's agent Athole Still has responded by announcing "There has been no official contact whatsoever. Mr. Eriksson is a contracted employee of Manchester City Football Club. He has not proactively looked for other employment, nor have I. It's all just rumours. Until there is official negotiation or discussion, it's all just hot air." (from [1], among others). This is far from clear cut, and editors should refrain from edits about the Mexico job until the matter is clearer. A couple of weeks ago Portuguese newspapers were reporting that Eriksson was about to be named as Benfica manager, but that did not transpire. This is a similar situation - Eriksson himself has remained silent on the matter. Oldelpaso (talk) 18:20, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh rubbish, come on now, everybody knows Eriksson is Mexico's new manager, for crying out loud! Eriksson himself said he was excited about the job, he said he already reviewed all of the Mexico videos he requested, and he said he is only awaiting to be sworn in! Just look at skysports for proof, honestly know! You wikipedia people sure are stupid, you confuse rumors with facts all the time, especially when it comes to association football. Please respect the game!

He has been confirmed as Mexico's new manager, added citation. Please stop editing the mexico info out. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.171.177.70 (talk) 19:10, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No mention of his personal life[edit]

On the one hand I admire the recognition of professionalism by the authora of this piece in not discussing anything about his personal life, on the other hand I'm trying to find out how to spell his ex girlfriends name Nacy Del Olio (or something). 78.149.214.16 (talk) 00:04, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Professionalism? This article isn't called "The professional career of SGE", therefore the article should include information about his personal life, including Nancy Dell'Olio... --HighKing (talk) 12:48, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

His personal life is very important - he was involved in many high-profile news stories while England manager (e.g. affair with Ulrika Jonsson), and his affair with Faria Alam was a major factor in his dismissal. I can't think of any celebrity of such high-profile on Wikipedia who doesn't have a personal section. 135.196.2.145 (talk) 13:59, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Personal life section is a complete mess. It mentions "Dell'Olio" by surname only, without saying who she was (only this one mention in the entire article. Presumably the result of some poor editing). The rest of the section is badly ordered, and just plain poor. It needs some work.

Real Jaen[edit]

I have just reverted an edit adding managerial statistics for Real Jaén in 1982 citing es.wikipedia. Eriksson has never managed this club - he went straight to Benfica from IFK (see for example the book Sven by Joe Lovejoy). I can only assume this is a hoax edit on es:. In any case, Wikipedias are not suitable for citations. Oldelpaso (talk) 14:42, 19 September 2008 (UTC) What idiot wrote that Javier Agguire was replacing Sven Eriksson? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.148.144.93 (talk) 04:09, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm On Setanta Sports / Special 1 TV[edit]

Somewhere we've got to find a reasonable way to mention IT'S role on I'm On Setanta Sports/Special 1 TV. IT has a very important role on the show. Greg Salter (talk) 05:46, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This article is rubbish, few lines about 20 years of his career (1979-2000) and entire paragraphs about 4 years coaching Enlgand. I need to fix this ASAP. There shoudl be a new voice for Eriksson coaching England —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.149.254.169 (talk) 07:19, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Revert[edit]

I just did quite a big revert here across about half a dozen edits. I'm sorry if I've screwed up but I couldn't understand how this:

  • On 7 September 2005, Eriksson's England team lost a World Cup qualifying match against Northern Ireland 1–0,

had got changed to this:

  • On 7 September 2005, Eriksson led England to a 2-1 victory over Ireland

which, correct me if I'm wrong, contradict each other. This FIFA page says that on 7/9/05 England lost 0-1 to NI so, unless I missed the point - which is not impossible! - it seems that the first one was correct, not the second. There were also a number of issues with the 2-1 version which I felt would need attention anyway, so I hope that under the circumstances this was a reasonable step to take. But if I messed it up, apologies, and please tell me how. I'm also going to have a quick look at the edit history to try and pick up anything useful that I shouldn't have changed. Thanks and best wishes DBaK (talk) 15:06, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • PS It would help quite a lot if edit summaries were used when stuff like this was getting changed. Thanks. DBaK (talk) 15:27, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Age[edit]

If he was born in 1948 as asserted in the opening paragraph how can he have retired at the age of 31 in 1975 as stated in the Playing Career section? Can someone double check the age? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.199.226.58 (talk) 20:17, 1 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

1860 Munich[edit]

It is not clear yet in which capacity SGE will work at 1860 Munich. Isn't it a little premature to name him assistant manager? Cassandro (talk) 20:48, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Personal Life[edit]

Seriously, the exclusion of details of his highly publicised personal life is ridiculous almost to the level of propaganda. This was brought up five years ago and still either nobody's acted on it or someone's removed it because they don't like what they read. It's not derogatory to Sven to report the truth. Someone needs to sort this out ASAP.2.28.162.104 (talk) 13:49, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
