Title[edit]

Current title of this article: The Tales of Hoffmann (-mann)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The Tales of Hoffman (-man) (1951) is a film by the British-based director-writer team of Powell & Pressburger. It is based on the stories of E. T. A. Hoffman (-man), as is the earlier opera Tales of Hoffmann (-mann).

Could we perhaps decide on the spelling (-mann or -man)? I don't like sloppy editing of this sort at all. <KF> 02:54, Jan 10, 2005 (UTC)

Definitely Hoffmann [1]. My initial typo got copied. And if I find sloppy editing I usually fix it myself... Jihg 09:39, Jan 10, 2005 (UTC)

Music play[edit]

who played the Music? is it correct, that it was the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London? and conducted by whom? -- 88.65.34.67 (talk) 20:11, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It played by the RPO and is definitely conducted by Thomas Beecham. In fact, in the link to the Criterion Collection DVD of the opera, there is an essay by Ian Christie in which he states: "The starting point was a proposal by the leading British conductor and impresario Sir Thomas Beecham, who was already a legendary figure in the music world." The music was pre-recorded and the film edited to the music. Viva-Verdi (talk) 20:53, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'll confirm that. Sir Thomas appears at the end as the conductor of the last few bars. It was also Sir Thomas who first suggested making a film of ToH to P&P. He then auditioned all the singers and conducted the orchestra for the pre-recorded score. Steve Crook (Powell and Pressburger Appreciation Society) (talk) 09:51, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
thank you both very much for the answer - 88.65.246.159 (talk) 20:51, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that is clearly Beecham whom you see at the end. That might be an echo of seeing Leopold Stokowski in Disney's Fantasia (1940). Beecham's recording is available on CD and I have now added it to the article.

US spelling[edit]

The article, perhaps a little surprisingly, has employed American spelling since 2006: "skeptical", "honors", and so on.
That is reasonable, and the right of that early author, so I am marking the page as such.
Varlaam (talk) 18:24, 3 February 2012 (UTC) (assuredly not American)[reply]

German language version[edit]

If a German language version of this film exists please supply some references to it. The one reference given refers to a page about a DVD that is no longer available. There are German DVDs of the film with German soundtracks, but when were they recorded? -- SteveCrook (talk) 01:55, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I agree now. There was a 1951 film Hoffmanns Erzählungen, but it seems it was the P/P film in English with a new title for the Germans. The 1970 Hoffmanns Erzählungen was a different production.Apuldram (talk) 11:27, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What was the 1970 version? I see versions of Hoffmanns Erzählungen made in 1911, 1916 & 1923 but not in 1970. Only the 1923 version was based on the Tales by E.T.A. Hoffmann -- SteveCrook (talk) 12:35, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The 1970 film Hoffmanns Erzählungen was produced by de:Walter Felsenstein for the de:Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft with Hanns Nocker as Hoffmann, Melitta Muszely as Olympia, Antonia, Giulietta and Stella, Eva-Maria Baum as Niklas/Muse. Perhaps not on your list because East German. Apuldram (talk) 13:04, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies. Wikipedia has anglicised (redirected) the links I provided. Seek out the German versions.Apuldram (talk)
Thanks -- SteveCrook (talk) 14:17, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's the one I found. Thanks again. Not the Powell & Pressburger film -- SteveCrook (talk) 09:38, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
