The article says Jerry Goldsmith wrote the theme for five Star Trek films. What are they?

well, according to IMDb, the Star Trek films he worked on are:
  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
  • Star Trek: First Contact (1996)
  • Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)
  • Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)
  • Star Trek: The Experience - Borg Invasion 4D (2004)
but there's no need to add that list to the article

Actually, music he had already written was reused for "Borg Invasion," and the fifth Star Trek movie he wrote the music for was Star Trek V, in the late 80s.

OK, let's get this straight. JG wrote the theme for "STTOS", too, & he's best known for that. (OK, he did movie music too...) Trekphiler 02:37, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's wrong, Alexander Courage wrote the TOS theme, not Jerry Goldsmith. Although Goldsmith was active in TV in the 60s he didn't work on the original Star Trek at all.
Yeah I agree.. it was the other way around Alexander Courage's Fanfare was reused by Goldsmith for his Star Trek The Movie Theme and not vice versa. Liver cancer?[edit]

I changed "liver cancer" to "cancer" on the basis of an email saying that the original was wrong. If anyone has a reference for this, perhaps they can add it and replace the "liver"? Thanks -- sannse (talk) 22:02, 20 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Favourite score[edit]

I heard that 'Rudy' was his favourite score from his later period. The article currently says 'Total Recall' has that distinction, can we get sources?

Neutraliy[edit]

List of Films[edit]

Two suggestions[edit]

The ST:TMP score recording is notable for the compression. The bottom frequencies of the score are missing, I believe this was done so as to not compete with the sound effects, which is the CD can be a frustrating listen on higher end sound systems. Anyone who has a bit more knowledge of exactly what was done should add a mention to the Trek section. Secondly, some context would be useful to the career section. Film music underwent fashion changes during the decades long career he had. I think some additional comment about his mature period, in the late 70s-early 90s, when very long scores became the fashion again, could use comment. I remember reading that he lamented the passing of the short score because sometimes a short score was what was needed. ST:TMP/UNCLE comparison[edit]

The article states, without further reference or support, that "The core of the main theme [of Star Trek: the Motion Picture] bears some resemblance to that of The Man from U.N.C.L.E."

As someone quite familiar with both themes, I just don't hear this resemblance at all.

I would like to see a reference to some kind of analysis that supports this claim, otherwise I feel it's just an unsubstantiated opinion that shouldn't be in the article.

I just listened to the MfU theme, and it indeed has a very similar melody to JG's Star Trek theme, although I wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't looking for it, since MfU's melody is done in a rather subdued flute, while ST's is a bassy bombast. I know this subject has been dead for a couple years now, but I'm planning to remove statement altogether. There are some rhythmic comparisons that can be made between the two themes, but not enough similarities to warrant such a mention. If we're going to go around comparing Goldsmith themes, why don't we point out that "Raid on Paradise" from Star Trek V bares similarities to "Attack at the Wall" from Mulan or the theme for Switchblade Sam in Dennis the Menace? James Horner[edit]

The article suggests that James Horner denies having sat on any of Goldsmith's scoring sessions (for Star Trek The Motion Picture), however on the DVD "Star Trek Motion Picture Trilogy" there is a documentary on James Horner, and in that, he states that he indeed did sit in on several of Goldsmith's scoring sessions. Does anybody else think this article is a mess?[edit]

I think it's about time this article is given a full overhaul. It seems like a continuation of interesting points strung together more than a detailed description of his life and career. Am I alone here? The list of References is shamefully small, too. Somebody sound off and give me your thoughts. Okay, I just rewrote the "Early life and education" section; deleted some un-cited, out of place information; finished the new "1960s" and "1970s" sections (well, not all of the 1970s); and I'll move to the 80s and 90s tomorrow. What needs to be done now...[edit]

I think the Film and television scoring section is pretty solid, though the 1950s, 1980s, and 2000s could probably use some expansion. What we really need now are Personal life and death (could be broken into two sections), Non-film compositions (probably with a better title), and perhaps Influence on other composers sections. We will definitely need some quality sources for these sections as the article in its previous state had none. If anybody's out there, chime in and say something. Christus Apollo[edit]

No mention his Christus Apollo (1969), a cantata setting of a text by sci-fi author Ray Bradbury scored for narrator, mezzo-soprano, chorus and orchestra. Nor his 12-tone piece Music for Orchestra (1970) or his 1999 Fireworks. Glad you brought it up, we do need to include "Christus Apollo" and others from that album into Other Work (a name change of that section might also be appropriate). I've been mainly expanding Film and television scoring section, gutting the Miscellaneous section, and trying to work my way down through Work on Star Trek and other (in my opinion) very poorly written sections, so "Christus Apollo" hasn't been immediately in my sights. What we need for those compositions are some good sources, if available. I'll check the disk for any liner notes and use those if possible, but I'm beginning to become a bit irked by the fact that I'm the only one doing any valuable repairs to this article, despite the fact it was lying in a state of disarray with little improvements for years before my overhaul. Work still needed[edit]

I think it would be fair to say that this is one of the best looking film music related articles on Wikipedia, but some things still need work. The 1950s, 1960s, and 1980s sections are all in need of some minor expansion, but I think most of our action should be directed towards the meager Personal life section, the empty Musical influence section, and the List of films and series section, which I've recently found to be lacking a number of titles. Jerry Goldsmith's Personal Assistant, Lois Carruth[edit]

Lois Carruth was a very close friend of mine during the final decade of her life. She passed away October 2, 2015. Lois was Jerry Goldsmith's personal assistant, and is credited by name on many of his CDs.

Over the years, she shared numerous personal stories about working with Jerry Goldsmith. Perhaps some of this information may be of interest to Wikipedia to include in the area of Jerry's personal life.

Lois managed Jerry's schedule, and also became his sounding-board, due to her long history in sound editing and music. She was the wife of sound editor Richard Carruth, and they collaborated on three films for Norman Jewison, including "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Jesus Christ Superstar." She was credited by the name of Lois La Salle, her maiden name before she married Richard. Lois met Jerry on his first day of scoring "Planet Of The Apes." At that time she was working for Lionel Newman in the music department at Fox. Many years later, when his personal assistant retired and he was looking for a replacement, he hired Lois.

On the day that they first met, Jerry asked Lois if she could obtain an ape mask for him to wear the first time that he walked before the studio orchestra. She went to John Chambers' makeup department, and Chambers happily gave her a mask for Jerry to wear. It made a big hit with the orchestra, and Jerry never forgot Lois!

Jerry did all of his scoring in his residence, and Lois worked closely with him there every day.

About once every month, Jerry would invite two of his best friends over to his home for lunch, and Lois was always included in these special meetings. His friends were comedians Ronnie Schell and Harvey Korman!

I don't know if Wikipedia has any interest in these items, but I wanted to share this information.

Citation fixes[edit]

Part of the page reads: "In an interview with Andy Velez from BarnesandNoble.com, Goldsmith stated..."

I think the contributor means to make an inline citation to a video on the website mentioned, however the "BarnesandNoble.com" is an internal wikilink to the page Barnes and Noble

I am not sure how to fix citation issues. Is there a WP: essay that provides an introduction to wiki citation policy?

Opening of article[edit]

Can someone clean out all that stuff about fanfares and move it to somewhere more appropriate within the article? It's far to specific for the opening of an article and is a confusing mess, besides. 98.13.3.175 (talk) 23:54, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Copied some text into Star Trek: Ultimate Voyage show page[edit]

I wanted to let everyone know that I copied text from this page into Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage concert series which featured a lot of his music in a live performance setting.
