Balanced Point of View[edit]

The external link providing a token amount of balance was removed. It provided some mild criticism and history surrounding Segway's somewhat difficult beginnings, compiled by the Wall Street Journal: Segway's Timeline If there are no objections, or if nobody wishes to create a small section to highlight useful information from the article, I'll add it back to the external links. It would probably be best if a new section to the Segway article was made, as mentioned on this talk page. Thanks. --Dulcimerist (talk) 23:55, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

When looking at the external link you've provided, I noticed that the article mentions the pre-release hype but neglects the disappointing sales and famous Segway-related accidents. I also found the article too technical and slightly biased. While including a "Criticism" section might make the article imbalanced, stating the critical responses of Segway (views of advocates of Segway and opponents to Segway) should make the article more objective. The external link given may be a good start, but more is needed. 183.178.192.88 (talk) 02:55, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your input. I also see that the article I linked to no longer has valid links to its source articles, which were key to it being useful. Would using it as an external link still be useful? I like your suggestion of stating critical responses in the existing sections, rather than creating a specific section for all criticisms. I wouldn't consider the differing views of to be described as advocates and opponents of Segway, but rather as the successes and shortcomings of Segway. It would be good to see a section with sales information over the years, even if it's just the sales figures with no additional comment. This article might be able to borrow some ideas from the Edsel article. --Dulcimerist (talk) 06:46, 28 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikicensored, Promotional Article[edit]

Nothing about the company's bankruptcy, sale, and the death of the guy who bought it. He ran his Segway off a cliff on his estate. But Wikipedia mentions none of it, because Wikipedia is censored, especially when corporate promotion is involved. 71.227.188.49 (talk) 21:00, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This article is about the vehicle itself, nothing at all to do with the company. If you want to read and learn about the company, see Segway Inc.. Steve Lux, Jr. (talk) 21:59, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps the death by Segway could be added because it was a notable death? http://www.nbcnews.com/id/39377851/ns/world_news-europe/t/segway-company-owner-rides-scooter-cliff-dies/ and listed on Wikipedia here: Deaths_in_September_2010#26. The articles for car, motorcycle, skateboarding mention "deaths", bicycle only mentions accident and injury not deaths, skateboard, roller skates, inline skates do not mention deaths. Additionally, several of those have Safety sections, so that could be added as well (e.g. https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/30/tech/segway-history/index.html mentions Segway safety). Looks like a judgment call. Tantek (talk) 20:42, 3 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Similar to devices[edit]

Does anyone know what is the general term for this item that is similar to Segway PT but smaller and lighter and without its pole and its accompanying handle bars? Should that be called self-balancing portable eletric dicycle? If yes, is it possible to have an article about that item in Wikipedia? Here is a picture of it. Max speed typo/error fix maybe mistaken[edit]

I just found that the max speed conversion template had been messed up; it read "conver20.205. I assume it had said "convert|20.205" before and someone had accidentally deleted two characters, but I'm not positive. I changed it back, assuming that "20.205mph" was correct, but I have no idea if it actually is, or why they felt they had to add the ".205", since the speed really varies a great deal based on passenger weight and battery charge, etc.AnnaGoFast (talk) 21:21, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

AnnaGoFast, I fixed the speed issue. Thanks for notifying! Steve Lux, Jr. (talk) 13:18, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

United States Formatting[edit]

The formatting in the United States section seems really messed up like someone didn't really know how to do citations but wanted to add a run-down on the history of Segways use in America. Someone might want to clean that up. –Jumper4677 (talk) 22:23, 28 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. I have done a cleanup pass of the section. It was indeed in a mess. PeterEastern (talk) 20:11, 11 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Trimming back bulk from article[edit]

Just to note that I am in the process of trimming back some of the bulk which to my mind risks obscuring the more notable content. Happy to talk about it here is you think I am being too harsh or not harsh enough. PeterEastern (talk) 20:03, 11 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal to reduce scope of 'Use and regulation by country' section[edit]

Would it be appropriate to trim out the usage information from this section and limit it to the legality of using the device? If so, then would it also be appropriate to merge most of the content into the regulatory section of the personal transporter article (which is broader class of vehicles into which the Segway PT fits for a regulatory perspective). Thoughts? I will leave 7 days at least before acting on this proposal for any discussion. PeterEastern (talk) 20:08, 11 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Do it. It seems that this section has grown too much within this article anyway. Steve Lux, Jr. (talk) 20:54, 11 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for the prompt response. Appreciated. (but will still wait for 7 days+ for other comments) PeterEastern (talk) 21:34, 11 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have now completed this trim and move into the regulatory section of the personal transporter article . PeterEastern (talk) 07:30, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No mention of Jimi Heselden?[edit]

This section was originally titled 'That Peter Eastern guy removed all traces of Jimi Heselden from the article. He probably works for Segway or something.'

It's stupid that there is absolutely no mention of Jimi Heselden or his death on the main Segway page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.7.48.10 (talk) 14:47, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Err... I don't work for Segway and never have and don't know anyone who does or ever has done. Jimi Heselden is still mentioned in the history section of the article Segway Inc. which is about the company but is not mentioned here because he isn't notable in relation to the device itself in my view. (I am removed the potentially libellous heading from this talk section but recorded it within the body. I am happy with that.) PeterEastern (talk) 14:45, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Segway PTSegwayWP:COMMONNAME, WP:TWODABS, WP:PRIMARYTOPIC – As far as I know, practically no one calls it a "Segway PT", and the target name has redirected to this topic for more than four years. —BarrelProof (talk) 06:07, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well I don't even think we need the DAB page since all the other titles (intitle:Segway) refer to these topics and the manufacturer is mentioned at the top of the PT article anyway. As far as I can see the company's website title (and most other sources, example) appear indeed to call it just "Segway" but do also say "Segway PT" and "Segway Personal Transport". However its difficult to tell if these are referring to the company of transporter. Crouch, Swale (talk) 07:13, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT working well here. But if we're making the title ambiguous and removing PT, then we'll need a hatnote for Segway Inc. In ictu oculi (talk) 08:44, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    • PRIMARYREDIRECT is not working well here. Redirecting the COMMONNAME to an obscure title almost nobody uses is not "working". Just in case there is any question, the device dominates the company in page views [2] --В²C 18:04, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
