Techno[edit]

Not that I have listened to any of her music, but I am fairly confident she hasn't got anything to do with techno. I agree. Not like I'm a huge fan of techno, but it's bad that people still thinks that "electronic music with 4/4 kickdrum" = "techno". Even if you bring up dozens of sources for what it is, they still editing it back to techno in articles like this. --TaZaR 23:51, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Discography[edit]

Violin Price[edit]

Is there a strange property of violins that they gain value when they're broken?

She once fell and broke the Guadagnini, but then it was pieced back together, giving it a current price tag of almost half a million USD.

That's ~200USD more than it was worth before. Is this a mistake or am I ignorant? Did they use platinum duct tape? Either way: citation needed. Alex Dodge (talk) 01:56, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Currency: change to US dollars (Her violins)[edit]

I see User:TJRC has been changing GBP to US dollars, despite the reference itself being uncited. I don't understand that. Elsewhere the article is GBP (US dollars in parentheses). Here's where I'm coming from: the valuation was added in this edit, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Vanessa-Mae&diff=prev&oldid=201986954 , by User:Bohdanmaks. The valuation was "almost half a million USD." That same edit added the auction price of "£150,000". Now, let's assume that Bohdanmaks was basing this edit on reliable sources (which may be questionable). These are two different things. One is a purchase price of the violin, which was in pounds. If that transaction was actually in pounds, it should be reported as pounds. The other event is someone somewhere appraising the violin, and appraising it at "almost half a million USD." That is, the appraisal was in dollars, and was not made in pounds. Currency conversion valuations are not constant, and we should not be converting one currency into another. It adds inaccuracy to an already sloppy passage.
If the appraisal was made, for example, by a U.S. insurance company, and was made in dollars, that's how it was valued. If you want to convert that to pounds, what exchange rate do you propose to use? The one in place today, in August 2008? The one in place when the appraisal was made? When was that?
This is not an issue of keeping British spelling or American spelling consistent in an article. I'm all for that. This is about avoiding fact drift.
On the actual subject of the violin's value, a google search turns up the article cited at http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract;jsessionid=3976CF427912A779299B4F75917D5350.tomcat1?fromPage=online&aid=1034948 "International Journal of Cultural Property (1995), 4: 347-368 Cambridge University Press doi:10.1017/S094073919500035X". The google hits list includes a snippet that doesn't show up from this unpaid preview: "1761 Guadagnini violin worth £180000 stolen from the home of. Vanessa-Mae Nicholson, 16 year old regarded as one of the world's ..." If someone, perhaps a university student with access to a good library, has access to the text of the article (I'm not willing to cough up the $10 for a Wikipedia edit), this could be a nice reference to establish a source and value. New album[edit]

Vanessa-Mae announced in 2006 that she would be releasing a new album sometime between 2007 and 2008. The album was said to draw inspiration from great ballets and opera themes. A new album was expected in 2009,[3] but the year ended without the expected release.

Only individual to both compete, and have her music used, at Olympics?[edit]

I haven't seen this noted in any reporting yet, but as far as I know, Vanessa-Mae is the only individual who has both participated in an Olympics competition and had her music featured in an Olympic competition. Shizuka Arakawa won the gold medal in 2006 skating to V-M's rendition of Violin Fantasy on Puccini's Turandot.

Interestingly, Julia Lipnitskaia skated to a Vanessa-Mae piece, Sabre Dance, for the Closing Gala at the 2014 European Figure Skating Championships ([1]); I wonder if she'll use it here.

It was removed in this edit apparently for not being sourced. The Straits Times says "Mae Vanakorn Nicholson", assuming they didn't take it from Wikipedia, which happens a lot for these kinds of stories. Telegram also: "Vanessa, whose full name is Vanessa-Mae Vanakorn Nicholson"; but this seems to have included an interview with the woman herself, so it is less likely to be citogenesis. Yeah, those skiing controversies should be trimmed down radically. Regarding her career, it does seem to have faded away since she stopped recording (no new album since 2004 per Vanessa-Mae discography). Looks like she performs occasional concerts these days: 4-5 dates per year in 2017–2018 ([2]).
