Just to fill you in, regarding your talk page comments from a couple of months ago at Talk:Alexander Wood (merchant): per the Dictionary of Canadian Biography entry, I was able to confirm that whoever originally added that statement simply linked to the wrong John Beverley Robinson in error; his father, Sir John Robinson, 1st Baronet, of Toronto, also has the middle name Beverley, was born in 1791 and already had a close professional association with William Dummer Powell even though he wasn't actually a political officeholder yet. I'm an English teacher, and holder of a degree in language, including linguistics, grammar, phonetics and phonology and semantics in three languages. Not many people here could easily teach me a thing or two about the English language. As for being a "chestnut" ("an old or stale joke" -- Collins; "a subject, idea, or joke that has been discussed or repeated so often that it is not funny any more" -- Cambridge), it's no joke, and never has been. Einollen

Many thanks for your extensive notes on Einollen. I have tracked down my ancestors to this area. They came to Australia in the 1850's and I hope to visit Einollen in the next few weeks looking for traces of them (Werner and Schuster). I was a bit depressed to see that the only famous person from the area was a Nazi rascist called Hermann Gauch! Is that the best the area can offer? Camerojo (talk) 07:02, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

(Not sure if this is where I should post my reply). My ancestor, Jacob Werner, was indeed a musician. He was in the Bavarian army but deserted, eventually making his way to Liverpool where he signed on as musician on a ship to Australia in 1855. He was born in Oberweiler-Tiefenbach (and it seems I have you to thank for that page as well!) in 1829. He and other members of his family were christened in the church of Einollen. I was hoping to find some birth/christening and other records in Einollen and Oberweiler-Tiefenbach - perhaps also some gravestones or cemetery records. Also I am interested in tracking down any remote cousins - descendants of those Werners who may have stayed in the region.

You name the mayors of the villages. I was thinking of trying to contact them before we go by means of an email in German, but not sure how best to reach them. Do you think that is a good idea? I presume you also have some connection with the area - is that the case?

Autism as a mental disorder

I don't consider autism to be a disorder of any kind, being a person who is autistic. However, the DSM considers autism to be one. To be specific, they merged classical, Asperger's and PDD-NOS into one. I received a diagnosis of ASD and ADHD under the DSM-5. Besides, even if the DSM didn't consider it be a mental disorder, most people do and that is why neurodiversity activists are fighting against.

Gundagai diacritic

While you have fixed a diacritic, that didn't really need fixing, as it is covered by the disam page already in place, so while your talk page is littered with examples of not using disam pages, you have correctly fixed one, even though the Wp page on disam says to not only just fix one if that's all you're doing. I have no idea what the point of your message is, but my insertion of an umlaut was one of several edits I did yesterday at various articles as part of a housekeeping sweep that I do every now and then to deal with lazy users who couldn't be bothered to put the umlaut in the name Köppen; "Koppen" is simply wrong. His name was Köppen; he pronounced it like that. I'll just repeat the message that I commonly put in the summary slot when I do this: Diacritics matter. And they do, too. I just noticed your recent edit to Collingwood, Queensland and was surprised to see NbW etc as directions. After some searching I found its meaning. I'm not sure how many people use this form in Australian English (I did a bit of a search and could not find any examples of it, but then I can't find Australian documents that use 32 compass points for any purpose). I'm not disputing that it's the right name, but as a piece of terminology that nobody seems to use (e.g. most references to NbW on Wikipedia aare to Nebelwerfer weapon model numbers), I'm just not sure what use it is to the readers. Maybe if you linked any of these "by" directions to Points of the compass#32-wind compass points, it would at least help the reader figure it out. But looking at the table, I honestly think you could just approximate them to the better known 16 compass points, e.g. Albrighton appears to be NNW to my eye. By the way, you mention that the Bing maps shows the streets in Collingwood. It doesn't show all of them. If you want to see the streets and the individual land parcels that were surveyed for the town (which all still exist as it seems nobody's bothered to aggregate them), you need to download the Queensland Globe (which is just a tiny XML file) and open it from within Google Earth. Then turn on the Land Parcel Boundaries in the Layers menu (left-side bar) on Google Earth. Details are here. It's *the* tool for anyone working with Qld geography; I have it running all the time when I am working on Wikipedia. The only problem is that while the Qld Globe layers are CC-BY, the underlying imagery is copyright, so you can't take screenshots for use on Wikipedia (which is a great pity). Thank-you very much for your recent edits to Bruce McArthur! I have comments on a few of your choices. BTW, I'd wanted to avoid being overly formal with the language and was trying to stick with plain English for the average reader.

• strangling → throttling. I feel that strangling might be an easier word for most readers.
• because her data were academic Here I felt data is used as a mass noun and unquantifiable (like water), and that treating it as a singular works better.
• told him that that was no place to be gay I'll think about a rephrase to avoid that that.
• who → whom. There is a movement in plain English to do away with whom. I don't particularly care for that, but it apparently confuses some readers.
• I don't think there's any reason to replace html entities (eg: –) with unicode characters.
• excavating at 3 properties → three. Normally small numbers are expressed as words instead of numerals. One of the exceptions to this is when numbers may be compared, in which case numbers should all be in the same format (words or numerals). That paragraph has other numbers (30, 75, 100) which the 3 could be compared to. So I feel it's better to have it as a numeral.
• most prolific known serial killer. You removed a hyphen in most-prolific. This is a compound modifier and MOS recommends hyphenating these for clarity. I feel the hyphenated version is less demanding on the reader. Serial killer might also be hyphenated but I think most readers are familiar with that term. It may be more obvious with male sex worker which is ambiguous without the hyphen. (Is it a male prostitute, or a "worker" who is of the "male sex"?)
• amyl nitrate -Should this read "nitrite"?- One source says to possess amyl nitrates or "poppers," another took poppers, amyl nitrate, though I see the Wikipedia article says it belongs to a class called "alkyl nitrites" which I take to be an over-encompassing chemical group.
• cafe → café I would rather not use accents on loanwords. I don't believe there is any confusion to what a cafe (unaccented) is.
• f-- fa-ots → fucking fagots. The Bowdlerism is part of a published quote and I feel that it should be reproduced as published.

Hi - I'm kind of baffled as to why you've changed "after the war" to "post-war" in every single circumstance over at Geisha with the reasoning "this isn't an office memo" and "cut the cool dude talk"?

For want of a better word (ha!), it seems snipey and to be honest, just kind of pointless. I'd get changing it in some circumstances for variety, but I can't say I've ever seen anyone call "after the war" "cool dude talk" - as in, too informal, too conversational. I'm just saying - I appreciate people helping out with the Japanese arts and culture articles, as sometimes it does feel like just me sweeping them up and rewriting them, but for the future, you don't have to go in so hard on a few grammar issues. It is not an "edit war", Chaheel, it is an attempt to remove crappy pretentious pseudo-French rubbish from WP, and there is no reason why anybody should be forbidden to do that. The term "nom de plume" is not used by educated French speakers — and come to that, nor by educated English speakers, who recognize it for the pretentious guff that it is. The French word is le pseudonyme. Je devrais mentionner que mes connaissances de la langue française sont assez avancées ! And my knowledge of English is likewise so. All that the inclusion of "nom de plume" in that article that you own shows is that you do not speak French, and have a very tenuous grip on English usage. The term "nom de plume" was invented in England (that's right, not France or any other French-speaking place) in the 19th century and used by those who wished to appear cultured, and they did, too — to those who knew no better. It is a substandard usage in both English and French, and I treat it as I would any usage of "ain't". Now, please explain why you think that "nom de plume" should be retained in that article? Given the large number of changes you've made, I suspect a discussion should be here as a resource for all the other editors who may be trying to figure out what is going on. The earliest reference in the Oxford English Dictionary is 1841 and it quotes sources like the Daily Telegraph (a conservative British newspaper) in 1991. Pen name is actually a more recent word dating to 1864 and a back formation. Nom de plume is an English coining. The apparent earlier French language phrase for the same thing is nom de guerre (though as others have pointed out nom de plume seems to be in French now also). Pocket Fowler's has "A nom de plume (also in translated form pen-name) is a name assumed by an author to appear on the title-page of a book; a pseudonym is a name assumed more generally although this too is normally applied in authorial contexts." Continuing from here, some noms de plume or nom de plumes (with my emboldening) for your delectation:

Davey was published by Scribner's, for a general readership. Provision of sorts for accented letters was considerably more of a pain for letterpress printing than inserting them is today, so it was common for non-academic books to dispense with such niceties. Yes, famous (or merely proficient) writers do indeed on occasion get it wrong; but when so many use a term that escapes alteration by the proofreaders and copyeditors of their reputable publishers, I'd infer that the term is well-formed within the particular language (here, English). I'm afraid it's as sourced as the original German article. I gathered that the sources for all the information are in the "Further reading" section (called "Literatur" in German). Now, I think that those are both paper books, and I wouldn't know how to cite chapter and page, as I have no idea how to get hold of them. They are not likely to be widely available outside Germany, I wouldn't think (I'm not even in Europe). The original writer (much of whose text still seems to stand after 11 years) on de:WP was Radiojunkie. He/She is still active, having made edits less than a week ago. He/She named those two books under "Literatur" even back then. Perhaps somebody will have to ask him/her to be a bit thorougher in his/her attribution. I have also put a message on the new article's Talk page:

The source is unconsequential. As a user-generated source, no version of Wikipedia is a reliable source. This is explained in WP:RSPRIMARY ("Wikipedia articles (and Wikipedia mirrors) in themselves are not reliable sources for any purpose") and WP:USERGENERATED (Content from websites whose content is largely user-generated is generally unacceptable. Sites with user-generated content include personal websites, personal and group blogs (excluding newspaper and magazine blogs), content farms, Internet forums, social media sites, fansites, video and image hosting services, most wikis and other collaboratively created websites". Wikipedia is not perfect, but it should not go backwards. Unsourced or undersourced articles should improve its verifiability with reliable sources. You added content without providing a reliable source and furthermore, you hijacked the citation of a reliable source (WP:HIJACK). All in all, the table (as in originated in es.wikipedia or wherever it came from) should not be handled as a reliable source. At best, you can consider it as a "skeleton" to actually fill with reliable sources. your userpage calls you a "pretentious twat". I've been called many things on here. You did hijack citation #21, as that citation is presumed to verify the content to its left and the reliable source does not mention any name for the role Itziar Castro plays in the film. Please read WP:HIJACK. I am certainly persuaded to remove many rows of the table as they seem to be non-notable appearances (and a large chunk of them in non-notable works). I am not inclined to remove them just because they are unsourced. I prefer to look out for reliable sources (for those that seem plausibly sourceable) instead. It is perfectly clear. The subject of the article was never en route to becoming a cardiologist; so it must have been her sister.

I am so sorry that you are not interested. The thing is, though, that you must be. I think you reverted the above just because you wanted to evade those first two points more than anything. I notice that you didn't address them in your response. I notice, too, that you didn't address my point that "women" was the term otherwise used throughout that article, either. By the way, I have checked several other articles about female reproductive organs and female physiology, and they all use "woman" and "women" throughout. If you were sincere about furthering some worthy goal here on WP, I rather think that you would have done a thorougher job. I am also not too sure that you are not violating WP:SOAP — but perhaps that's debatable. You have furthermore done nothing to make me think better of referring the matter of your behaviour to another administrator. About the addition of maps in Penang

Hey there. Regarding the map that you added in Penang, I'll have to disagree. It simply doesn't depict anything more than a blank raw map, there was no additional information from it & up to yesterday, that map along with several other images were causing MOS:SANDWICH. In fact, one could just as easily open up OSM & get the same viewpoint, but with enhanced functionalities (rather than attaching a raw OSM map that just appears repetitive to the location map within the same section).

In fact, there had been previous discussions about the article when nominating it for GA. One sticking point was the excess images in the article. WP isn't a repository, and there should have been greater prudence in adding images, charts or maps into the article so as to ensure relevance and remaining pertinent to the prose (and not adding repetitive maps which add little to what has been already present).

Maybe a wider discussion could be initiated so as to determine the consensus for this OSM map you're adding? hundenvonPG (talk) 09:35, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
