RfC concerning whether or not to use "Mainland China"[edit]

Chipmunkdavis and I have different opinions on whether or not to use "Mainland China" in the article (see the above thread for further information). We would request a neutral, third-party opinion on the issue. --HypVol (talk) 16:14, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is not the issue, the issue in question is this edit, specifically the replacement of China with Mainland China within the bulleted lists of the infobox/lead, along with the removal of the text "(a name resulting from PRC influence on the bank)" in a section on naming terminology. Suggest closing this, and asking at WP:3O if you want a third opinion. CMD (talk) 16:23, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The replacement was due to MOS:NC-CN, the Manual of Style that is a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow. Plus, I know WP:3O, but the process of RfC is generally faster and can engage in more third-party editors. --HypVol (talk) 16:34, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(summoned by the feedback request service) Would it be too unwieldy to use the full People's Republic of China term as mentioned at WP:NC-CN? Would think that would remove any ambiguity. Since I doubt those trading stats are excluding Hong Kong and Macau, if they are that is a different question. SamStrongTalks (talk) 17:40, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's a little bit over-verbose..but yes, I think the trading stats do in fact exclude Hong Kong and Macau; at least Hong Kong, which is listed separately as a trading partner. Firejuggler86 (talk) 23:49, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Use People's Republic of China Let me set up an idea, all articles related to the People's Republic of China replace China with People's Republic of China.Because we can't be sure whether China refers to Republic of China or People's Republic of China.--36.232.246.234 (talk) 18:08, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Use mainland China - CMD's notion that anyone could possibly be confused over the meaning of "mainland China" - in an article about Taiwan - is not even remotely reasonable. Nor is "mainland China" POV: both Taiwan and the PRC consider Taiwan to be the same country as mainland China. They disagree only on who ought be running it. Mainland China is still mainland China, and while just "China" is fine in most contexts, when being discussed alongside Hong Kong and Taiwan, it isn't. Firejuggler86 (talk) 23:44, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • With regards to "both Taiwan and the PRC consider Taiwan to be the same country as mainland China", I don't think so. As a wikipedian from Taiwan, I know many peoples in Taiwan consider Taiwan is a country, not the same countary as mainland China.--Wolfch (talk) 23:10, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Use Mainland China with reference to Taiwan to refer to the large area of eastern Asia that is governed by the People's Republic of China. What is the question? Robert McClenon (talk) 21:26, 4 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Use mainland China, per Firejuggler86 and Robert McClenon above. Idealigic (talk) 16:16, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Use mainland China - I have to assume the dispute stems from the fact both Taiwan and China claim rights to mainland China, and both threaten to invade the other and restore the 'true' China. That said, the phrase "mainland China" is still a definable geographical area and has been throughout history, so there should be no issue using it in the article. Mainland China is part of the People's Republic of China. If you a referring to the country as a whole, the latter is more correct, but if you are referring to the geographic mainland of China (which seems to be the case in this article's uses of the phrase), obviously the former is more correct. ––FORMALDUDE(talk) 04:16, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • It depends on the context, if the fact or figure includes HK and Macao then we should say PRC but if it is specifically talking about China except for HK and Macao then mainland China does fit out current manual of style. Horse Eye's Back (talk) 05:25, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
