Jane Pinheiro died October 14, 1978, twenty-six ago, after providing outstanding community service in the Antelope Valley, CA for thirty-five years. There are still a few folks who remember Jane Pinheiro and her accomplishments but certainly Jane Pinheiro has not been receiving the recognition that she deserves.

PR/MDIA has created a Jane Pinheiro Project Committee that has adopted the following as its mission statement

“MAKE JANE PINHEIRO’S ARTISTIC WORKS PART OF THE RECOGNIZED AND EASILY ATTAINABLE OVERALL HISTORY”

This may be more easily said than done but we have a few ideas that include:

Make a variety of cards displaying Jane Pinheiro drawings available to the public. A few of Jane Pinheiro’s drawings have been on display at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, however many if not most have been in storage for over 20 years.

Make Jane Pinheiro’s name more current. A query at the local Lancaster library yields little information, the Palmdale library has two references, an internet search found scant references.

It has come to our attention that the California State Library has organized to grant funds to California Non Profit Organizations that have qualifying projects. It is our intention to submit a working paper describing a Jane Pinheiro project. If the grant making review committee agrees then we would submit a grant proposal.

We could describe several products that could be created using grant monies. One could be educational material that could be used in California classrooms. Another could be a book including Jane Pinheiro data and showcasing her drawings. The more I think about it the more I am keen on a book. The reason is that a book could be distributed by or acknowledged by the California State Library, which would give the book stature within the library community. The book would have a greater chance of being held by libraries thereby available to researchers.

Can we do it? We certainly are going to give it our best. Do you want to help? If yes, you can join our committee and indicate your level of involvement and /or you could donate money specifically to this project. As it happens the grant is a matching grant on a $1 to $1 basis. The rules are PR/MDIA must spend its money first then the grant will / may reimburse. The grant will not reimburse all costs.

As you know the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve dedicated its visitor center to Jane Pinheiro . However Jane Pinheiro was part of many other community activities within the Antelope Valley. If you have personal knowledge of Jane Pinheiro or of her drawings we would like to hear from you. Address all letters to
