Coul I get a reference for the meaning of the name? My own name is Olivier, which is french for olive-tree. I wonder if this is just a coincidence, or if they are totally unrelated name with the same pronunciation. But i am stupid

Oliver is also a surname. I don't know much about that, but it isn't all that uncommon either.--Gangster Octopus 17:56, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Meaning: "Pie"?[edit]

Is this some vandalism that's slipped by unnoticed? The article says it is related to olive branches and to olaf meaning ancestor, nowhere is pie mentioned. As an Oliver I hope that my name does not carry the meaning of a delicious pastry based foodstuff. If noone responds I'll replace it with the meanings stated in the article at some point until someone finds a source that it means pie. I'm pretty sure this is vandalism, but its been there for a few edits. Thanks Olliemilne 03:26, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I found the edit where it occured, and the particular IP did nothing but spam articles related to Oliver and the word "pie" on various pages, so yeah it was vandalism that slipped through. I changed it to the meanings given in the article. Olliemilne 03:31, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Worldwide breakdown of 'Olivers'?[edit]

Wondering where the most Olivers are…the only country where it seems to be somewhat common in my experience is Germany (unless you count France and Olivier), but in the U.S. people generally seem to assume it signifies Englishness. Is there such a thing anywhere as a database of given names categorized according to country? I would bet the majority of Olivers in the world are in Germany (followed by U.K./Ireland).Critic9328 (talk) 19:54, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The most Olivers are in United Kingdom, then France, and Ireland for Europe; not in Germany, nearly 150 people with this name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.145.13.10 (talk) 21:52, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

list of people with the given name Oliver[edit]

Per WP:NOTDIRECTORY this list of people with the first name Oliver should be gotten rid of. There are literally thousands of notable people with that first name. It would be as ridiculous as listing every person named John in the John article. The list of people with the Oliver surname is different. Firstly, there are far less people with the surname Oliver, than with the given name Oliver, making the list somewhat manageable. Secondly, and more importantly, the justification for having the surname list is that people who are looking for someone specific and can't remember the first name of the person, will find the person through the list. However, it is far less probable that someone would remember the first name of a person and forget the last name of a person. --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 04:13, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This isn't a list of people with the first name Oliver it is a list of people with the Oliver surname. My only suggestion is that it should exclude those without a WP article. --hydnjo talk 01:55, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
