Fictional racist?[edit]

Why is Frank Burns considered a fictional racist? He was never shown as a racist, at least not in the series. Could someone show some citation for that? --Victor 07:22, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In "Springtime" he trys to order a shell shocked soldier to give up an "Unauthorized cat"!!

Plot Holes[edit]

Depending on the epsiode and writer various contradictory stories about Major Burns life:

In one early epsiode he claims he can't marry HOulihan because he's not rich enough to afford a wife and a ex-wife, yet in another he boasts of belonging to a Country Club, and owning a $30,000.00 house, two cars and a 30 foot yacht!
In one epsiode he claims to have been a doctor for 12 years {1950/1951-12=1938/1939} thus he would have been subject to the draft for World War II-yet in "The Novacine Mutiny" he wears only Korean war medal ribbons!

I don't agree that these are plot holes. We can say that he had enough money, but that it a personal judgement. If I recall correctly, some of his assets were in his wife's name. Also, just because he would have been old enough for the WWII draft doesn't mean that he would have been drafted. Homophobic?[edit]

The comment that Frank Burns "was very homophobic" is an extremely liberal bias POV. There was absolutely nothing that Burns said or did in the episode in question (2.22-"George") that was not mainstream among US Army personnel during the Truman administration. In fact, it's very common even today among US Army personnel. Don't get me wrong, I'm a liberal myself, but that episode was probably about as anachronistic as any episode in American TV history. Not a good argument, IMO. The fact that people were less aware of homophobia fifty years ago doesn't mean it didn't exist, or that we shouldn't identify it as such. The fact, if it indeed is a fact, that US Army personnel today tend to be homophobic is an even weaker argument against calling this what it is. Departure[edit]

Something has been bothering me recently about the departure of Frank Burns. According to Potter he was being treated for psychiatric trouble due to his breakdown, yet somehow after that he is cleared of all charges, promoted, AND sent back to the states... I highly doubt that. More importantly Burns told this to hawkeye himself over the phone. Now I'm just a little curious... Did that promotion acctully happen, or was that what frank was made to believe to cover another fate.
