Name[edit]

It would appear that Miami Beach is on an island. But what is the name of the island?

The island's name is the same as the city - Miami Beach, just like Key West. - Marc Averette 17:49, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Art Deco District?[edit]

What about the Art Deco District? There's nothing about it in this article yet...

Added Art Deco District section.
Added link to Art Deco Weekend article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Editor99 (talkcontribs) 16:20, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Post Holocaust[edit]

The "Post Holocaust" section doesn't even mention the Holocaust. Either the section should tie Miami Beach to the Holocaust, or if the link is not firm enough then that section heading is inappropriate. (Sobesurfski 15:44, 12 June 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Picture[edit]

The picture that represents Miami Beach is not very good; it should be more like the one on Los Angeles. --MosheA 01:11, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV[edit]

I added the NPOV-template because of many unsourced claims. Sentences like "During the winter season of January to March, celebrities, fashion models and wealthy Europeans make the city a second home, and rates at some of the best hotels can be astronomical." without any sources seem to be original research to me. History[edit]

Article needs more on the history of Miami Beach, with a history section. -- Infrogmation 20:28, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Images[edit]

Article had a huge pile of indiscriminate images in a gallery, the majority without even any description. I slashed it ruthlessly. If someone wishes to take time for a more careful and considered selection of photos, they are certainly welcome to. However recall that Wikipedia articles should not be galleries of large numbers of images. The gallery of additional images can easily be found on the Commons link, which is where most or all the images belong. -- Infrogmation 20:28, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well done. Even though you took out one of mine, I don't mind. I was meaning to heavily prune it myself. It was one on my long list of WP things to do. -- Alexf(t/c) 21:27, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can we please find some photos of some goodlooking Miami Beach women instead of those horrible pictures?!?!? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.185.60.226 (talk) 01:50, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Miami Beach: ISLAND[edit]

It is not a peninsula.....Haulover cut is artificial? So what? The fact is: today Miami Beach is an ISLAND......201.29.193.228 (talk) 05:27, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We don't call the Delmarva Peninsula or the Peloponnese an island, either, even though the isthmuses connecting them to the mainland are cut by sea-level canals. -- Donald Albury 10:50, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

>>>>>Island: it is right: (article: Peloponnese): The Peloponnese covers an area of some 21,549 km² (8,320 square miles) ...technically it may be considered an island since the construction of the Corinth Canal in 1893 - like other peninsulas that have been separated from their mainland by man-made bodies of waters.

But is an island... 189.60.148.70 (talk) 01:01, 1 August 2008 (UTC) You can not enter in Miami Beach without a bridge. If this is not an island, what is this?[reply]

But the article on the Peloponnese starts off by saying, "The Peloponnese or Peloponesus is a large peninsula." I don't think that Miami Beach should be called an island in the lede, and I would note that the article has been around in WP for a few years without that. -- Donald Albury 13:38, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wilton Manors considers itself an island, and all they have is a canal dug around it. They have signs that say "Island City" - Marc Averette (talk) 02:43, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

LGBT[edit]

The current content on the LGBT community in Miami beach is completly arbitrary and does nothing more thant to stigmatize and scare away LGBT tourists. This sort of writing has no place in Wiki. It must be re-written at once!!!! Miami beach, as demonstrated by the opening up of a new LGBT community center is a world class LGBT vacation destination. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.219.97.226 (talk) 20:26, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Added NPOV tag; section is completely one-sided and the descriptions of the accusations against the city and the police are quite weaselly. I'm certain there is a way to describe the accusations of corruption/homophobia without pronouncing judgment on either the mayor or the police dept. --SchutteGod (talk) 17:40, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Facts are facts, 2009 events with the police department were nationally and internationally reported by major media outlets and discussed by many LGBT organizations. Hiding a fact about such a serious hazard for gay men in Miami Beach, just so the mayor and the city looks nice, is not in line with Wikipedia principals. This is not the city of Miami Beach website, where you can put promotional info. The section is balanced more now, but some previously added pro city statements still need to be cited. Also, this is about Miami Beach, not Miami-Dade, Miami, Florida, San Francisco etc. Do not cite organizations that are not in Miami Beach. Citing other Wiki pages as a source also is against the rules of Wikipedia. I removed the link about the gayest cities. Being the last on the list that doesn't even include NY is not a legitimate fact about Miami Beach, especially when the list is created by a paid staff of a magazine. It's someones opinion for pay and not a fact.67.168.74.199 (talk) 23:50, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: section on Jewish population[edit]

The name of one conservative synagogue has been added by name to a statement that there are many conservative synagogues in Miami Beach. I almost reverted that as promotionalism, but then I noticed there is just one liberal synagogue named. This can be approached in more than one way; name all of the synagogues (I think that might be excessive), name only those synagogues that have historical significance (citing reliable sources for that significance), or don't name any of them. -- Donald Albury 11:44, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nonsense in Middle American history[edit]

I have removed the whole Middle American history section as none of it was sourced, most of it was pure fantasy, and most of it had nothing to do with Miami Beach. I have removed this nonsense before. I am quite confident that no one will be able to find a reliable source for the fantasy parts, and I will regard any attempt to restore any of the material that is not supported by reliable sources as being not constructive for Wikipedia. -- Donald Albury 11:34, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Concur. Also had comments on Coconut Grove and areas well outside MB. -- Alexf(talk) 11:50, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

pumps[edit]

14,000 gallons per minute is quoted widely. The four initials doing 4,000 per minute as written in the article, is that all four or each? 1,000 gallons per minute wouldn't be a lot. Not any more than a mobile pump could probably do. B137 (talk) 07:30, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Timeline of Miami Beach, Florida[edit]

City's rank in Demographics section[edit]

The last paragraph in the Demographics section is a list of where the city ranks among US cities in the percentage of its residents who have come from various, primarily Latin American, countries. The rankings are based on a site that has not been updated since 2005. The site does not explicitly give the rankings, which apparently were found by counting the cities that appear above Miami Beach on the site's list for each country. I question the suitability of this site for this information. I also question the value of this information for inclusion in a Wikipedia article. Any thoughts? - Donald Albury 14:58, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • You're correct, it has no value. It was from a non-RS and was just random trivia. Whoever did it, spammed the source all over Miami-Dade articles. Niteshift36 (talk) 21:52, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Problems in Miami Beach[edit]

Police chief says Miami partying “couldn’t go on any longer”

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Pointing to over 1,000 arrests in one of the nation’s top party spots, Miami Beach officials warned Sunday that the unruly spring break crowd gath...

Officers in bullet proof vests dispersed pepper spray balls Saturday night into a defiant, but mostly nonviolent crowd, refusing to submit to the curfew that had only been enacted four hours earlier.
“We couldn't go on any longer,” Clements said during Sunday's meeting, defending the city's curfew. “I think this was the right decision.” By Friday night, police said the partying was out of control. ... Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said he has trouble sleeping at night, worried about the out-of-control parties. https://apnews.com/article/covid-19-pandemic-miami-us-news-coronavirus-pandemic-4c4ac71405e13f063e38dde30ef260d3#:~:text=%E2%80%9CWe%20couldn't%20go%20on,partying%20was%20out%20of%20control.&text=Miami%20Beach%20Mayor%20Dan%20Gelber,out%2Dof%2Dcontrol%20parties. Hardly of encyclopedic importance. Notice that the decades-long history of spring breaks in Ft. Lauderdale is summed up in four sentences. I do not see this incident being worth more than one sentence in this article, and we should wait until it is over to decide if it deserves even that. - Donald Albury 19:23, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

SPORT[edit]

Add sports teams that represent the city of Miami Beach Miamibeachlover (talk) 02:12, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know of any? The major league teams in the area have Miami or Florida in their names. - Donald Albury 13:51, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Racism and anti-Semitism[edit]

I just reverted a bunch of mostly unsourced comments alleging racism and anti-Semitism in the city's history. While there are valid points raised, the language was not NPOV. These topics need to be treated in an NPOV manner, and with citations to reliable sources that support any added content. The essay at Wikipedia:Tendentious editing#Righting great wrongs is pertinant. - Donald Albury 14:09, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Spring break incidents and crackdown[edit]

We should probably work spring break incidents and this year's crackdown in somewhere, either in Miami Beach, Florida or South Beach. NBC news article. Seems WP:DUE. Should be plenty of other sources if needed. –Novem Linguae (talk) 07:56, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
